Chapter 3

Auteur: Splitting Spring
When I woke up, I was lying in a private hospital room.

The door wasn't fully closed, and low voices drifted in from the hallway.

"Don Vieri, the signora took a bad hit this time. If she finds out about Ms. Mancini—"

It was Leone's private doctor, Ben Bruno.

He didn't get to finish before Leone's cold voice cut in. "Watch your mouth! Your job is to treat Anna. Stay out of everything else!

"Anna's been in the casino game for years. She's done every ruthless and dirty thing there is. Bliss isn't like her. She's clean, like a blank page. She wouldn't stand a chance against Anna."

He paused, his voice dropping even lower. "If Anna wakes up and starts acting up, bring Jason in and use him to threaten her. He's the only family she has. She won't look the other way."

My fingers clenched tight around the sheets. I bit my lip until it split, the taste of blood spreading across my tongue.

The night I helped Leone take Navarro's casinos, he'd looked me in the eye and said, "Anna, from now on, no one in Navarro will dare lay a finger on you."

The same vow he once made to me, he'd given to another woman.

He once protected me like I was priceless. But now, he saw me as a threat he needed to guard against.

When I heard footsteps approaching, I closed my eyes and pretended I had just woken up.

"You're awake? We found out who did it. It was that small-time punk who cheated in the casino last time. We broke his hand, remember?" Leone said.

Then, he tossed a document onto the bed in front of me.

"Sign this settlement, and the man who kidnapped you will hand over the East Pier."

The East Pier was the only clean piece of land left in the city. It sat by the sea, with no casinos and hardly any dirty business.

I remembered Leone telling Bliss, "I'll find somewhere quiet and build a resort for you..."

So, all the injuries on my body were just bargaining chips for him to build a gilded cage for his new lover.

I asked hoarsely, "Leone, when did you make this deal?"

Was it the moment he saw me being dragged away? Or long before that, when he decided to pave the way for Bliss with my blood?

Leone's brows pulled together. He clearly didn't like the question.

I tugged at the corner of my lips and let it go.

Whatever the answer was, it didn't matter anymore.

Maybe to soothe me, Leone stayed by my side for the next two days, handling family business from my room.

But his phone never left his hand. Even while we ate, he'd snap photos and send them to Bliss, wearing a soft smile I had never seen.

I watched his profile and suddenly thought of seven years ago.

The first time I met him wasn't in a casino. It had been in a dark alley.

He'd been caught cheating at cards. Several men with knives circled him, and he was one swing away from losing an arm.

I had just won a pile of cash, so I saved him on a whim. Later, I dragged him back to my apartment.

Not long after, my father, back home, owed money to loan sharks and was pushed into his grave by a drug dealer.

They'd grabbed me to pay off the debt. A cold needle had been pressed against my vein.

At the last second, Leone showed up with his men and rescued me.

Leone stayed by my bed day and night, taking care of me and never letting his guard down.

After that, I helped him build up a small casino. Then, I helped him take down casino after casino, wiping out one rival after another.

I knew my hands were already stained with blood that would never come clean. But even if the whole world thought I was dirty, Leone had no right to.

I yanked my hand out of Leone's grip with every last bit of strength I had."Leone, our home was destroyed a long time ago! We can't go back to what we were!"His face was deathly pale, but he still stubbornly reached toward me. "Anna, come back home with me. Everything will go back to how it was before..."I looked him straight in the eye. "Leone, if I'd confronted Bliss back then, would you have killed Jason right before my eyes, and then killed me as well?"Leone's eyes widened in shock. His lips moved, and he forced out, "I'd never do something like that!"He was just as fake as ever. He lied to me, and he lied to Bliss too.Jason rushed to my side and raised his gun at Leone. "Anna, let me put a bullet in him!"I lifted my hand, took the gun from Jason, and turned it in my grip. I raised the barrel and aimed at Leone's right hand.I pulled the trigger without a second thought.Leone's whole body jolted. He stared in disbelief at his mangled hand, then lifted his head to l

Bliss went white with fear and spun around to run, but Leone caught up with her in a few strides and clamped a hand around her wrist. She struggled with everything she had, tears spilling nonstop.Leone held her tighter, his voice rough as he tried to reassure her. "Don't be afraid. I'm just teaching them a lesson so they don't ever dare lay a hand on you again.""It's not that! It's not like that at all!" Bliss looked up at him through a blur of tears."That day, Anna was the one who protected me. She was hurt so badly, but she still kept me behind her! She's such a good person. How could I ever do something like this to her?"Something stirred sharply in Leone's eyes. So, Bliss already knew everything.Leone tried to explain. "That's all in the past. Now, I just—"Bliss shook her head and tore herself out of his arms. "Anna never hurt me. She saved my life. She's such a good woman. Why didn't you cherish her?"She finally screamed out everything she'd been holding in. Her wh

"Search every inch of this city! Bring Anna back to me!" Leone growled into the phone. "Even if she's dead, I want to see the body!""Don Vieri, we've searched everywhere in Navarro. We've checked the hospitals, the docks, and even the underground clinics, but we still can't find any sign of Ms. Russo," Antonio said, his voice tight."Then, go find Jason!" Leone slammed his hand down on the desk. "He got hurt last time, didn't he? He has to be laid up in some hospital. Grab him! I don't believe Anna can stay hidden if he's in our hands!"Leone hung up, his chest heaving, the vein in his forehead standing out."Leone?" Bliss stood in the doorway of the study, looking nervous. "Were you... Looking for someone?"Leone turned around, the ferocity in his eyes not yet gone. Bliss flinched and stumbled back half a step.He drew in a slow breath. "It's nothing. You don't need to worry about casino business."Bliss walked in carefully. "I made some hot chocolate for you. Have some. It mi

Antonio's voice came through the line tight and panicked. "Don Vieri, Ms. Russo is gone! We've checked every hospital in Navarro! She's not there anywhere!"And it looks like Ms. Russo already knew about the divorce. She went to the city hall to pull the records."Leone's phone slipped from his fingers and hit the floor.Bliss woke up coughing from the cigarette smoke. She padded out to the living room and saw the ashtray overflowing with butts. "Did something happen at the casino?" she asked softly.Leone came back to himself, but he didn't crush out the cigarette between his fingers the way he usually did when Bliss was around."It's nothing," he said hoarsely. "Just a small thing at work. It's settled."He didn't notice his bloodshot eyes or how drained he looked.Antonio had just told him that Anna had gone to a hospital and ended her pregnancy. That day had been the same day he took Bliss to the casino and announced the new woman in charge. He'd walked another woman into

Leone stayed in the VIP ward until Bliss finally woke up."Leone, I was so scared I'd lose you..." Her voice was thin and trembling, still caught in the fear of almost not making it out alive.Leone pulled her into his arms, his thumb brushing the sweat from her temple. "It was my fault, tesoro. I didn't protect you. I let you get scared."Bliss shook her head, then suddenly stopped, as though she had just remembered something. "What about the woman who was taken with me? Is she okay?"Leone's eyes cooled, and he didn't answer her question. "Bliss, you're too kind. From now on, I'm never letting you out of my sight again!"He kept patting her back in a soothing rhythm until she finally drifted into an uneasy sleep. Then, he turned to his consigliere, Antonio Conti, and gave the order. "Clean out the villa from top to bottom. Anything that doesn't belong gets tossed. Bliss will move in as soon as she's discharged."Antonio nodded and handed him a document. "Don Vieri, this is the

Bliss went rigid with fear, her face turning paper white as she cried, "No! Please, I'm begging you! Don't touch my baby!"The men beside her let out filthy laughs and reached their hands toward her.Right at that moment, I snapped the rope and surged to my feet, driving my elbow hard into the scar-faced man's jaw.I snatched the knife from him and cut the rope binding Bliss. Then, I pushed her behind me, using my body to cover hers."Damn it! Kill that bitch!" The scar-faced man shouted, clutching his chin in fury.Several men circled us at once, each gripping an iron rod.I knew how to fight a bit, but my injuries had barely healed. Up against a pack of desperate thugs, I started losing ground fast. The rods slammed into me, the pain so sharp it nearly knocked me to my knees. All I could do was take the blows with my body and keep Bliss pinned behind me in the corner where they couldn't get to her.The scar-faced man clearly ran out of patience.
