Tessa's POV

The patio smelled like salt and citronella.

Diana had strung market lights between the posts even though the sun was still up. Someone had already opened two bottles of white wine and set them in a metal tub of ice near the railing. Liam stood at the grill with a pair of tongs, arguing good-naturedly with one of his college friends about charcoal versus gas. The rest of the wedding party was scattered across the low couches and the wide steps that led down toward the bluff.

The dig landed exactly where he meant it to. I stared at him, weighing how much trouble it would cause if I told the captain of the city’s beloved hockey team to go fuck himself in his own kitchen. Rhys waited, eyebrows slightly raised, the picture of patient entitlement. I walked past him without answering and headed for the mudroom that led to the garage. He followed. Of course he followed. The garage smelled like cold concrete and the wax they used on the black cars lined up in a neat row. Boxes of gala decorations were stacked near the far wall. Rhys leaned against the doorframe and watched me start shifting them. “You know what your problem is, Bennett?” “I’m sure you’re dying to tell me.” “You act like I personally invented money just to make your life harder.” I set a box down harder than necessary. “No. I act like you’ve never once noticed the people who make your life easier.” “I notice.” “Bullshit.” He pushed off the doorframe and crossed the concrete until he stood

Sloane's POVThe first thing I heard when I walked through the service entrance was Rhys laughter. It carried down the back hallway the way it always did—loud enough to announce that the golden boy was home, careless enough to remind everyone else they were just scenery. I tightened my grip on the grocery bags and kept walking. The Langford kitchen smelled like lemon cleaner and the expensive candles Mrs. Langford liked to burn when she was expecting company. My mother had already been here for hours. I could tell by the way the counters shone.Rhys stood at the island in a black team hoodie and sweatpants, scrolling through his phone while my mother plated fruit like she was still invisible. He didn’t look up when I set the bags down harder than necessary.“You’re late,” he said.“Traffic.”“There’s always traffic when it’s your lazy ass.”My mother shot me a warning look over his shoulder but I ignored it and started unloading the bags. Apples. Spinach. The sparkling water Mrs. Lan

Vesper’s fingers glided through the wetness he had left between my thighs, and I opened widened my legs without hesitation. There was no resistance left in my body. The bond under my skin pulsed in warm, steady agreement as he stroked me, two fingers sliding easily inside, curling against the sensitive front wall that still ached from how thoroughly he had taken me. I made a soft, broken sound and pressed into his hand. He watched my face the entire time, pale eyes reflecting the moonlight and the last of my former self burning away.“You will not sleep in your own bed tonight,” he said quietly.“I know.”“You will not wake to your mother’s voice or the ordinary light through ordinary curtains.”“I know.”His thumb found my clit and rubbed slow, exact circles. Residual pleasure sparked through nerves that were already oversensitive. I shivered and gripped his wrist, not to stop him, but to keep him exactly where he was.“The magic is still settling,” he continued, voice low. “It will

The first inch of him stretched me open, and the magic answered like a struck match.Heat raced up my spine in a bright, electric rush that forced a broken cry from my throat. Vesper held still, only the head of his cock inside me, giving my body a moment to adjust while the bond under my skin flared wide and hungry. I could feel it spreading like warm ink flooding every vein, rewriting the spaces between my ribs, settling low in my belly like a second heartbeat that matched his.“Breathe,” he murmured against my mouth.I tried but the attempt came out as a shaky exhale. My fingers dug into the hard muscle of his shoulders. The moss was cool beneath my bare back, but I registered it only distantly. Everything that mattered was the thick, hot pressure of him poised at my entrance and the magic already beginning to lock.Vesper pushed deeper.Another inch. Then another. The stretch burned in the best way, a slow, relentless claiming that forced soft, helpless sounds out of me with ever

Vesper kissed me like he had been waiting years for the exact shape of my surrender. There was no more patience in it, only hunger held under tight control. His hand in my hair tightened, angling my head so he could take the kiss deeper. The taste of him flooded me—sweetness and smoke and something darker that made my toes curl inside my boots. I made a soft, broken sound against his lips and felt him answer it with a low growl that vibrated through my chest. The fallen oak pressed hard against my back and the bark caught at the fabric of my jacket. Vesper’s thigh slid higher between mine, solid and deliberate, and the pressure against my center dragged another helpless noise from my throat. He swallowed it and pressed closer, until there was no space left between our bodies that did not belong to him.The bond under my skin pulsed in time with my heartbeat, no longer a suggestion but a living heat that spread with every stroke of his tongue. It felt like warm ink moving through my v

My boots stayed rooted in the soft earth of the clearing while every warning I had ever been given screamed at me to turn and run. Vesper remained exactly where he was, patient, as if he had already measured the exact distance between my fear and my curiosity and found the latter heavier. The warmth from his earlier touch still lingered under the skin of my arm. It had not faded the way ordinary heat should have. It sat there like a slow-burning coal, spreading in thin threads up toward my shoulder and down into my wrist.“You said you would not stop me,” I said.“I will not.” His pale eyes caught the moonlight and held it. “But I will not make the path easier either.”I took one step backward. The root that had nearly tripped me earlier caught at my heel again. This time I stayed upright without his help. The small victory felt thin.“What happens if I stay?”A quiet breath left him. Almost a laugh, but softer.“You already know. Your blood remembers even if your mind pretends otherw
