Chapter 2

Author: Nancy Vesper
The moment we stepped inside the building, a suffocating stillness swallowed us whole. Strange creaking noises echoed from time to time. The entire first floor looked like a massive banquet hall. A stage stood in the center, with guest seating arranged on both sides.

At the far end of the stage hung a heavy curtain embroidered with vivid crimson mandrake flowers. The flowers looked almost like eyes, which made my stomach twist in discomfort. Yet, they carried a bizarre pull that made people want to walk closer.

Without realizing it, I headed toward the curtain. The skinny guy followed tightly behind me. Just as I reached out to touch one of the flowers, an urgent shout suddenly came from behind us.

“Don’t touch it! Get back!”

Almost at the same instant, a deathly pale hand shot out from behind the curtain. Its fingertips stopped less than an inch from me. I didn’t even have time to think. I grabbed the skinny guy and ran. However, the arm behind us stretched endlessly like rubber.

Right when it was about to catch me, someone yanked us into a guest room on the side.

“Are you trying to get yourselves killed?”

The one who saved us was a male player wearing glasses.

“Don’t touch anything in this place unless you want to die without knowing how!”

It took me a while to calm down and recover from the shock.

“Thanks, man. How did you know it was dangerous?”

The guy with glasses explained that he had cleared another horror game before, so he had some experience. Because of that, he stayed alert whenever he noticed anything unusual.

I wanted to ask more questions, but before I could speak, the entire banquet hall suddenly lit up. Long, elegant drapes descended from the ceiling, while soft string music echoed from somewhere unseen. The gloomy, horrifying hall instantly transformed into something grand and dazzling.

A group of women dressed in flowing pink gowns slid down from the upper floors along the hanging drapes. Every one of them wore a veil masking their faces. They leaped in front of us. One veiled dancer stood before each player.

At the same time, they extended a sleeve toward us, inviting us to dance.

“It’s the dance segment now,” the guy with glasses explained. “We have to accept the invitation and match their dance steps exactly. You cannot make a mistake. Otherwise, you know what happens.”

The players had no choice but to take the dancers’ hands and step onto the stage.

Once everyone was on the stage, the empty guest seats below suddenly came alive. Wine poured itself into glasses, invisible guests raised cups in toasts, and from all around the hall came loud swallowing noises. I didn’t dare take my eyes off my dancer for even a second, terrified I’d miss a movement.

As the music grew faster, the dancers sped up too. I struggled desperately to keep up, not daring to relax for even a moment. After several rapid spins, I nearly lost my balance. In my panic, someone steadied me from behind, saving my life.

Unfortunately, the other players weren’t so lucky. One short, heavyset man tripped and crashed onto the floor. Instantly, every dancer stopped moving. Then, one by one, they removed their veils.

The moment I saw their faces, I gasped in horror. They had no skin. Their raw flesh twitched grotesquely as they surrounded the fallen man, letting out shrill laughter.

“Hehehe! You danced wrong.”

With that, they pounced on him like wild animals. I turned away immediately, too terrified to watch, and my legs trembled uncontrollably.

Not long after, blood spread across the entire stage. Only after the dancers finished feeding and dispersed could I finally throw up.

Seeing that the guy with glasses remained relatively calm, I asked him, “Was the game you cleared as bloody as this?”

He shook his head.

“The one I entered was a D-rank—the lowest level in the game. The survival rate was fifty percent. So, people still died, but it wasn’t as horrifying. Normally, newcomers start from the lowest rank too. Maybe something went wrong with the system, and it accidentally sent players who should’ve been in D-rank into the highest-level, S-rank.”

“Then… what’s the survival rate for S-rank?”

He paused for a moment before answering, “One percent, but in this game? It’s zero.”

Despair swallowed me whole.

Just as the atmosphere turned hopeless, the guy with glasses suddenly pointed behind me. His mouth opened and closed repeatedly, but no sound came out. A chill ran down my spine.

“What is it?”

“B-Behind you…”

My entire body stiffened. I could feel something staring at me from the darkness behind my back.

“He’s here…”

I forced myself to stay calm long enough to ask, “Who?”

“The boss. The most terrifying existence in the horror game.”

I nearly forgot how to breathe. My head turned, mechanically, like rusted machinery grinding into motion.

In the distance stood a man dressed in black robes. Half of his face was hidden beneath a bronze mask as he silently watched us. Every step he took caused the mandrake flowers embroidered on the curtains to glow brighter.

By the time he got to the center of the stage, black-red liquid began dripping from the flowers, releasing a thick metallic stench into the air. With a raise of his hand, the liquid moved as if alive, gathering at his feet.

The dancers from earlier rushed out again and knelt before him, offering up the severed head of the dead player. He casually lifted the bloody head and examined it in his hand like a toy.

The skinny guy couldn’t hold it in anymore, so he threw up on the spot. The sound immediately caught the masked man’s attention, and his gaze locked onto the skinny guy. Knowing that wasn’t a good sign, I grabbed him and bolted toward the guest rooms. The guy with glasses hurried after us.

While running, I glanced back once, and my eyes met the masked man’s. That figure and that exposed half of his face… Why did he look so much like Lucas?

The building began to shake violently, and out of thin air, twenty doors suddenly appeared in front of us.“The countdown begins. 59, 58, 57…”I rushed toward the doors, trying the key on each of them, one by one.“30, 29, 28, 27…”Half the time was already gone, but I had only managed to test eight doors. Sweat soaked through my clothes, and my hands wouldn’t stop trembling. The man with glasses grabbed the key from me.“I’ll do it!”He was clearly faster than I was, but he also started fumbling under pressure.“5, 4, 3…”Finally, with just five seconds left, he managed to unlock one of the doors.“1!”The top floor of the building collapsed. In that split second, my teammate yanked me through the door.I let out a breath of relief, knowing that we were safe now, or so I thought. Because in that moment, I saw Lucas standing in the distance, silently watching us. Falling debris nearly crushed him.Without hesitation, I took a deep breath and ran straight toward him, grabbi

He placed me back onto the soft bed I had been lying on earlier. I tried to get up and run, but he caught my wrist and held me in place effortlessly.“What? Are you trying to escape?”“Obviously. Or do you expect me to stay and wait for you to tear me apart?”I kicked hard toward his stomach, but he caught my leg with ease. Even as I glared at him furiously, his eyes only grew brighter.“You acting like this makes it really hard for me to hold back.”As he spoke, he buried his face against my neck, and his hot breath brushed my ear.I shoved him away hard and snapped, “You’ve definitely eaten human flesh before. Don’t ever think about kissing me again!”His expression turned innocent. “I’ve rinsed my mouth.”I stared at him in disgust and shock. “You do eat humans?”He laughed and tapped the bridge of my nose lightly. “Do you believe everything I say?”I was about to ask more, but he didn’t give me the chance. He pulled me back down and kissed me.…The comments in the live

After four hours of exhausting struggle, I finally managed to shake off the final boss. Just then, the next round of the banquet began. So, I quickly went to regroup with the others. In one of the rooms on the third floor, the skinny guy let out a long sigh. “We finally found a hidden room, but we can’t crack the lock code. With a place this big, we can’t just search it all over again.”The man with glasses also looked dejected, and the atmosphere was turning increasingly hopeless.“Maybe this password book can help.”I took out a book filled with codes. It recorded the locations of every hidden room in the old building, and even listed the traps inside in shocking detail. After flipping through it, all of them stared at me in disbelief.“Where did you get this?”“Uh… I picked it up in the attic.”In truth, I had taken it from the final boss’s inner coat. However, there was no need to explain all the details to the other players, so I told a small lie.The man with glasses was

Just as we successfully climbed onto the attic floor, a severed limb—still dripping with blood and clutching a knife—flew straight toward us. In the chaos, I caught a glimpse of a mandrake flower tattoo etched onto the arm, but something about it felt off. With no time to think, I simply ran, and somewhere in the panic, I lost the man with glasses. I didn’t even have a clue where I went, but I ended up spotting a hole in the wall. So, I crawled through and discovered an entirely different world inside. On the outside, the building was all wooden structures and beams, but inside the wall cavity, the space was built with black stone blocks. I moved forward with fear, worried about traps or monsters popping out again. After only a few steps, I reached a fork in the path. Three routes lay before me, and I could only choose one. Strangely enough, both the left and right paths had large metal warning signs planted in front of them, like those “Caution: Slippery Floor” signs you see in p

I woke up with a jolt and found myself lying on a soft bed, a thick blanket covering me. The room was warmly and romantically decorated. It was nothing like the rooms I had searched before.I was… alive, but I clearly remember being knocked unconscious by a flying head. So how did I end up here? Before I could think further, the skinny guy and the man with glasses rushed into the room.“You’re alive! That’s great!” the skinny guy exclaimed excitedly. The man with glasses also looked genuinely shocked. He muttered under his breath, “How? I clearly saw the final boss charging straight toward you just now. By all logic, you should’ve already been…” His confusion quickly turned into suspicion as he stared at me. “How are you fine?”… The livestream chat exploded again.“What! How is she still alive?”“I swear, a bunch of players have died in that room. No one ever comes out alive!”“Is she a ghost? I can’t believe my eyes.”“A newbie surviving this long in an S-rank dungeon, b

The live comments flew across the screen.“What’s going on? Why did the final boss appear so early?”“Not only did he show up early, but he didn’t even kill anyone. He let them all escape!”“Is this some kind of bug? Since when has the boss been so merciful? None of the previous players who ran into him survived longer than three seconds!”“Maybe killing too quickly got boring. He probably wants to try a new game this time. These players might end up dying worse than the others.”“The boss has such an insane presence. You can tell he’s ridiculously handsome even through the mask!”“Stop simping already. That’s a literal psychopath! He’s the cruelest and most ruthless boss in the entire game!”…Once we hid inside one of the guest rooms, everyone finally let out a breath of relief. The skinny guy looked guilty. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t hold it in back there and almost got you all killed.”I patted his shoulder to comfort him. “Horror games are a survival hell. It’s not your fau
