Chapter 3

Author: Mohini
The next time I opened my eyes, I found my head wrapped up in a thick layer of bandages.

The nurse tactfully told me that if I had been sent to the clinic a moment later, I would have died.

I touched the wound, and it hurt so much that I could not breathe.

Belle had nearly killed me.

Before I could wipe away my tears, my mother’s neighbor ran over in panic. “Zach, I know that the house the research center allocated to Ms. York has been given to Nina, but Ms. York took it back! You need to check on her! Nina just suffered from a heart attack!”

I felt my mind going blank.

Without even caring about the wound on my head, I stumbled my way to the house.

Belle was ordering movers to throw my mother’s things out, and my mother was so furious that she fainted and collapsed on the floor.

“What are you doing?!” I ran over and held my mother while glaring at Belle.

There was no regret in her eyes, just great disgust. “Your mother started spreading rumors that my baby is Harry’s and is ruining my reputation!”

I shot back mockingly, “Isn’t that the truth?”

“You little—” But she was rendered speechless by my words. “Adriana is a martyr, and Harry is her widower. We need to prioritize giving the house to Harry. As for Nina, she can move back into her old home.”

My mother seemed to have heard those cruel words and twitched in my arms.

When we first got married, Belle had promised my mother that she would treat her right, just like I did. She had promised my mother that she would help her move out of her leaking shack and give her the house allocated to her.

To think that she would break her oath so soon.

I endured the great pain in my head and stumbled over to her. “If anything happens to my mother, we’re getting divorced!”

My words clearly made her breathing still. She cast a glance at my pathetic state, then at my mother. Then, she opened her mouth but did not manage to say anything.

At that moment, Harry broke the silence and choked, “Belle, why don’t you return the house to Zach’s mother? I’m fine living anywhere. You can’t just get a divorce for my sake!”

His words painted me as an unreasonable, wicked person.

Belle then trained thoroughly disappointed eyes on me. “How can you talk about divorce so easily? You’re just saying this on purpose to drive Harry to a corner! Hurry up and apologize to him!”

I could not hear her words clearly. All I saw was that my mother’s face had turned even paler.

When I saw the jeep parked on the side, I felt as if I saw hope. “I’m not the one in the wrong! Hurry up and send my mom to the hospital!”

Harry suddenly cradled his thigh and groaned. With a pained expression, he said, “I’m sorry. I’ll apologize to Zach. How can a widower like me be worthy of a child…?”

Upon seeing his pained and aggrieved expression, Belle immediately brought him into the jeep.

I ran up to grab the door, but she flung my arm away.

My unhealed head wound split up again, and it hurt so much that I felt dizzy.

The neighbors did not know the truth, and since they heard the argument just now, they avoided me like the plague.

No one was willing to send us to the hospital.

I carried my mother around to ask for help from strangers before finally getting someone willing to send us there.

With my mother in my arms, I ran to the hospital entrance, only to be stopped outside. “Sorry, Mr. River, but we don’t have any other extra beds. We can’t treat your mother.”

“What on earth are you saying? When have you suffered to such a degree when you were with me? You will not be able to last until the end!” Belle was staring at me with eyes full of pity, as if she really could not stand the thought of me suffering, but she did not know that my days here had been the happiest and the most meaningful in my life. In the past, she had always prioritized Harry, and my needs were always second place to her. When I saw her taking care of Harry’s every need, I was always sad. I had argued about this with her before, but she always brought Adriana out as her defense. “Before Adriana passed away, she asked me to take care of Harry. Stop being paranoid.”Yet the truth showed that things were not innocent between them, and I was not a man “who simply enjoyed life,” as she claimed. I laughed. “Shouldn’t you be happy that I stepped aside for Harry? Get the divorce procedure done and deal with it. Stop pretending to be loyal here.”My words seemed to have hurt

Zach's POVAfter arriving in Tubo, I cast aside all unnecessary thoughts and joined the ranks of the teachers. I had once given up on tertiary education so that I could stay home and become Belle’s support. Finally, I became the me who was filled with dreams once more. Even though conditions there were horrible, the people were friendly and gave me a lot of joy. Alas, an earthquake struck near the elementary school where I taught and shattered my peace. “Mr. River!”I shielded two young children beneath me and instructed the others to hide under their desks, but the dilapidated roof collapsed and hit my body. “Don’t panic, and don’t come out!”I did not know how much time had passed, but the earthquake finally relented, and I fainted when I was finally unable to hang on. When I woke up again, the villagers were surrounding my bed. The moment they saw me open my eyes, they sighed in relief. “Mr. River, you’re awake! That’s great!”“We were so worried about you. You wer

“What?!” Belle swayed, and she nearly collapsed. “Why would he go to provide aid to Tubo all of a sudden? That place is horrible! How can he stand to be in that place alone?!”Mark Newton, the person who had brought the news to her, finally caught his breath. “Mr. Grant personally made the call and said that he would not come back.”Belle collapsed backward onto her couch the very next second. It was painful to imagine just how much despair Zach must have been in to say those things. “No! I refuse to believe that he’s abandoning me! Get the jeep ready. I’m going to find him!”Mark quickly tried to convince her otherwise. “But the research center needs you! You need to follow up on an important project, so you can’t leave now.”At that moment, Belle’s eyes pooled with tears. Feeling wistful, Belle stared at the empty room and found herself unable to say anything. She had thought that Zach would be able to accept the child born between her and Harry, due to her belief that Zach

Third-Person POV“Zach!” The moment Belle stepped into her house, she started looking for Zach, only to find that the luggage bag Zach had packed yesterday was gone. She called out to him a few more times, and the neighbors came out to check.“Mrs. Wilson, where is Zach? Why isn’t he around?”Mrs. Wilson sighed. “His mother suffered from a heart attack, and there were no beds available at the hospital. She passed away not too long ago. I think he’s organizing her funeral at her house. Honestly, he seemed really affected. You should go comfort him.”Belle immediately ran to Nina’s house. There were memorial candles all over the place. Nina’s coffin was even positioned in the living room. Her neighbors were crying sadly. When she saw this, Belle finally believed that Nina had actually passed away. “How could this be?”The moment the neighbors saw her, they started feeling indignant for Zach’s sake. “Ms. York, I’m not trying to be nosy here, but you should be more considerate

“Why? Belle has a reserved bed here. This is her mother-in-law. How can you say that there are no beds here?” I lost my composure. The nurse answered timidly, “Ms. York came here just now and admitted her brother-in-law. That’s why the bed is occupied.”I turned my head stiffly and saw Harry lying in the reserved bed. He was eating a peeled slice of apple. Belle was sitting by his bed anxiously and giving him water. She looked more like his wife than she did mine. Alas, my appearance destroyed the harmonious atmosphere they had going. “Belle, my mom—”“Why did you follow me here?! Harry’s wound reopened because of what you said! Had we gotten here any later, he might have lost his legs!” Belle interrupted me furiously. Harry had picked up another slice of apple and was chewing at it languidly. No matter what, he did not appear to be in a medical emergency. Belle then shoved me out of the ward and locked the door. I trembled like a leaf and could only think of ways to get

“That’s great, Zach!” But after a brief period of excitement, I heard hesitation and worry. “But you have to think about this carefully.
