Chapter 3 The Betrayal Behind Closed Doors

Author: Amber Fleck
Not long after Tristan Hodges and I got married, he began smiling at his phone more and more often. Whenever he was around me, he would even instinctively turn his phone face down. And whenever he came home late after working overtime, his shirts invariably carried the scent of unfamiliar perfume.

Whenever I confronted him, he would offer an impatient explanation. "I'm smiling because someone in the group chat said something funny. Turning my phone facedown is just a professional habit. And as for the perfume, what am I supposed to do when a female client puts it on? Tell her to stop because my wife might get the wrong idea?"

Still suspicious, I sought out Edith and confided in her.

Edith leaned close to my ear and whispered, "The next time you find a clue, don't confront him. Investigate directly instead. Don't give him a chance to come up with excuses."

It did not take long for an opportunity to present itself.

Tristan suddenly announced that he had to go on a business trip. In the photo he sent as proof of his whereabouts, I spotted the reflection of a woman's silhouette in the glass window.

Edith was not answering her phone, so I gathered some other friends and rushed to the hotel. We forced the door open and found Tristan kneeling halfway on the floor, cradling a woman's bare left leg in his hands.

The woman, to my dismay, was Edith.

The moment he noticed the camera in my friend's hand, his expression changed completely. "Sabrina, have you lost your mind?"

My teeth chattered so violently that I could barely speak. "What are you two doing together?"

Tristan finally lost his temper. He slapped the phone out of my friend's stunned, outstretched hand.

"Edith and I studied the same subject. I brought her along because she wanted to sit in on a case discussion. She came to discuss some details with me and twisted her ankle. I was simply checking her injury! What the hell is wrong with you?"

But the perfume he had claimed belonged to a female client was exactly the same fragrance Edith wore.

I strode straight toward him and snatched his phone away. Edith was the only person pinned to the top of his chat list.

When I opened their conversation, I discovered that the two of them exchanged more messages in a single day than Tristan and I had exchanged in six months combined.

My blood rushed to my head, and a chill swept through my entire body. "So this is what you meant by group messages, professional habits, and female clients? Tristan Hodges, if you have nothing to hide, why have you been keeping all this from me?"

"Enough!" Tristan looked at me as though I had broken his heart. "Sabrina, look at yourself! What have you become?"

He threw two hotel key cards down in front of me. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want you jumping to conclusions and accusing Edith unfairly! Everyone knows how well she's treated you since childhood. How dare you brand her a homewrecker?"

At the sight of the two key cards, even the friends who had initially taken my side began whispering among themselves. "Sabrina, maybe things really aren't what you think they are…"

Edith immediately dropped to her knees in front of me. "I'm sorry, Sabrina. I shouldn't have handled things this way. Please, don't fight because of me!"

I did not miss the fleeting smile that crossed her face.

By the time I came to my senses, my hand had already struck her across the face. "Edith Rayburne, I treated you like my own sister, and this is how you repay me? You schemed against me?"

The next instant, a far more vicious slap sent me sprawling to the floor.

"You claim to treat Edith like your own sister, yet you've been ordering her around since childhood! You even made her give up her chance to attend a top law school just so she could go to an inferior one and look after you! Sabrina, how dare you play the victim?"

The metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.

"How dare I? Without me, her mother would've sold her off to some remote mountain village long ago! Edith Rayburne, my parents paid 20 thousand dollars to rescue you from that living hell. Yes, you got into law school, but your parents took your scholarship money! You begged me to help you figure out what to do.

"That same year, my family went bankrupt. Law school tuition was exorbitant, and even after I split the money my parents had left me for studying abroad with you, it still wasn't enough. You had no choice but to apply to the same university as me because its tuition was more affordable. And after everything that happened, this is the story you chose to tell about me?"

The room fell silent, leaving only Edith's sobs.

Tristan's expression darkened as he stepped in front of Edith to shield her. "If you were really as kind as you claim, you wouldn't have exposed Edith's private struggles in front of everyone."

He helped Edith to her feet and walked away with her without looking back.

When Justin escorted me back to the police station for the last time, he finally could not hold back anymore. "Sabrina, I'm sorry for accusing you of killing Edith out of love in the early stages of the investigation."I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Maybe Tristan overestimated how important he was to me, too."What I had not expected was that Tristan would actually request a visit. When I saw him through the glass again, his hands trembled so badly that he could barely hold the receiver."Sabrina? Sabrina, I'm sorry…" He cried like a child. "I didn't know. I had no idea you'd been through all that. Back then, there really was nothing between Edith and me. I'd met her first, but you were the one I fell in love with. You've always been the only one in my heart, Sabrina. She deceived me from the start. She made up all those tragic stories about her past to win my sympathy."I only got together with her because my sense of justice made me want to avenge what she'd suffered at

Edith struggled to get up, but I kicked her and the chair out from under her, sending them both crashing to the ground. It was the exact same position she had been in when I had first met her."Edith, the day you ran over my mother was your birthday. Did you know that even if you hadn't asked her to meet you that day, she would've come looking for you three days later? Because three days after that was the day you first came to my home. It was the birthday of your second life. The day you received that offer from the company overseas, I was even happier than you were. I told my parents about it before you did."That day, you asked my mother whether she'd rather have a capable, accomplished daughter who couldn't stay by her side or a daughter who stayed with her but never achieved much. My mother said, 'My Sabrina can do whatever she wants.' "But she hadn't finished speaking."Back then, she'd wanted to send me abroad. I gave up that opportunity and stayed in the country for your

A strangled sound escaped my throat. "What did you say?"Edith lifted my chin and enunciated every word. "Your family took me in and raised me for 13 years, so I ran over her 13 times. On the very road you took to bring me into the city."Sabrina, did you think taking me away from the village made you some kind of saint? You were just lucky enough to be born with advantages I never had. I was already unlucky enough to be born into the wrong family."Writing letters to contact you, luring you into the village, getting my mother to beat me—all of it was my attempt to change my fate! Everything I have today, from day one, I earned through my own efforts! Why should I owe you anything? My mother didn't love me because I wasn't a boy. "Meanwhile, your mother loved you even when you did absolutely nothing. I met every condition for being loved, so Tristan cheated on you. Your parents refused to accept me, so they deserved to die!"She flung a letter of forgiveness at my face. In the bo

My mother had died in a car accident six years earlier. The collision had occurred on an undeveloped stretch of road that was not yet covered by surveillance cameras. However, witness testimonies, footage recovered from the dashcam of the vehicle involved provided by the dealership, and the traffic police's examination of the tire tracks at the scene had all established that my mother was entirely at fault. The driver of the other vehicle had been Edith. My father had signed a letter of forgiveness, waiving any further claims against her, and had died of a sudden cerebral infarction later that same year. My ex-husband, Tristan, had handled all the funeral arrangements.Everyone involved had kept these events from me on the grounds that I was pregnant and could not afford any emotional distress. Without knowing it, I would become an orphan, spending my days nourishing my enemy's child with my own flesh and blood, eagerly awaiting its arrival with boundless anticipation.Justin fel

Five seconds later, the surveillance monitor abruptly went black. All the color drained from Justin's face. "That wasn't surveillance footage. It was a prerecorded video…"I laughed. "I never said it was surveillance footage."A fist came flying at my face, knocking me clean off my feet. One of my canine teeth landed on the floor in front of me, and the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.Tristan grabbed me by the collar and hauled me off the ground. "Where the hell is Edith? What did you do to her?"I quietly studied the man who had once shared my bed, my ex-husband, who was now shedding tears for another woman. "Didn't you just see Edith yourselves? You were the ones who failed to recognize her. So, why are you yelling at me now?"Justin's expression darkened. "We saw her? Where?"I lazily pointed in the direction they had come from. "Beacon Bridge. The entire bridge was Edith. You spent ten minutes passing over her, yet you walked away without even looking back."My ans

What followed was no longer Sabrina Westbrook's story. It was Hope Westbrook's.Justin grabbed me by the collar. "Where are Rayburne's remains? Westbrook, your crimes have already been established. Stop putting up pointless resistance."I looked at him with an almost amused smile. "But I genuinely don't know where Edith's remains are. All I know is where the living Edith is."Everyone present widened their eyes in shock. "Edith Rayburne is still alive?"Tristan dropped to his knees, tears and snot streaming down his face. "Thank God. Thank God!"Justin remained suspicious. "Are you just trying to buy time? From what I've gathered, Edith had no social or personal connections with the other five victims. You still haven't explained why you killed those five people."I raised my shackled hands. "How much time could a death-row inmate possibly have left? You're wasting time. If you keep dragging this out, Edith might not have much time left herself."Justin immediately tensed.Five
