Chapter 1

My phone buzzed in my hand so hard my fingers went numb. I looked down. The DMs were stacking up faster than I could read them.

[Sophia Shaw, come on, we're classmates, give me a discount. Fifty for one round, deal?]

[With a body like yours, who could stop at just twice a night?]

[I've sent the money. I'll meet you at the hotel you pinned tonight]

My mind went blank. I threw the phone away.

That suffocating feeling–like a plastic bag being pulled over my head–came rushing back, choking me.

Had I… been given another chance?

Before I could think it through, the door opened slightly, and Tara Mansfield's perfectly familiar face leaned in.

She looked exactly the same as she had in my previous life. Between her fingers, she waved a card printed with my explicit photos, grinning.

"Sophia. I made you famous on this campus. How are you going to thank me?"

"You have no idea–I was just joking around, but those disgusting guys went crazy asking me for your contact."

The old me would have already been crying, asking her how she could do this to me, voice breaking.

Not this me. My teeth clenched so hard they hurt. My whole body trembled with anger.

I snatched the flyer out of her hand and slapped her across the face.

Tara screamed, clutching her cheek in disbelief. "You hit me? I treat you like my best friend, and you can't even take a joke anymore?"

Best friend?

I let out a cold laugh.

In my last life, she spread rumors about me–dirty lies that ruined my reputation. She made my boyfriend, Connor Pierce, point at me outside the dorm and call me a sl*t in front of everyone.

Back then, I thought he just did not love me enough.

A few days later, I caught her kissing him outside the dorm.

I heard her tell him, "I've always known Sophia isn't as innocent as she pretends. I just didn't say anything because she's my best friend."

Calling me her best friend in public, while going after my boyfriend behind my back.

I pointed at the phone on the floor. My voice came out flat.

"A joke? Did you ask me whether I thought it was funny?

"You'd better start thinking about how you're going to explain this to the dean–spreading lies about me."

Just then, footsteps came from the hallway. My roommates, Holly Lane and Cassidy Mars, walked in one after the other.

Holly went straight to Tara's side, concern written all over her face. "The dean? Tara, what's wrong with your dad?"

That's when I remembered. From the day Tara enrolled here, Tara had been using the fact that she shared the dean's last name to hint that she was his daughter–never confirming it, but never denying it either.

My family was the school's biggest investor. I had already confirmed with my dad–the dean did not have a daughter.

In my previous life, I treated her like a friend. I thought she had her reasons, so I never exposed her.

But this time?

I was not going to let her keep up this act in front of me.

Tara quickly composed herself, eyes filling with tears, voice trembling. "I made one little joke, and she hit me."

"What? She hit you?" Holly came charging across the room, jabbing a finger at me. "How could you hit Tara? Who do you think you are?"

Tara put on a pitiful expression. "Connor Pierce is the campus heartthrob. Why would a guy like that fall for someone like you, ordinary as you are? I was helping you. Testing whether he really loves you."

Cassidy caught on and let out a mocking laugh. "I knew it. Tara was helping you, and you throw a tantrum? You really think highly of yourself."

Holly piled on. "It's just a couple of dumb flyers in a group chat. You are so fragile. We're in college–people joke around."

It hit me, listening to them, how easily I'd let this happen the first time around.

That had ended with me locked in a basement by some pervert who saw the flyer.

Three days. Three nights. I died there.

Not this time.

Tara looked at me, scrambled for one last lie. "I didn't steal anything. She's lying."I did not feel like talking to her. I pulled up the news clip about her expulsion on my phone and handed it to the homeowner. The homeowner squinted at it for two seconds. Her face went hard."You shameless piece of work. You got yourself expelled, and you came to my house to tutor my child. You almost got your hands on my son."The officer pulled the woman back gently. "Ma'am. Let us handle it."He did not give Tara any more room to talk. He marched her out and into the cruiser. The homeowner kept yelling after the car. "You little fraud. Don't you dare come back."At the precinct, I went straight at her. "Give me back my things. And you're paying."Tara rolled her eyes. "I borrowed it. You being this petty over a coat?"She peeled the wrinkled coat off and threw it across the table at my feet.I picked it up, shook it out. My voice was flat. "Where's the necklace?"A nasty little smirk.

Two days later I went back to the dorm to pack up.The second I walked in, Cassidy and Holly were on me, all smiles and bobbing heads. "Sophia, you're back? Do you have a lot to pack? Want us to help?"I gave them a cold look and said nothing. They immediately shrank back into the corner, not daring to say another word.I opened my closet and started going through it. My expression darkened. The sapphire necklace my mom gave me for my coming-of-age was gone. It was worth a fortune. So were several designer clothes and pieces of jewelry.I turned to them. "Talk. Who touched my things?"Cassidy quickly waved her hands. "Not me! I didn't take anything! I saw Tara going through your closet a couple days ago, I swear."Holly was nodding before Cassidy was done. "Yeah, I saw it too. It must've been her."I clenched my fists, my chest tightening as I called the police. After listening, the officer sounded slightly helpless."There's no surveillance in the dorm, so it's hard to pro

I pushed through the crowd and headed out, tossing over my shoulder, "Dad, let's go.""Whether Tara stays in school or not doesn't matter to me. I just came to prove I didn't do those things."Behind me, her hoarse voice broke into a cry."Sophia, don't be like this! I know I was wrong. We're still best friends, right?"I stopped and turned around.I looked at her tear-streaked face and let out a cold laugh–then kicked her. She was not ready for it and fell hard, face-first onto the ground."Best friends? You think you deserve that?"Connor ran after me, forcing a smile."Sophia, w-wait for me–"My dad shot him a cold look."What? Want another slap?"He froze, mouth opening and closing, unable to say anything.I did not bother with him. I walked straight toward the school gate.…I had just gotten in the car when a DM came in from Tara. [Sophia, I'm so sorry. I was so wrong. Please forgive me.]Another followed immediately.[I know there were too many people just no

The dean took Michael's phone, scrolled through it, then compared it to what was on Tara's phone. His expression darkened. He turned to her sharply, his voice filled with undisguised disgust. "Tara. do you have anything to say for yourself?"Her legs gave out, and she dropped to the floor. The phone slipped from her hand, landing face-up. On the screen was her chat with the print shop–filled with explicit photos of me.Photos I had never taken."I never took those pictures. Did you use AI to fake them?"She tried to shake her head in denial, but my father cut in coldly."Whether it's AI or not, our technical team can verify it."The crowd lit up. "She used a deepfake on her own friend. That is sick.""So that's how the dean's daughter acts? Impressive."Tara opened her mouth to spin one more time. "I-I didn't mean…"Before she could finish, the dorm supervisor rushed out with a basin of cold water and dumped it over her head."I can testify!" she said sharply. "The one s

My dad's fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. He took one breath, then turned to the dean and laid it down, one word at a time."From this moment on, Shaw Group will withdraw from every project with this institution.""Furthermore, I'm putting the word out across the industry. Every investor on my list is going to know exactly what kind of place you've been running.""Tomorrow morning, I am transferring my daughter."The dean's face turned pale. "Mr. Shaw–please, this is a misunderstanding."At that moment, someone in the crowd muttered just loud enough to be heard, "So for the sake of investment, the dean doesn't even care about his own daughter anymore?"The dean spun around, eyes blazing. "Who said I have a daughter?! I only have one son!"He pointed at Tara, kneeling on the floor."You impersonated my daughter and damaged the school's reputation. I will hold you fully responsible."Then he bowed to my father. "Mr. Shaw, please calm down. I will give

The dean pushed his way straight into the center of the crowd. The moment he saw the bruises on my face and arms, his expression changed instantly."Who did this?"His voice was shaking. He looked like he was about to pass out.Tara, who had been holding her composure right up until now, broke. The color went out of her face. Her voice came out small."It's nothing serious, sir. Why would you, why are you here yourself..."Before the dean could answer, Cassidy and Holly elbowed forward to spin the story.Cassidy threw her chest out, voice loud. "Dean, if we hadn't been watching out for Tara, Sophia would've bullied her to death!"Holly shot me a sideways glance and added with a mocking tone, "Exactly. She stays out all night fooling around with men outside, and now she's even doing it on campus. She's ruining the school's reputation!"The dorm supervisor nodded quickly from the side. "That's right, I can testify. She's always been arrogant and difficult!""Tara is such a kind
