Chapter 4

Author: Against the Flow
I was so mad that I laughed aloud. Then, I grabbed the glasses on the ground and flung them in Evie's face.

She didn't manage to duck in time, and the glass struck her on the forehead. The glass overturned and spilled the drink all over her clothes as well.

Evie immediately screamed in pain and flailed her arms around. I felt better after seeing that her clothes were drenched and her forehead was bleeding as well.

Some people crowded around me and Ingrid and glared at us. I didn't care and glared back at them, unwilling to show them any weakness. I shot back, "So, are you all the mongrels she spoke of as well? Lapdogs, perhaps? Are you going to beat me and my daughter up just to make her happy?"

The guests stopped short and exchanged glances with each other when they heard me. Then, they took a few steps back and decided to just watch from the sidelines.

Oscar had grabbed a bunch of napkins, carefully helping Evie clean up. He reprimanded me and yelled, "That's too much, Aurora! How could you bully another person like that? I see that I've spoiled you way too much that you've forgotten where you stood!"

Then, he turned to the bodyguards next to him and said, "Take those two troublemakers home and lock them up for three days and nights without any food or water!"

The bodyguards nodded and came to grab us.

However, I screamed with a stern expression on my face, "Don't you dare touch us! We have legs and can walk on our own!"

I forced the tears back in and took a deep breath. I saw it clearly now. Oscar never loved me or Ingrid. He still chose Evie over us both when presented with the choice.

My heart was numb now. I had lost all hope in him. My feelings for him had all turned into ashes.

I picked Ingrid up and held her in my arms. Then, with my chest out, I addressed everyone and said, "My daughter is not an orphan. She is my precious daughter, whom I lovingly carried for nine months and gave birth to."

I then addressed Oscar directly and said, "Since you refuse to acknowledge that she is your daughter, then from today onward, she will no longer be yours. I hereby denounce your father-daughter relationship with her!"

Ingrid started sobbing harder when she heard me say that. I held back the tears in my eyes and ignored the tingling sensation in my nose, but a sob still escaped me.

"Baby… Don't cry anymore," I said, comforting Ingrid. "You can't call him 'Daddy' anymore."

Ingrid kept shaking her head, unable to accept it. She just continued to cry. Oscar, meanwhile, was stunned. He stared at me in great shock.

I knew that he had supposedly asked me for permission back then to be with Evie. I had only agreed because he said he was going to comfort her, before promising to give me and my daughter an official title afterward.

However, I no longer needed the official title.

His eyes locked onto mine, desperately searching my eyes to understand the thoughts in my head. I just said coldly to him, "Also, I will not have anything to do with you anymore."

Then, I turned to leave. My world no longer included Oscar.

Ingrid was still young, but she knew how to read the room. She sensed that the situation had gotten tense, so she didn't say anything else and just buried her face in my shoulder, crying silently.

When I reached the exit, Evie suddenly called out to me from behind.

"Aurora. Oscar gave you the Moon Diamond in the past, didn't he? That's a symbol of family status. Since I am now his wife, and my son will be the rightful heir, you should return it now."

I was taken aback. So, they had brought me here today not just to humiliate me but also to take the Moon Diamond back from me. The Moon Diamond was a family heirloom, and Oscar had given it to me as an engagement gift when he asked me for my hand in marriage.

He said that it was proof of his everlasting love for me. Since I was the new owner of the Moon Diamond, that also meant that I was the owner of his heart.

It was precisely because of his promises that I decided to abandon my family, conceal my true identity, and stay with him. Now that I thought about it, I found it hilariously ironic.

Oscar averted his eyes and hung his head, and he saw the pitiful and accusing look in my eyes.

So, Oscar was a person who avoided taking responsibility for his words and refused to be held accountable for anything.

I had been blind this whole time, falling in love with a person who didn't deserve to be loved.

Seeing that I still refused to budge, Evie grabbed Oscar's arm and glared at him to say something.

It was only then that Oscar spoke. "Aurora. Give up the Moon Diamond."

Oscar never imagined that I would ever slap him. He held a hand to his swollen cheek and cocked his head at me in deep shock and confusion.Dad also stood out and pointed at him in anger. "You bastard! If you dare to humiliate my daughter again, I will wipe your entire family off the face of the earth!"When Oscar finally learned of my true identity, he was beyond shocked. He couldn't even snap back to the present for a long time. When his senses finally returned, the shock and disbelief were still written all over his face. "You actually… You actually hid your status and identity from me! Why didn't you tell me before?"Then, he suddenly grinned in delight. "Since you're a respectable person now, that means you can be with me without a worry in the world! We can make our relationship public! Our family can reunite!"When I saw how materialistic he was, I couldn't help shaking my head in disappointment."In your dreams!"Oscar frowned. Just as he was about to speak, I interrupte

Fortunately for me, I had always known that Oscar was a selfish person. When he was in love, he could promise them the world, but when he was out of love, he would dispose of them at once. While I was still enjoying the juicy pieces of gossip, Mom and Dad arrived with Ingrid. The guests immediately stopped gossiping with each other.Dad caught sight of me and started walking toward me with a smile on his face. He held my hand and introduced me to the rest of the guests."Hello, everyone. This is my daughter, Aurora Finnigan, the next heiress of the Finnigan family."The group of people who'd just gossiped about me earlier immediately looked embarrassed and horrified. It was inappropriate to gossip about people who were standing right next to them, no matter if it was the good kind or the bad kind of gossip.I didn't mind, however, and looked at the guests graciously."Good day, everyone. I am Aurora Finnigan. Thank you for your love and support for my family and me."The guests

Oscar then flew back to my city. This time, he engaged help from both the authorities and the underground organization to search for me, telling them that I was to be found by hook or by crook.Luckily, my family was powerful and influential enough to stop outsiders from interfering in our lives. After returning to my family, Ingrid and I lived normal, peaceful lives. At first, I thought that I would get a harsh scolding from Mom and Dad when I got back home. To my surprise, they didn't scold me or reprimand me at all—instead they treated me warmly and with much kindness. They seemed even more delighted when they were introduced to Ingrid. They welcomed her into their arms and refused to let go of her. Also, Mom and Dad decided to name Ingrid the next family heiress, and they began properly educating her on everything she needed to know.I found Dad and apologized sincerely to him, admitting that I had made the wrong choice years ago. Dad didn't blame me and comforted me instead.

Soon, Oscar quickly realized that someone was purposely stopping him from finding me. No matter how much manpower he sent out looking for me, some powerful force would always mess up his investigations. This sent him into depression, and he kept drowning his sorrows in alcohol. One month later, he still wasn't able to track me down. He went to the place where we met for the very first time and sat down on a rock, staring out into the sky.He saw some wild daisies in the grass and picked one. Then, he stared at the flower until he fell into a daze.Evie approached him with a sad look in her eyes. "It's been a month. Are you still refusing to face the truth?"Oscar didn't answer her. She moved in front of him and crouched down, holding his hand in hers."She must know that you're looking for her, but she's staying hidden and refusing to meet you. That means she's disappointed in you. So, why must you continue torturing yourself?"Oscar frowned, pain reflecting in his eyes. He grip

Oscar then went home and got himself drunk. When he woke up again, he saw Evie waiting next to him.Since her back was to him, and she was also wearing my pajama set that I had left behind, Oscar thought she was me and immediately pounced on her, hugging her tightly. He cried in relief, "Rora, you've come back!"Evie stiffened, not daring to move.Just as he was about to kiss her, he suddenly caught a whiff of a familiar yet strange perfume scent. He immediately shoved her away and yelled, "Why are you wearing her clothes?"Evie looked back at him and answered in an upset voice, "You got drunk last night and threw up all over me. I didn't have a change of clothes after taking a shower, so I just grabbed one from the wardrobe."Oscar sat down dejected and rubbed his forehead in frustration.Evie burst into tears. "Don't be angry, Oscar. Since she's already gone, you should forget about her and live happily with me."She then caressed her tummy and said, "We'll be even happier as

I brought Ingrid with me on a flight, and we left for good, never to return. Meanwhile, on the other side of things, Oscar was receiving the well-wishes of his wedding guests. He was just about to put the wedding ring on Evie's finger when he suddenly felt his heart thumping erratically in his chest. He felt flustered all of a sudden. As if having a bad premonition, he quickly whipped out his phone to call me, but he couldn't get through to my number. Then, he read the text message that I sent him.A split second later, his eyes grew as wide as saucers as realization hit him like a lightning bolt. He couldn't stop himself from shivering hard either. He just couldn't believe it. He was absolutely stupefied. When Evie noticed that he was still in a daze and unmoving, she urged him, saying, "Hurry up, Oscar!"Oscar turned to look at her with wide, shaky eyes, reflecting a mix of dilemmas in them.Evie didn't understand his expression, but she noticed that something was wrong.
