Chapter 3

Author: Pigmy Bean
I did not stop. I only quickened my pace, but Jim caught up and grabbed me. "Cecilia, what exactly are you trying to pull?"

Jim was usually calm and steady, but this time, there was a rare flash of anger in his eyes.

I had no idea what he meant. I was about to ask when he continued, "I thought you actually realized you were wrong. I didn't expect you to say one thing to my face and do another behind my back.

"You know perfectly well that Harriet and I are completely innocent. In the end, you'll be the one I marry. So, what did you mean by bringing up the fact that she and I got married, then returning the wedding fund I gave you?

"Do you really have to let your jealousy ruin the relationship between my sister and me? Do you want everyone to think something inappropriate is going on between us and ruin Harriet's reputation?"

His accusations hit my heart like a hammer, and my eyes immediately began to sting.

I had thought he had chased after me to explain why he had not pushed Harriet away. Instead, he did not care about that at all. He was only worried about whether Harriet's reputation would be ruined.

I lifted the corners of my mouth in a bitter smile, mocking myself for still holding on to such foolish hopes. I should have been used to it by now, should I not?

Whenever Harriet was involved, Jim always cared about her first. It did not matter who else was standing beside her. He simply stopped seeing anyone else.

Just like that time when he rushed to rescue Harriet behind the university campus.

Harriet had somehow gotten into trouble with a group of local troublemakers and ended up trapped in an alley. When Jim and I arrived, her face was already swollen from being slapped.

Jim went completely crazy with rage. He charged into the crowd alone and pulled Harriet behind him, shielding her with his body.

The group was made up of students. They were too afraid to attack once they realized Jim knew how to fight. However, they did not want to back down either, so they turned on me instead.

I was shaking from head to toe and cried out to Jim for help. He acted as if he did not hear me. He was too busy checking Harriet from head to toe, making sure she was not seriously hurt.

It was as if he had completely forgotten I existed. Worried that Harriet might be injured, he hurried her straight to the hospital.

If I had not called the police before we arrived, I had no idea what would have happened to me.

That night, Jim secretly cried for hours out of guilt and swore that he would never leave me alone again.

However, when Zephyr was hit by a flood, he still drove an hour to pick up Harriet, even though I was only a mile away from him. Harriet was in no danger at all. Later, when Zephyr was on lockdown because of an influenza outbreak and Harriet was stranded on campus, he gave her every medicine and face mask we had at home.

I was left with nothing to treat even an ordinary high fever. I experienced lasting damage to my lungs from it.

There had been too many moments like that. I had lost count, and I did not want to count anymore. I certainly did not want to keep waiting for the day Jim might finally remember that I existed.

I yanked my hand free from his grip. I had so many grievances, so many questions I wanted to throw at him, but suddenly, I felt too exhausted to say any of them.

I closed my eyes for a moment, sighed, and finally said, "Fine, Jim. Whatever you say."

Jim felt as if he had punched a pillow. His throat tightened, leaving him at a loss for words, and when his gaze finally dropped to my face, he seemed to snap out of it the moment he saw how red and swollen my eyes were. A flash of regret crossed his face.

"Cecilia, I didn't mean to blame you…" He hesitated for a long moment before carefully choosing his next words.

"And about what happened with Harriet just now... Don't take it to heart. She's still just a kid. She doesn't realize she's too old to act like that anymore. When we get home, I'll talk to her. Just don't hold it against her. You'll only make yourself miserable."

Listening to Jim make excuses for Harriet with the same practiced ease as always, I did not feel angry or hurt like I used to. I only wanted to laugh. He had said those exact words countless times over the past eight years.

When Harriet turned 18, she wanted to take couple photos with him. I objected, but Jim did not care at all. He simply told me not to hold it against a kid.

Later, when the three of us lived together, Harriet secretly wore my pajamas and slept in our bedroom with one of Jim's shirts clutched in her arms. I was disgusted and told Harriet to move out.

Jim said I was making a big deal out of nothing. Harriet only missed her big brother. Why was I making things difficult for a child?

Now, the two of them had openly gotten married and kissed each other, yet he was still telling me, the woman who was supposed to marry him, not to take it to heart.

I could not help laughing.

Maybe even when they had grandchildren running around, Jim would still be saying the same thing. "Harriet is still young. Don't hold it against her."

That was how Jim saw her. A 22-year-old college graduate was still just a child in his eyes.

Fine.

This time, I really was not going to hold it against her.

I swallowed hard. My throat felt painfully dry, and when I spoke, my voice came out rough. "Jim, forget about the wedding."

My eyes burned with tears. Without hesitating for even a second, I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching out to me, and pulled myself to my feet. Then I ran.The wolves that had moved away were drawn back by the sound of our footsteps. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.I felt the hand gripping mine tighten, and his pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just run with me."I nodded.Even though I was already exhausted and could barely run anymore, I forced my heavy legs to keep moving. I did not dare slow down, let alone stop.Just as I struggled to keep going, my foot caught on a rock, and I stumbled and fell. Before I could get back up, a wolf lunged straight at me. Wilson quickly dragged me forward, but another wolf attacked him from the side. He had no time to worry about me and could only keep shouting for me to climb the tree. However, more and more pairs of glowing green eyes surrounded me. I could not find a single chance to climb.I carefully ba

Jim felt like a cold wind had blown straight through his chest after those merciless words. He pressed his lips together, tears clinging to his lashes."Cecilia, I'm sorry. I was wrong before. I never understood where the line was between a brother and his sister, but I understand now. Can you forgive me one more time? I already had the house renovated. Look, I even got the breed of cat you used to love."He hurriedly pulled out his phone and held it in front of me, swiping through photo after photo.I did not even look up. I simply slapped his hand away."I don't want to see it. I'm not interested, and I don't like cats anymore."His phone hit the ground. For a moment, Jim looked so heartbroken that he could barely breathe. Still, he forced a smile, crouched down, and picked it up."Okay. Then when you go back, we can—"I cut him off impatiently, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. Even if I were, I would never get back together with you. So, stop foll

Cecilia's POV:"Ms. Carter, take a break. I don't think we're going to see the pride today. Once you have rested, we should head back to camp."I waved him off. My eyes never left the monitors.I had been in Frisia for more than a year, and filming the documentary had been far harder than anyone expected. We barely had enough usable footage to show for it, and one of our crew members had even come close to being mauled.A lot of people had quit because of it. They packed their things and went straight home. Fewer than twenty people remained now, which was pitifully small for a professional production team.Still, we had not given up. We were holding on and doing everything we could to finish what we had started. Then a cup of warm water appeared beside me. The familiar scent made the tips of my ears turn red."Have some water. I'll keep watch for you."I quietly said okay and let him take my place. I had barely gotten to my feet when someone caught the edge of my shirt."Ms. C

The doctor did not seem concerned."Don't worry. These are just treatment methods. They won't cause any harm. Our hospital always puts the patient's wishes first."Hearing that, Jim finally relaxed.Just like he used to, he reached out and gently rubbed Harriet's head."Be good, Harriet. Cooperate with the treatment. Once you're better, I'll come get you. I'm still paying the rent on your current place. I'm just going to move into our wedding home with Cecilia. You don't mind, right?"In the past, Harriet truly would have objected. However, now, what right did she have to refuse? She nodded repeatedly."Jim, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't bother you and Cecilia. Just don't leave me here, okay? I'm Harriet. Please don't leave me behind."The same words she had said countless times before reached Jim's ears. However, this time, they could no longer touch his heart. He gently pushed her away. "I'm not leaving you."His expression was still as gentle as ever. Yet to Harrie

Harriet rose to her toes and lunged for a kiss, almost like she had lost her mind. Jim stepped back, but she kept moving forward.Jim had never known Harriet could be so strong. In his eyes, she had always been gentle and fragile. Her breath brushed against his neck. Finally, he snapped back to reality and shoved her away."Enough, Harriet! I'm your brother!"Jim practically shouted the words, his voice filled with disbelief and desperation. However, Harriet seemed unable to hear him at all. She wiped away her tears again and again, yet the smile at the corner of her lips never faded."Jim, don't you think you sound ridiculous saying that yourself? We're not even related by blood. What gives you the right to keep calling yourself my brother? Do you really see me as nothing more than your little sister?"And what are you pretending for now? You've liked me for a long time, haven't you? If you never had those feelings for me, then why did you let me get close to you again and again

For a moment, all Jim could hear was a high-pitched ringing in his ears.A terrible thought suddenly surfaced in his mind. He did not have time to say another word to the wedding company. He hung up immediately and called Cecilia.Only one day had passed. Usually, after the phone rang a few times, he would hear the cold automated message telling him that no one was available to answer. This time, however, the phone did not ring at all. Instead, a recorded voice came through immediately."The number you have dialed is no longer in service..."Jim's chest tightened as a wave of unease washed over him. His eyes stared blankly ahead, slowly losing focus. He called Cecilia's best friend next, but every call was rejected. Eventually, even her friend blocked his number. The messages he had sent Cecilia remained untouched in their chat history, with no reply and not even a sign that she had seen them.A terrible sense of panic began to rise inside Jim. For the first time, it felt as th
