The camera hanging from Aria Mendoza's neck had witnessed more broken things than most people ever would.

For six years, she had chased stories across Mexico, believing every photograph deserved honesty. A picture could be beautiful, but if it lied, it wasn't worth taking. That belief had earned her respect, sleepless nights, and just enough freelance work to keep a roof over her head. It hadn't earned her wealth, but she had never cared much about money. As long as she had her camera, she had purpose.

The familiar sound of applause pulled her from her thoughts.

Someone whistled from across the newsroom.

"Cover girl!"

Aria looked up just as her editor walked toward her, waving a printed copy of the magazine's digital proof.

"I was going to email you," he said with a grin, "but I figured watching your face would be much more entertaining."

He placed the proof on her desk.

There it was.

Her photograph stretched across the cover.

For a heartbeat, she simply stared.

"This..." She looked up at him, then back at the magazine. "This is real?"

"You earned it."

Her fingers traced the edge of the glossy page as though it might disappear if she touched it too hard.

Three weeks in northern Mexico.

One damaged camera.

Thousands of photographs.

Dozens of interviews.

Countless nights wondering if anyone would care enough to read the story. Now they would.

"I'm proud of you," her editor said quietly.

A smile spread across her face, warm and genuine.

"So am I."

He gave her shoulder a gentle pat before walking away to answer a ringing phone.

Aria remained where she was, unable to stop smiling.

She reached for her phone and opened Jesse's contact. Her thumb hovered over the call button before she laughed softly and locked the screen again.

No.

She wanted to see his face when she told him.

He'd probably scoop her into one of those ridiculous bear hugs that always left her feet dangling above the floor. Then he'd insist they order too much food, complain about spending money, and somehow end up eating half the dessert himself.

He never missed a chance to celebrate her victories.

The thought made her smile even wider.

She packed away her equipment with unusual care, slipped the magazine into her bag and headed out just as the newsroom began to empty

The bakery near Jesse's apartment was still open.

The bell above the door chimed as she stepped inside.

"One strawberry cheesecake, please."

The young cashier smiled apologetically.

"You're lucky. That's the last one."

"I'll take my chances."

As the woman boxed the cake, Aria glanced through the display window at the florist next door

Fresh roses.

Jesse always pretended flowers were a waste of money.

"They just die after a few days," he'd say.

Yet every morning, without fail, he'd replace the water before leaving for work.

He'd never admit it.

She'd never called him out on it.

Some habits were too sweet to ruin.

A few minutes later, she walked out carrying a white cake box in one hand and six red roses in the other.

The taxi crawled through the evening traffic while the city glowed beneath streaks of orange and gold. Street musicians performed outside cafés. Vendors shouted their final bargains before closing for the night. Somewhere nearby, children chased a football across the road, laughing so loudly that even passing strangers smiled.

Everything looked ordinary.

Life often did...

Right before it changed forever.

By the time the taxi stopped outside Jesse's apartment building, the sun had almost disappeared behind the skyline.

She paid the driver, thanked him and climbed the familiar staircase.

Apartment 3C.

Home away from home.

She smiled as she unlocked the door with the spare key Jesse had given her months ago.

"You don't have to knock," he'd told her back then. "This place is yours too."

The memory warmed her heart.

Until she stepped inside.

The first thing she noticed was the smell.

Vanilla.

She stopped just inside the doorway.

Jesse hated vanilla coffee.

He always joked it smelled like melted candles.

Her eyes drifted toward the dining table.

Two mugs.

One still steaming.

A cream-colored handbag rested on the chair.

Susanne's.

Aria frowned.

Her best friend visited often.

There was nothing unusual about that.

"Susanne?"

No answer.

She took another step.

A pair of red high heels lay carelessly beside the sofa. That was as unusual.

Susanne never took off her shoes unless she planned to stay for hours.

Aria tightened her grip on the cake box.

Maybe they'd ordered dinner.

Maybe they were watching a movie.

Maybe Susanne had spilled coffee on herself.

Maybe...

A burst of laughter echoed down the hallway.

Jesse's.

Then Susanne's.

Aria froze.

There was something different about it.

It wasn't the easy laughter of two friends talking.

It was softer.

Warmer.

Comfortable in a way that made her stomach tighten.

Without realizing it, she started walking.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The hallway suddenly seemed much longer than she remembered.

The bedroom door wasn't completely closed.

A thin line of light spilled through the gap.

She stopped outside it.

Her heart hammered against her ribs.

A strange uneasiness settled over her

For one impossible second, she thought about turning around.

Leaving.

Pretending she'd never come.

Then she shook the thought away.

She was being ridiculous.

She reached for the handle.

The door swung inward.

The cake slipped from her hands.

The white box hit the floor first.

The roses scattered across the hardwood.

Neither sound came close to the one inside her chest.

Jesse jerked upright.

Susanne gasped.

The blanket barely covered either of them.

For several endless seconds...

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Aria couldn't.

The room blurred.

Her knees threatened to give way, and she caught herself against the doorframe before she collapsed.

This couldn't be real.

It couldn't.

Her mind searched desperately for another explanation.

Any explanation.

There wasn't one.

Their clothes were scattered across the bedroom floor.

His shirt.

Her dress.

His watch on the bedside table.

Her necklace tangled in the sheets.

Every detail screamed the same truth.

Jesse was the first to find his voice.

"Aria..."

She looked at him as though she'd never seen him before.

"No."

The word came out barely louder than a breath.

"No..."

Susanne pulled the blanket closer around herself, tears already filling her eyes.

"It isn't—"

"Don't."

Aria raised a trembling hand.

"Please... don't."

Jesse climbed out of bed.

"Just let me explain."

She laughed.

The sound startled even her.

It wasn't laughter.

It was disbelief breaking apart inside her.

"Explain what?"

Her voice shook now.

"Explain how long you've been sleeping with my best friend?"

Silence.

Neither of them answered.

Her chest tightened.

"How long?"

Susanne lowered her eyes.

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

Aria stared at her.

That was her explanation?

"You were my family."

"I know."

"I trusted you."

"I'm sorry."

"And you still came into my home..."

Fresh tears rolled down Susanne's face.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

"No?"

Aria gave a slow, hollow smile.

"Then when exactly were you planning to stop?"

Neither of them spoke.

She looked at Jesse.

"What about you?"

He rubbed both hands over his face before meeting her eyes.

"I kept telling myself you'd slow down after the next assignment."

She frowned.

"What?"

"Then another assignment came... and another. You were always working, always traveling. Somewhere along the way..." He swallowed hard. "I stopped feeling like I still had a girlfriend."

Aria blinked.

For a second...

She genuinely wondered if she'd heard him correctly.

"So this..."

She pointed at the bed.

"...is because I worked?"

"I didn't say that."

"You just did."

"No, I'm saying we drifted apart."

"We drifted apart?"

Her voice rose despite herself.

"I worked those extra assignments because your business was failing."

His face fell.

"I paid the rent, Jesse."

Silence.

"I covered the electricity."

More silence.

"I bought the groceries."

She felt tears finally spill down her cheeks.

"I gave you money whenever you needed it."

Every word hurt more than the last.

"I thought I was building our future."

Jesse lowered his head.

Aria laughed bitterly.

"I was."

"You were building another one."

The room fell silent.

There was nothing left to fix.

Nothing left to understand.

She bent slowly and picked up her camera.

The cake was ruined.

The roses were crushed.

But the camera...

The camera had survived.

She hugged it against her chest.

Then she turned toward the door.

"Aria!"

Jesse's voice followed her.

She stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she needed him to hear her one last time.

Without turning around, she said quietly,

"When I remember today..."

Her voice cracked.

"...I hope the best part is walking away."

She walked out before either of them could answer.

Outside, the evening air felt colder than it had an hour earlier.

She didn't know where she was going.

She only knew she couldn't stay.

Her phone vibrated inside her handbag.

She wiped at her tears before pulling it out.

A new email had just arrived.

Freelance Assignment Opportunity – Arizona Wildlife Coverage

Applicants Required Immediately.

Aria stared at the screen through blurred eyes.

Arizona.

A different place.

A different beginning.

Behind her, Jesse called her name again from somewhere inside the apartment.

This time...

She didn't look back.

Her thumb hovered over the screen for only a second before she pressed Apply.

Sometimes the first step toward healing wasn't moving on.

It was simply finding the strength to leave.

The square wasn't empty. It's simply... paused. A moment ago, children had been racing after a runaway chicken while their parents laughed from the sidewalk. Now conversations faded one by one, as though someone had quietly turned the volume down on the entire town. Aria lowered her camera. "Did something happen?"Darius didn't answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the tree line beyond the last row of buildings. Across the street, Mr. Jenkins whistled sharply. His old sheepdog, which had been happily sniffing around a flower bed moments earlier, came running without hesitation. Even the animal seemed uneasy."You noticed it too?" Aria asked.Darius nodded once."The dogs always do."She looked around again.Mrs. Alvarez had stopped arranging pastries in her display window. The violinist who'd been playing near the fountain quietly packed away his instrument. Nobody looked frightened, but everyone seemed... alert."What are they waiting for?""I'm hoping it's nothing."She glanced

The following morning, Pine Ridge looked nothing like the town Aria had seen the day before.Golden sunlight spilled over the rooftops, children raced bicycles down Main Street, and the smell of fresh bread drifted from the bakery on the corner. Somewhere, a radio played an old country song while someone sang along terribly enough to make a few passersby laugh. If she hadn't witnessed the fear that settled over the town every evening, she would have believed Pine Ridge was the safest place on earth. She stepped out onto the estate's front porch with her camera hanging around her neck. The cool mountain air brushed against her face. For the first time since arriving in Arizona, she felt... lighter. Not happy. Not yet.But lighter."You actually slept."She turned.Darius leaned against one of the wooden pillars, holding two paper cups of coffee. His hair was still damp from a shower, and unlike the day before, he wasn't dressed in dark clothes.
