Chapter 1 The Girl in the Photographs

Author: Amber Fleck
Instantly, an uproar erupted throughout the courtroom.

Tristan Hodges went deathly pale. His knees buckled, and he nearly slid off his seat and collapsed onto the floor.

The presiding judge hurriedly brought down the gavel. "Court is adjourned! This case is being referred to the police for further investigation!"

Bailiffs rushed forward and restrained me.

As they escorted me away, camera flashes erupted from every direction. The victims' families broke down in hysterics, their anguished cries filling the air. Rotten eggs and chunks of stone flew over the security barrier, striking me in the head and body.

A shard of stone split the skin at my temple, and blood trickled down my face. Yet my eyes remained fixed on Tristan. Watching the despair on his face, as though his very soul had been ripped from his body, I finally let out a laugh of pure satisfaction.

…

I was taken back into custody and returned to the detention center.

In the interrogation room, Justin Creed, the captain of the criminal investigation team, sat opposite me. His imposing presence filled the room.

"Where is Edith Rayburne?"

I leaned back in my chair. "Bring Tristan Hodges here. I want to tell him myself."

"Not going to happen." Justin rejected my request outright. "He's the victim's fiance. He has to recuse himself from this case. From what I've gathered, Judge Hodges was once your husband, and the victim was your close friend of many years. Did their relationship make you jealous and drive you to murder out of romantic resentment?"

I did not answer. I simply looked at him.

Justin seemed to think he would find a way to break through my defenses. He tossed a stack of photographs onto the table. They were pictures of Edith and me as teenagers, back when we were still in school.

In the top photograph, I wore a radiant smile, while Edith stood timidly behind me, her gaze hesitant.

"This was taken when you first started middle school, wasn't it? According to our interviews, you and Edith met in elementary school and were as close as sisters. You went on to attend the same boarding school. You'd been spoiled since childhood and couldn't manage anything without Edith, who had always been independent and self-reliant.

"She washed your clothes and bought your meals. She even gave up the opportunity to attend a top university. Your SAT scores were only good enough to get you into an average university, so she voluntarily changed her college preferences just to stay by your side and continue taking care of you."

I let out a cold laugh but did not bother to refute him.

Justin continued, "While you were in college, Edith and Judge Hodges were in the same major. She was his junior, which was how you came to know him. Three years after graduation, you married him. After the wedding, you grew jealous whenever Edith had any contact with your husband, and you repeatedly fought with both of them over it.

"The last incident happened six years ago. Edith wanted to reconcile with you, but during your conversation, you took advantage of her drunken state and set a fire. Fortunately, Judge Hodges discovered it in time, or Edith might have died.

"You fled to avoid prosecution and remained on the run for six whole years. And you didn't change your ways. Instead, you used a variety of cruel methods to take the lives of five innocent people!"

Justin slammed his palm against the table, his eyes bloodshot with fury. The impact sent the photographs scattering to the floor, where they landed at my feet.

"Sabrina Westbrook! After going on the run, you changed your name to Hope Westbrook. You thought you were drowning in a sea of suffering, and this was how you intended to save yourself? By murdering people? Do you even realize that Edith never pressed charges against you for trying to kill her back then?

"She and Judge Hodges have been searching for you all these years. Even his decision to file for divorce was an attempt to draw you out of hiding. And after years of searching without finding you, he finally considered marrying Edith because he wanted to make amends for the wrongs you'd committed. He wanted to atone for your sins!"

I finally could not hold back my laughter. "Didn't press charges, you say? Wanted to atone for my sins?"

I raised a hand and wiped away the tears of laughter gathering at the corners of my eyes. "I honestly never imagined someone could cheat on their wife and still come up with a story like that. This is a whole new level of shamelessness."

Justin clearly was not pleased with my reaction. He leaned closer to me. "If things between them were really as you suspected, why did they wait six years after you disappeared to get married?

"Even these photographs were carefully preserved by Edith herself. The sincere affection she held onto from her girlhood has now become evidence used to accuse the very woman suspected of murdering her! Sabrina Westbrook, do you have any conscience at all? Doesn't it hurt?"

As I stared at the two smiling faces on the floor, my eyes reddened.

Realizing that his words had struck a nerve, Justin softened his tone. "Sabrina, tell me where Edith is. At least let her rest in peace."

"Rest in peace?" I lifted my gaze and looked at the one-way mirror opposite me, my lips curling into an ambiguous smile. "Tell me something, Tristan. Does a woman who lies through her teeth deserve to rest in peace?"

When Justin escorted me back to the police station for the last time, he finally could not hold back anymore. "Sabrina, I'm sorry for accusing you of killing Edith out of love in the early stages of the investigation."I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Maybe Tristan overestimated how important he was to me, too."What I had not expected was that Tristan would actually request a visit. When I saw him through the glass again, his hands trembled so badly that he could barely hold the receiver."Sabrina? Sabrina, I'm sorry…" He cried like a child. "I didn't know. I had no idea you'd been through all that. Back then, there really was nothing between Edith and me. I'd met her first, but you were the one I fell in love with. You've always been the only one in my heart, Sabrina. She deceived me from the start. She made up all those tragic stories about her past to win my sympathy."I only got together with her because my sense of justice made me want to avenge what she'd suffered at

Edith struggled to get up, but I kicked her and the chair out from under her, sending them both crashing to the ground. It was the exact same position she had been in when I had first met her."Edith, the day you ran over my mother was your birthday. Did you know that even if you hadn't asked her to meet you that day, she would've come looking for you three days later? Because three days after that was the day you first came to my home. It was the birthday of your second life. The day you received that offer from the company overseas, I was even happier than you were. I told my parents about it before you did."That day, you asked my mother whether she'd rather have a capable, accomplished daughter who couldn't stay by her side or a daughter who stayed with her but never achieved much. My mother said, 'My Sabrina can do whatever she wants.' "But she hadn't finished speaking."Back then, she'd wanted to send me abroad. I gave up that opportunity and stayed in the country for your

A strangled sound escaped my throat. "What did you say?"Edith lifted my chin and enunciated every word. "Your family took me in and raised me for 13 years, so I ran over her 13 times. On the very road you took to bring me into the city."Sabrina, did you think taking me away from the village made you some kind of saint? You were just lucky enough to be born with advantages I never had. I was already unlucky enough to be born into the wrong family."Writing letters to contact you, luring you into the village, getting my mother to beat me—all of it was my attempt to change my fate! Everything I have today, from day one, I earned through my own efforts! Why should I owe you anything? My mother didn't love me because I wasn't a boy. "Meanwhile, your mother loved you even when you did absolutely nothing. I met every condition for being loved, so Tristan cheated on you. Your parents refused to accept me, so they deserved to die!"She flung a letter of forgiveness at my face. In the bo

My mother had died in a car accident six years earlier. The collision had occurred on an undeveloped stretch of road that was not yet covered by surveillance cameras. However, witness testimonies, footage recovered from the dashcam of the vehicle involved provided by the dealership, and the traffic police's examination of the tire tracks at the scene had all established that my mother was entirely at fault. The driver of the other vehicle had been Edith. My father had signed a letter of forgiveness, waiving any further claims against her, and had died of a sudden cerebral infarction later that same year. My ex-husband, Tristan, had handled all the funeral arrangements.Everyone involved had kept these events from me on the grounds that I was pregnant and could not afford any emotional distress. Without knowing it, I would become an orphan, spending my days nourishing my enemy's child with my own flesh and blood, eagerly awaiting its arrival with boundless anticipation.Justin fel

Five seconds later, the surveillance monitor abruptly went black. All the color drained from Justin's face. "That wasn't surveillance footage. It was a prerecorded video…"I laughed. "I never said it was surveillance footage."A fist came flying at my face, knocking me clean off my feet. One of my canine teeth landed on the floor in front of me, and the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.Tristan grabbed me by the collar and hauled me off the ground. "Where the hell is Edith? What did you do to her?"I quietly studied the man who had once shared my bed, my ex-husband, who was now shedding tears for another woman. "Didn't you just see Edith yourselves? You were the ones who failed to recognize her. So, why are you yelling at me now?"Justin's expression darkened. "We saw her? Where?"I lazily pointed in the direction they had come from. "Beacon Bridge. The entire bridge was Edith. You spent ten minutes passing over her, yet you walked away without even looking back."My ans

What followed was no longer Sabrina Westbrook's story. It was Hope Westbrook's.Justin grabbed me by the collar. "Where are Rayburne's remains? Westbrook, your crimes have already been established. Stop putting up pointless resistance."I looked at him with an almost amused smile. "But I genuinely don't know where Edith's remains are. All I know is where the living Edith is."Everyone present widened their eyes in shock. "Edith Rayburne is still alive?"Tristan dropped to his knees, tears and snot streaming down his face. "Thank God. Thank God!"Justin remained suspicious. "Are you just trying to buy time? From what I've gathered, Edith had no social or personal connections with the other five victims. You still haven't explained why you killed those five people."I raised my shackled hands. "How much time could a death-row inmate possibly have left? You're wasting time. If you keep dragging this out, Edith might not have much time left herself."Justin immediately tensed.Five
