Chapter 4

Auteur: Splitting Spring
After I was discharged, Leone used the family business as an excuse and never showed up again.

I was leaving the next day, so while he wasn't around, I went back up to the penthouse suite above the Navarro casino.

I took my passport and a few important documents out of the safe.

When I stepped out of the elevator, my legs suddenly went weak, and I pitched forward.

I didn't hit the floor because a pair of slender hands caught me in time.

"Are you okay?" a soft, timid voice asked, her face full of concern.

I looked up and met Bliss's clear eyes.

She wore the casino dealer's uniform, but she still looked completely out of place in it.

She didn't recognize me and probably thought I was just some regular guest who had lost everything and was wandering around in a daze.

"I'm fine. Thanks," I said as I steadied myself, ready to get out of there.

Instead of letting go, she kept hold of my arm, tugging me toward the staff break room. "You look really pale. Come sit here and rest for a while, okay?"

For some reason, I didn't refuse her.

She poured me a cup of warm water and took a packet of bread out of her own locker.

"Here, eat something," she said. "Don't be too upset about losing money. Go home early. I'm sure your family's waiting for you."

When I didn't answer, she hesitated and then pulled a few bills from her uniform pocket and pushed them into my hand.

"You can use this for a cab, but I really can't help with plane tickets," she said.

My throat tightened, like something was stuck there.

I wanted so badly to tell her to stay away from Leone. He was heartless. Every bit of gentleness he showed was just poison hidden under a sugar coating.

But when the words reached my lips, I swallowed them back down.

If she found out who I was, she'd definitely confront Leone.

When that happened, I'd be the one they blamed for it.

I only had one day left. I couldn't gamble with my life and Jason's.

I took the bills from Bliss, thanked her, and hurried out through the back door.

The moment I stepped outside, something cold and solid jammed hard against my temple.

It was a gun!

I instinctively tried to glance back.

Bliss was already lying unconscious on the hallway floor.

Before I could move, the gun butt crashed into my neck, knocking me out cold.

When I came to, Bliss and I were tied up in an abandoned warehouse.

Bliss was trembling as she cried softly. "Who are you? Why did you grab us?"

A man with a knife scar slashed across his face slapped her hard.

"Because you're Leone's woman!" he shouted. "He took over the East Pier and cut off my business, capisce?"

They were accomplices of the cheats from Westside who kidnapped me last time.

Leone had just traded for that piece of territory using the settlement I signed.

Luckily, they didn't recognize me. Bliss, on the other hand, had been sticking close to Leone lately, which made her an easy target.

I moved my wrists in small, careful motions, cutting the rope with the tiny blade I'd hidden under my fingernail.

After so many years living on the edge, I always made sure to have a way out.

The scar-faced man thought I was just some regular gambler and spat at me. "You're unfortunate to have been caught with her. Call your family. 500 grand, and we'll let you go."

Bliss sobbed miserably as she said, "I'm sorry. I dragged you into this. But don't be scared. My fiancé is powerful. He'll definitely come to save us!"

At the mention of Leone, her eyes lit up with absolute trust.

I kept my mouth shut and cut the rope faster.

It seemed like the scar-faced man's call didn't go through. He kicked a metal drum over in frustration.

"Damn it! Leone's not picking up? Fine! Let's send him a present to clear his head!"

He picked up the knife from the floor, his gaze roaming over Bliss with filthy intent.

"I saw you and Leone at the hospital. You're carrying his child, right? Perfetto! We'll carve that bastard out and let Leone have a good look!"

My heart sank. So, Bliss was carrying Leone's baby.

I yanked my hand out of Leone's grip with every last bit of strength I had."Leone, our home was destroyed a long time ago! We can't go back to what we were!"His face was deathly pale, but he still stubbornly reached toward me. "Anna, come back home with me. Everything will go back to how it was before..."I looked him straight in the eye. "Leone, if I'd confronted Bliss back then, would you have killed Jason right before my eyes, and then killed me as well?"Leone's eyes widened in shock. His lips moved, and he forced out, "I'd never do something like that!"He was just as fake as ever. He lied to me, and he lied to Bliss too.Jason rushed to my side and raised his gun at Leone. "Anna, let me put a bullet in him!"I lifted my hand, took the gun from Jason, and turned it in my grip. I raised the barrel and aimed at Leone's right hand.I pulled the trigger without a second thought.Leone's whole body jolted. He stared in disbelief at his mangled hand, then lifted his head to l

"Don't be afraid. I'm just teaching them a lesson so they don't ever dare lay a hand on you again.""It's not that! It's not like that at all!" Bliss looked up at him through a blur of tears."That day, Anna was the one who protected me. She was hurt so badly, but she still kept me behind her! She's such a good person. How could I ever do something like this to her?"Something stirred sharply in Leone's eyes. So, Bliss already knew everything.Leone tried to explain. "That's all in the past. Now, I just—"Bliss shook her head and tore herself out of his arms. "Anna never hurt me. She saved my life. She's such a good woman. Why didn't you cherish her?"She finally screamed out everything she'd been holding in. Her wh

"Search every inch of this city! Bring Anna back to me!" Leone growled into the phone. "Even if she's dead, I want to see the body!""Don Vieri, we've searched everywhere in Navarro. We've checked the hospitals, the docks, and even the underground clinics, but we still can't find any sign of Ms. Russo," Antonio said, his voice tight."Then, go find Jason!" Leone slammed his hand down on the desk. "He got hurt last time, didn't he? He has to be laid up in some hospital. Grab him! I don't believe Anna can stay hidden if he's in our hands!"Leone hung up, his chest heaving, the vein in his forehead standing out."Leone?" Bliss stood in the doorway of the study, looking nervous. "Were you... Looking for someone?"Leone turned around, the ferocity in his eyes not yet gone. Bliss flinched and stumbled back half a step.He drew in a slow breath. "It's nothing. You don't need to worry about casino business."Bliss walked in carefully. "I made some hot chocolate for you. Have some. It mi

Antonio's voice came through the line tight and panicked. "Don Vieri, Ms. Russo is gone! We've checked every hospital in Navarro! She's not there anywhere!"And it looks like Ms. Russo already knew about the divorce. She went to the city hall to pull the records."Leone's phone slipped from his fingers and hit the floor.Bliss woke up coughing from the cigarette smoke. She padded out to the living room and saw the ashtray overflowing with butts. "Did something happen at the casino?" she asked softly.Leone came back to himself, but he didn't crush out the cigarette between his fingers the way he usually did when Bliss was around."It's nothing," he said hoarsely. "Just a small thing at work. It's settled."He didn't notice his bloodshot eyes or how drained he looked.Antonio had just told him that Anna had gone to a hospital and ended her pregnancy. That day had been the same day he took Bliss to the casino and announced the new woman in charge. He'd walked another woman into

Leone stayed in the VIP ward until Bliss finally woke up."Leone, I was so scared I'd lose you..." Her voice was thin and trembling, still caught in the fear of almost not making it out alive.Leone pulled her into his arms, his thumb brushing the sweat from her temple. "It was my fault, tesoro. I didn't protect you. I let you get scared."Bliss shook her head, then suddenly stopped, as though she had just remembered something. "What about the woman who was taken with me? Is she okay?"Leone's eyes cooled, and he didn't answer her question. "Bliss, you're too kind. From now on, I'm never letting you out of my sight again!"He kept patting her back in a soothing rhythm until she finally drifted into an uneasy sleep. Then, he turned to his consigliere, Antonio Conti, and gave the order. "Clean out the villa from top to bottom. Anything that doesn't belong gets tossed. Bliss will move in as soon as she's discharged."Antonio nodded and handed him a document. "Don Vieri, this is the
