I stared at the dirty woman, who looked like she had been through her own version of hell. The little boy in her arms was digging himself as far into her embrace as he could. I imagine they’d both reek of fear if I could stand to smell them over the grotesque stench of human filth.

“Who are you?” I hissed quietly. The woman shielded the boy from my view, pulled her lips back over her teeth, and growled at me.

“Why are you here?” I whisper-yelled. Still no response, just more growling. Can this chick even speak? Ah fuck it, I don’t have the time right now.

“I’ll be back” I said firmly before closing the door and putting the locks back in place. I put the chain around my neck and made my way back up the stairs. I pressed my ear to the door and listened. I could hear shouting. One male voice was yelling for someone to come back, while another male voice was yelling about backup. I guess things have progressed in the ten minutes I've been down here.
