Chapter 1

It had just started pouring when I came out of the hospital after my follow-up.

Standing at the entrance, I stared at the word "terminal stage" printed on the diagnosis slip. Strangely, I felt relieved.

Both tests came back with the same result. I had no choice but to accept it.

At this moment, I felt extremely calm as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I decided not to think about it and called Freddie Sanford.

I'd been keeping this from him, but I figured it was time to come clean.

The call barely rang once before a robotic voice informed me he was on another call.

My heart sank. I knew he had declined it on purpose.

Freddie had grown sick of me ever since I confessed to him when I was drunk.

To him, I'd gone from his obedient sister to a shameless woman trying to seduce her own brother. But in fact, we weren't even related by blood.

I didn't give up. I called again and again, until he finally picked up.

"What is it?" His voice was frighteningly cold.

My heart sank even further. Clenching the diagnosis slip, I found myself at a loss for words.

"What exactly do you want?" he snapped.

Freddie's patience was wearing thin. I could practically picture him frowning on the other end of the line.

He never used to be like this.

I pressed my lips and looked out at the curtain of rain. "Fred, can you come pick me up from the hospital? I need to talk to you."

As soon as I said that, he lashed out furiously. "Rosalie Hunter, are you seriously faking an illness right now? Is this fun for you?"

Freddie ended the call before I could even respond.

I stood frozen, unable to make sense of his sudden outburst. But the next moment, a message from his girlfriend, Bianca Reed, popped up. Everything became clear.

"Are you trying to ruin our date? Who do you think you are?"

It was just two simple sentences, but the mockery in them cut deep.

I didn't reply. Instead, I tapped into Bianca's profile almost on instinct.

One glance was all it took for a chill to sweep over me. I stood frozen on the spot.

Freddie had proposed to her.

The photo grid was filled with all sorts of jewelry and luxury goods, with a huge diamond ring particularly standing out.

My eyes locked on the photos of them kissing and their group shots with friends. I stared blankly before crouching down and covering my mouth.

I was unable to hold back my sobs. They were getting married, and I was the last to know.

Freddie hadn't breathed a word to me. Was he afraid I'd show up and ruin the proposal? His outburst earlier was because he thought I was making a scene.

So that was how low he thought of me.

The diagnosis slip was all crumpled in my hand. I recalled what the doctor had said. "Ms. Hunter, given your current condition, you likely have less than a month left. I suggest informing your family soon so they can start making arrangements."

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 11

Over the next four years, Freddie kept interfering with the plot. He got rid of the school bullies and even shoved that scumbag Hugo out of the picture.Under his protection, it really did seem like the plot had been reversed. However, it was all an illusion. Once a fate was written, there was no escaping it.The system warned him repeatedly. No matter what he did, I would still die. He should just give up.Freddie didn't believe it until I died right in front of him.At that moment, he nearly lost his mind.He ignored the system's warnings and used up his accumulated points to trade for a chance to rewind time. But no matter how hard he tried, I always ended up dead. After countless attempts, the desire to keep me alive became an obsession. His points dwindled, and the time he could rewind became shorter and shorter. The last time he opened his eyes, it was the day before I confessed my feelings to him. It was late at night, and I was already sound asleep.Freddie watched my

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 10

Life returned to peace. After dreaming of all that torment and illness, I'd become more concerned about my health.I set aside a day for a comprehensive medical checkup in the hospital. The report showed I was in perfect health. Even the doctors praised me repeatedly.During this time, Hugo still hadn't given up on me. He even declared that if he couldn't win me over, he'd remain single forever. Gradually, my heart began to waver. Not because I had fallen for him, but it felt like a voice in my mind persistently told me to forget Freddie and start a new life. Yet, at the same time, another voice deep in my heart told me I couldn't forget him. The two voices tangled, leaving me torn. But in the end, the one in my mind won.Just when I finally let go of the past and decided to accept Hugo's confession, I stumbled upon something in Freddie's belongings.I opened an old safe that had been sealed for years. There were only two things inside—a preserved camellia sealed inside

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 9

My life came to an end on the day Freddie got married.I saw his grand, extravagant wedding ceremony through the media's coverage. However, he didn't look happy. His expression was solemn, as if weighed down by something.Still, he steadily slipped a beautiful diamond ring onto Bianca's finger. The moment they kissed, I closed my eyes.I didn't know if people always saw strange illusions on the brink of death. In mine, I was standing on a cold dune, watching Freddie walk right past me into an endless darkness.Instinctively, I wanted to chase after him. But no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't catch up.The moment his figure completely disappeared, I abruptly opened my eyes. What I saw were blooming camellias. I was sitting on a wicker chair in the veranda. The pouring sunlight stung my eyes. Everything felt like a dream—a delirious vision at the edge of death. As I was in a daze, a housekeeper suddenly came over and asked what I wanted for dinner.Snapping back to m

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 8

Time flew by, and my body grew increasingly weaker by the day.I could feel my body shutting down, slowly losing all function. Even my senses were starting to dull.Sometimes, I'd wake up to find my pillow soaked in blood. In the days leading up to Freddie's wedding, I almost couldn't get out of bed.Every tiny movement sent pain shooting from my bones, sharp enough to leave me drenched in cold sweat. Every night before closing my eyes, I wondered if I'd wake up the next day. And yet, I stubbornly held on. I wanted to stay alive until the day of his wedding.Perhaps then, I could finally let go.I thought that in my few remaining days, I would only be able to see Freddie through my phone. To my surprise, he came to see me the day before his wedding. He took one look at my frail appearance and frowned in annoyance. "Don't you know to see a doctor when you're sick? How did you let yourself fall apart like this?"My face was blank, and I remained silent.Even now, he still did

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 7

By the time the gardeners arrived, it was already dark.My face was blank as I stood beneath the veranda and watched them dig up the camellia tree. All the flowers fell in an instant, sinking into the soil. A breeze swept through at that very moment, as if singing a farewell song."Oh my, these flowers are truly beautiful. I should've waited for all of them to fall before digging up this tree." Bianca closely observed my reaction as she spoke sarcastically.I didn't even look at her and just walked toward the courtyard."What are you doing?" Freddie suddenly grabbed my arm. After shaking off his hand, I picked up the most beautiful camellia blossom and cradled it in my palm.He stepped forward again, frowning as he asked impatiently, "What's the point of all this?"Since the day I confessed to him, I'd lost count of how many times I'd heard those same words. The line that came next would always be, "Don't expect me to feel sorry for you."I looked at him with a blank face. "I

  • A Heart Broken by Time   Chapter 6

Freddie paused for a moment but didn't object. He then casually pulled out a set of keys and tossed them onto the table. "I've already bought you a place. You can move out in the next few days."I stared at the keys and smiled wryly within. So, he'd been planning to drive me away all along.Bianca looked thrilled. She didn't bother hiding the smugness in her eyes as she grinned at me.I picked up the keys and glanced toward the garden. "Can I move the white camellia in the courtyard to my new place?" Freddie frowned. "It's already March. The flowers will wither soon. There's no point moving it now. Besides, the flowers will all fall off during the transplant." I smiled faintly. "It'll bloom again next year."Even though I wouldn't be around to see it.Freddie looked at me deeply and said nothing more. However, Bianca suddenly chimed in, "Oh my, I've heard that camellias symbolize bad luck. The way they drop resembles a decapitation. Should we just dig it up? I want to plant
