Chapter 1

Derek Sadler helped me up. His lips quivered for a long moment before he finally heaved a sigh. He said, "It's the Sadler family's misfortune. We are destined to have no heirs. What a sin."

The old man, who was always so composed, let tears slip down his cheeks. "The Sadler family owes you, Molly. Whatever you want, just say the word."

I lowered my head, clutching the urn to my chest, my gaze hollow. "Let me go."

Derek agreed. Three days later, he arranged for me to leave the country.

When I returned to the villa and pushed open the door, a bucket of icy water crashed down over me.

Peggy Olson strolled over happily and flung a used condom into my face. "Adrian said you should clean this."

It was pointless to clean that. However, I knew that it was just another one of Adrian's attempts to humiliate me. After years of experiencing his cruelty, I had grown numb.

I remembered another time when I had accidentally torn Peggy's stockings while doing the laundry. For that mistake, Adrian ordered someone to rip out my fingernails as punishment.

Feeling numb, I made my way upstairs to clean up the mess they'd left behind in the throes of their passion.

Adrian appeared at the stair landing. He raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Who are you trying to fool with that miserable expression? Didn't you just go complaining to Grandpa? You're so fond of complaining. It seems like you can't keep your mouth shut. Why don't you use your mouth to serve me during the livestream tomorrow night? I'm sure everyone would love to see how skilful you are."

I lowered my head and remained silent. A dull ache pulsed in my chest, but I had become numb to it long ago.

Feeling annoyed at my silence, Adrian's frown deepened as he strode toward me.

Just then, Peggy darted forward and snatched the urn from my arms. "What's this box you're carrying? It's exquisite. I could use a new jewelry case!"

Horror jolts through me, my eyes widening and my veins tightening as a desperate scream tears out of my throat. "Give it back!"

I lunged for the urn. Adrian immediately stepped in front of Peggy and drove his foot into my chest.

It was as if an invisible hand were squeezing my heart, forcing the air from my lungs.

I glared at Adrian with reddened eyes. "Give me back the box. It's my fault. I shouldn't have tattled. Just give it back. I'll do anything you want!"

Pain stabbed deep in my chest when I saw his cold, unyielding stare. I slowly sank to my knees. "Please…"

I knew that Adrian despised our child and me. If he realized what was inside that box, he'd likely burn it immediately.

Adrian was caught off guard by my desperation. He glanced at the box in Peggy's hands and instructed, "Give it back to her. It's just a worthless box. I can get you something better."

Peggy pouted, her eyes flashing with resentment. Then she smirked, holding out the box and deliberately letting it slip from her fingers.

The box hit the floor with a crash. Peggy recoiled in surprise and then deliberately stomped on the box in disgust. "What the hell is this? It's disgusting!"

I knew that Adrian wouldn't leave. He was a stubborn man who did whatever he wanted, never sparing a thought for others. For three months, he lingered at the foot of my apartment building, hoping to speak to me every day. Derek tried sending people to drag him back home, but Adrian would rather fight them off than give up. When he appeared with a bouquet of roses the 99th time, I tossed them straight into the trash. His face went pale as he pleaded, "Molly, just tell me what you want. I'll get you anything. Please, talk to me."I turned and looked at him, my expression cold. It seemed to hit him like a blow, his eyes reddening with tears.I lowered my gaze and scoffed. "You've brought me roses 99 times. You adamantly believe that I'll forgive you, just like old times. You haven't changed at all. "If you had bothered to get to know me, you'd know that I don't like roses. I've always preferred sunflowers. Peggy was the one who liked roses. In the five years we've been together, yo

Adrian knelt at the gates of Derek's villa, pleading for any clue to my whereabouts. His once-chiseled features were now carved with sorrow and despair. While Derek kept his doors shut for three days, Adrian stayed on his knees, forsaking food and water until thirst finally felled him.Eventually, Derek relented and said, "This is your only chance. If Molly isn't willing to return, you are to come back and sign the divorce papers. You need to leave her alone." Meanwhile, after I went overseas, Derek arranged a teacher for me, and I discovered a hunger for knowledge. When he first rescued me and brought me into the Sadler family, I didn't know what to do with my life. All I wanted was to repay Derek's kindness and to shower Adrian with love. After marrying Adrian, he became the center of my world, and my studies took a back seat. Now, I wanted to do something for myself. One weekend, after saying goodbye to my tutor, I went grocery shopping. On my way home, I ran into Adrian. He w

Derek shot Adrian a cold, disappointed look. He said, "Ten children. Molly gave you ten chances. She's no longer that blessed, fertile woman; she'll never be a mother again. Adrian Sadler, they were your children! How could you be so heartless? Never mind. Perhaps we really were cursed."Adrian dropped to his knees and grabbed Derek's leg. "Ten children? Wasn't it nine? What are you talking about, Grandpa?" he asked frantically.Derek shook him off and straightened his back as he forced himself to stand. Then, he turned and headed toward his room. "The Sadler family was cursed to have no heirs. Just go home. Are you certain you never had feelings for Molly? Be honest with yourself. If you never did, I would never have forced that marriage on you. "You've spent your whole life running from the truth. Are you really sure you don't know why the tenth child is gone?"The words hit Adrian with crushing weight. He remained kneeling, shame and dread winding around him until he struggle

Peggy's words died in her throat. Panic flickered across her face, but she quickly pulled herself together, her voice turning soft and sweet. "Adrian, you're back so early."Adrian's eyes narrowed as he cast her a withering glance. Then, he signaled the bodyguards to bring in another doctor. "Is it possible to run a paternity test now?" he asked. The doctor hesitated before replying, "Technically, yes. However, I don't recommend it."Peggy's body was trembling as she stared at Adrian, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What are you doing, Adrian?"The bodyguards had already taken her cousin away. Adrian cupped her cheek gently and said, "Just take the test for my peace of mind."Peggy slumped on the edge of the bed, her face drained of color. She realized that Adrian might have overheard her earlier. She didn't have a choice. Tears slipped down Peggy's face as she turned her head, her profile a near-perfect reflection of his first love."Can't we wait until the baby is born? A te

Adrian's face turned ashen as he tore the divorce papers into scraps. However, he tried to control his rage in front of Derek. "So she went complaining to you again? How dare you threaten me with a divorce! As if she has any right to do that." Adrian then turned on his heel and stormed off.Derek, shaking with fury, flung his cane to the floor. He collapsed onto the couch, burying his face in his hands. "The Sadler family is cursed. We are destined to have no heirs!"Adrian was convinced that I would never leave him. After all, I had endured years of his cruelty and had always found some way to sleep with him, never once daring to bring up divorce. So, he assumed that I was simply throwing a tantrum and hiding in Derek's villa.Meanwhile, Adrian showed his affection for Peggy by bringing her to every occasion, wanting to force me to appear. A week passed, and Adrian still hadn't received a single message from me.In the past, no matter how fiercely we fought, I would always cal

In the courtyard, black smoke billowed, thick and choking. Flames consumed everything in their path.My suitcase and personal belongings smoldered at the heart of the fire. I dragged myself forward, my legs buckling beneath me.Teetering on the edge of despair, I plunged my hand into the blaze. Ignoring the burns searing my skin, I clamped onto the suitcase and hauled it free.My palms turned to raw pulp, the acrid smell of burning flesh hanging heavy in the air.My face turned ashen, yet my fingers locked onto the edges, refusing to let go.Only as the fire crept toward my clothes did a figure burst from the villa.Adrian yanked me aside and pursed his lips. "Are you crazy?"I said nothing, ignoring the pain in my hands as I sifted through the wreckage. At last, my eyes fixed on him as I weakly said, "Where are the things from the suitcase? Where's the hairpin?"Adrian's brows furrowed as he pulled Peggy protectively behind him. "It's just a hairpin. Why are you so worked up?
