Chapter 4

Author: Linden White
The old woman was frantic. She stayed by my side, wrapping me in a blanket she had found.

However, my breathing kept getting weaker. My arms and legs went completely numb. I could only lie there, stiff and still, waiting for death.

Meanwhile, the man who had destroyed me was showing off. He pulled out his phone and proudly displayed the photos and videos he had taken to the people around him.

"Look at that figure. Pretty hot, right?"

In the photos, my dress had been torn to shreds. My body was covered in bruises and ugly streaks of blood.

Since my face was not visible, they all assumed I was just some low-level escort.

Sean happened to pass by and stopped to take a look. He did not recognize the silver pendant I had worn since I was a child. Instead, he let out a low whistle.

"Not bad. A little too skinny though. Nothing special."

The crowd burst into even more disgusting laughter.

Something inside me broke for good.

I remembered back in sophomore year, a boy from the class next door had looked at me for a second too long. Sean had almost broken his arm over it.

However, he watched a video of me being humiliated and did not feel a thing.

At that moment, I finally understood. The brother I knew had already died the day Wendy came into the Lawson family.

A sharp pain stabbed through my chest. I coughed up a mouthful of blood, and my breathing turned into desperate, ragged gasps.

Suddenly, Sean's assistant came running in, flustered.

Wendy had fallen while skiing. She said she felt dizzy and nauseous, possibly a mild concussion, and needed to be taken down the mountain immediately.

The doctor's eyes lit up at once. He turned to me, his voice urgent.

"Ms. Lawson, this is our chance. They're heading down the mountain. If we follow them, we can get you to a hospital. Just hold on a little longer!"

I did not have the strength to respond. I could only let out a faint, helpless breath.

The doctor found a snowmobile used for transporting supplies.

At the same time, Sean was already at the helipad, waiting for the helicopter he had called for Wendy.

Unfortunately, just as the helicopter arrived, the doctor drove me to the entrance of the helipad.

It was the only way down the mountain.

Sean carried Wendy and boarded the helicopter first. His bodyguards blocked our path.

The doctor shouted desperately at Sean. "Move! Please move! There's a critically injured patient behind us. If we delay any longer, she's going to die!"

At first, Sean ignored him. However, the doctor's persistence began to irritate him. Sean slid open the cabin window, his voice sharp with annoyance.

"Wendy's health matters more than anything. No one is more important than her. As for the one behind you, if she dies, then that's her fate. Some lives just don't matter."

He snapped the window shut without another word.

The doctor trembled with anger, but he had no choice. He maneuvered around the bodyguards, squeezing through a narrow gap.

At last, we managed to pass beside the helicopter.

As we moved past it, one of Sean's friends happened to open the window for some air. The moment he saw my pale, lifeless face, he recoiled in shock and fell back into his seat.

He stammered to Sean, "Sean… T-the person on that snowmobile… It looked like Kelly!"

Sean frowned and shot him an impatient glance.

"What nonsense are you talking about? How could she be here? Besides, she's full of tricks. There's no way she'd let herself get into real danger."

Hearing that, his friend swallowed the rest of his words.

Due to Wendy's concussion, Sean stayed by her side in the hospital for three full days.

By the time he had almost forgotten about me entirely, he received a call from our parents. They said they were about to return home and wanted to throw a celebration banquet for my academic success.

Sean did a quick calculation. By his estimate, I had probably reflected enough in the suite and could be let out then.

Just as he was about to call his assistant, his phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number, but he still answered.

The voice on the other end was a police officer.

"Is this Mr. Sean Lawson? We found a female body on a mountain road outside the city. After identification, it has been confirmed to be your sister, Ms. Kelly Lawson."

After that, Sean completely lost his mind. He chased after my spirit, calling my name over and over."Kelly! Don't go! Please don't leave me!"People on the street stared at him like he was crazy, but he did not care. He ran after something that was not even there, all the way to what used to be the Lawson Group building. He rushed up to the rooftop. Then, he spread his arms, a strange sense of relief on his face."Kelly, I'm coming to be with you."With that, he jumped. From a hundred meters up, he fell straight down.I slowly closed my eyes. I felt myself growing lighter, more transparent, until I finally faded into nothing.…I did not know how much time passed. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a cradle.I had become a baby.A young man and woman stood nearby, looking at me with nothing but love in their eyes."Our baby's awake. Come here, let Mommy hold you."The woman gently picked me up. The man leaned closer and lightly tapped my nose."Our littl

Perhaps his obsession had grown too strong.I gathered every bit of strength I had left. For the first time, I appeared clearly in front of him, not as a memory, but as a soul.He was in my room, holding my photo. The moment I appeared, he looked up in disbelief."Kelly!"He called my name, his voice hoarse, stumbling toward me as if he could pull me back into the world. He reached out, trying to hold me tight. However, his hands passed straight through me, through nothing but cold air.He froze. The smile on his face slowly faded."Kelly, why… Why can't I touch you?"I hovered in the air, looking down at him without emotion."Sean, that's because I'm dead."He collapsed onto the floor, breaking down completely."I'm sorry, Kelly. It's all my fault. Hit me. Yell at me. Do anything you want. Just, please… Forgive me, okay? I'll give you my life. If you can come back, I'll die right now."I watched him beg, so small, so desperate, and felt nothing. His life meant nothing to m

His beard had grown out, messy and unkempt. There was nothing left of the confident, sharp man he used to be.Later, he drove out to the snow-covered mountain road on the outskirts of the city. That was where my body had been found. He parked by the roadside and walked into the snow, step by step, until the cold stiffened his body and turned his lips purple. Sean ran out of the police station. He sped all the way back to the villa, driving like he had lost his mind.My spirit followed close behind him.He stormed inside, grabbed the manager by the collar, his eyes bloodshot."The cleaner. The old woman who begged me to save someone. Where is she?"The manager was so scared his legs nearly gave out. He pointed shakily toward the staff quarters.Sean found the old woman. The moment she saw him, her eyes filled with tears. "Mr. Lawson, that girl… She…""She's my sister!"Sean grabbed her hands, his voice breaking as he questioned her again and again."What was she like back then? What did she say? Tell me. Please, just tell me!"The old woman sobbed uncontrollably. "That poor child… She said… 'Please help me'… I went to find you, but your assistant wouldn't allow it. He said you wanted Ms. Roberts to enjoy herself."Later, the doctor found her and called you. You said… You said she wouldn't die, and told her to stop bothering you…"

Sean was out shopping with Wendy, helping her pick out luxury items she would need for Halvard University. The moment he heard my name from the police officer, the smile on his face froze. However, just as quickly, his expression turned impatient."Where did she even find you people? Actors? What new trick is she trying this time to get my sympathy? Tell Kelly I'm tired of her games. She can stop bothering me now."He did not give the officer any chance to explain before hanging up.Wendy stood beside him, her voice soft and concerned."Sean… What if something really did happen?"Sean reached out and ruffled her hair, his tone full of certainty."Relax. She's full of schemes. There's no way she'd actually put herself in real danger. This is just another way to force me to give in and bring her back."I won't let her get what she wants. Let her suffer out there a little longer. Maybe then she'll learn not to pick on you again."My spirit hovered in the air, watching him calmly.
