Chapter 1

Author: Thorny
At this moment, my hand was already stretched out.

Just a few more inches, and I would have helped the old lady up.

Looking at her frail figure lying helplessly on the ground, it suddenly hit me that I had been reborn.

In my last life, it was because I helped this same old lady that my entire life fell apart.

The painful memories rushed back like a tidal wave.

I was the only son in my family, pampered and loved. My parents even had a car and a house ready for me before I graduated from college.

My wife, Cindy Ford, and I were sweethearts from our campus days all the way to the wedding altar. Our bond only deepened when our daughter, Tessa Hayes, was born.

Cindy's parents were retired teachers. They were well-off and always knew their boundaries. They never meddled in my relationship with Cindy.

As for my parents, they adored me.

But everything changed the moment I helped that old lady.

At first, I thought they were just worried that the old lady might try to extort me. But in reality, after thanking me, she disappeared without a trace. To this day, I didn't even know her name or where she lived.

No matter how much I tried to explain, no one believed me. Everyone looked at me with hatred, even Tessa.

I died without knowing the reason.

At this thought, my heart raced with anxiety.

Since helping the old lady would bring me trouble, if I didn't help her this time, nothing bad would happen, right?

So, without hesitation, I withdrew my hand and didn't even dare glance at the old lady on the ground.

I quickly turned and walked away.

"Honey."

The familiar voice made my heart skip a beat.

At the service station's mart, I saw that Cindy already had water and snacks and was waving at me. Tessa, holding some treats, called me "Dad", her smile wide.

My heart, which had been in my throat, finally relaxed.

In my last life, Cindy would've screamed at me and taken Tessa with her, leaving me behind. She certainly wouldn't have smiled like this.

It seemed like I made the right choice this time.

"Honey, do you need anything else?" Cindy asked.

"No, let's just head back."

I picked Tessa up, holding her close, eager to leave this gloomy place behind.

Before we left, something made me glance back at the spot where the old lady had been, but she was already gone.

I figured one of the service station staff had helped her up.

Regardless, it was over now. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.

We got into the car, and Cindy continued driving down the highway.

The mood inside the car was warm and pleasant. I played with Tessa in the back seat while Cindy focused on the road. The car stereo was playing songs Tessa liked.

Just as I was feeling relieved that I'd changed my tragic fate from my last life, Cindy's phone rang.

The harsh ringtone shattered the peaceful vibe.

Cindy answered the call.

I couldn't tell what was said, but after a quick glance in my direction, her expression changed.

"Darling, what's wrong?"

I suddenly had a bad feeling in my gut.

Cindy, who usually answered every question I asked, ignored me this time. She handed the phone to Tessa coldly.

Sitting on my lap, Tessa took the phone with a confused look. Suddenly, she stopped playing with her toys and roughly pushed me away.

"I don't want you as my dad!"

Those were exactly the same words she had said in my last life!

It felt like I'd been struck by lightning, and I nearly passed out.

Meanwhile, Cindy had already pulled over, opened the back door, and roughly yanked me out of the car.

"I must have been blind to marry you! Get out! Don't dirty my car!" Cindy spat out angrily before getting back in the car.

The nightmare from my last life was repeating itself!

Why?

Why was this happening?

I hadn't helped the old lady this time, so why were Cindy and Tessa treating me the same way as before?

Tiana's expression was solemn as she continued, "Now, please allow me to clarify the truth for everyone. Mr. Hayes is innocent! Not only is he blameless, but he is a kind-hearted and courageous citizen!"At the service station, I stumbled and fell due to a sudden dizziness brought on by my age and frailty. It was Mr. Hayes who, despite the risk of being misunderstood, kindly stepped forward to help me."And it was at that moment that criminals, instructed by foreign forces, took advantage of this brief opportunity and visual angle to secretly insert a surveillance device into my coat pocket!"Then, they used hacking technology to intercept and maliciously splice the surveillance footage, framing Mr. Hayes for their heinous crimes of stealing national secrets. These criminals cleverly used Mr. Hayes' innocent presence at the scene to shift blame onto him!"She took a deep breath before continuing, "Fortunately, our national security agencies were sharp-eyed. They have successfully i

As soon as I finished speaking, the room erupted with boos and skepticism. The live stream chat exploded with comments again."Is he kidding? The evidence is undeniable, and he still wants to argue?""Let's see what other tricks he pulls!""Still acting tough even on his deathbed!""Just get to the point! I'd like to see who he's going to drag down with him!"At that moment, the door slowly creaked open, and two serious-looking officials in formal attire entered, pushing an old woman in a wheelchair. The woman was dressed in a simple suit. Her face was gaunt, but her eyes were sharp and wise.Everyone froze. A wave of gasps and astonished murmurs swept across the room. Some of the more well-informed reporters gasped out loud, "Isn't that… Dr. Tiana Hewitt? She's one of the founders of our country's high-energy physics field! My God! Why is Dr. Hewitt here in person?"In an instant, it was as if everyone had been pumped full of energy. The live stream chat went absolutely wild.

This time, I didn't hide my face. I walked boldly out onto the street. As expected, the crowd erupted into chaos. People passing by pointed at me, and some even started livestreaming."Damn, the most disgusting bastard ever is out here!""I wish he'd just disappear!"Soon, a swarm of reporters arrived, and the crowd surrounded me, throwing insults my way.But no one dared get too close because I had applied for a personal safety protection order.Despite the security guards' disdainful looks, they still did their job and kept people at bay."Mr. Hayes, what exactly are you trying to do?" they asked. "Do you know that what you're doing could easily stir up public outrage?"Of course I knew. I could even understand why they were shouting at me. If I were in their shoes, I would be cursing even worse.I stood calmly in the middle of the crowd. Facing the cameras and microphones of the reporters, I said loudly, "I know what I did wrong. I admit my guilt, and I'm willing to turn my

It felt like something inside my mind shattered completely. My last flicker of hope, the final path I had convinced myself was possible, was ruthlessly shut down."There has to be some mistake, Alisha! Please, check again! Or at least explain to me what's going on! What the hell did I do wrong?"I grabbed her arm in desperation. But Alisha jerked her arm away in disgust."Figure it out yourself," she said coldly. With that, she walked out. With the wrath of someone who had suffered a great deception, Cindy lost all control and charged at me."Raymond, I finally see you for what you really are!"She pointed at my face. "You really thought of stooping so low as to fake a mental illness? Are you hoping that, even if it's proven you're not sick, you can at least gain some sympathy? Listen, all you're doing is making me even more sick to my stomach!""Exactly!"Phoebe joined in angrily. "Our family must have been cursed to have let a jinx like you through the door! You did those w

I gritted my teeth and forced myself up from the ground. My voice was hoarse as I shouted, "Mom, Dad, stop! I have something to say!"While they were stunned, I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed Cindy's number. As expected, it still didn't go through.I immediately dialed Phoebe's number instead. After a long wait, it was finally picked up, accompanied by a noisy background."Mom," I quickly called out before she could say anything."Don't hang up yet. Bring everyone to my parents' house right now. I know how to prove my innocence! I know where the problem is!"Phoebe scoffed on the other end of the line. But maybe it was the certainty in my voice that made her hesitate for a moment. She replied with a tone full of contempt, "You'd better not be trying any tricks."And then, she hung up.I didn't waste time. I immediately dialed another number. There was a few seconds of silence before a cold voice responded, "I'll be there in half an hour."Although Mom and Dad still g

"We've dug into the old lady. She's just a regular old lady. You can rest easy. There's nothing suspicious about her."I hung up the phone in disbelief.Since things were at a standstill once again, I decided to go home.
