Chapter 4 Whose Ashes Were They?

Author: Amber Fleck
My friends left with them too.

Left alone in the room, I finally succumbed to the overwhelming shock and collapsed.

…

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

Tristan was leaning over beside me, holding my hand tightly. The moment he felt me move, he jerked his head up. "Sabrina, you're awake…"

He gently rubbed the back of my hand, his voice hoarse. "I went too far with what I said at the hotel yesterday. I'm sorry. The doctor told me you're pregnant, so you need to keep your emotions in check. Edith and I were wrong about some things, too, but there's really nothing going on between us."

He took out a photograph I had treasured for years. In it, Edith and I were young, smiling innocently at the camera.

"Your friendship is precious, too. You shouldn't let a little misunderstanding drive you to suspect each other. She wants to apologize to you as well. She'll come over tomorrow, and I'll make sure I'm not here. Would you be willing to see her?"

Looking at Edith's smiling face in the photograph, I closed my eyes and let out a long, deep breath.

I remembered how my mother had taught me when I was little that I should not expect people trapped in desperate circumstances to uphold their moral principles.

Ultimately, I nodded.

…

The next day, Edith arrived at my house carrying a meal she had prepared with all my favorite dishes.

Tristan did not leave until he saw me eat. "You two take your time and talk things through."

After Tristan's car had disappeared into the distance, she suddenly smiled. "Sabrina, do you know what I hate most about you? That sanctimonious act of yours. You obviously hate me to the point of wanting me dead, yet you still pretend to be magnanimous. Doesn't that make you sick?"

I put down my cutlery. "What are you talking about?"

My body trembled uncontrollably, but I still forced myself to appear calm.

"I won't fall for the same trick twice."

Then, I heard a man's voice say, "I specialize in divorce cases. A failed marriage would damage my reputation, so you'll just have to put up with this for now. As compensation, I replaced the eggs Sabrina used for IVF with yours."

To protect Tristan's pride, I had never told anyone about undergoing IVF.

I wanted to confront her, but I could not even lift my hands.

'The food was poisoned!'

Edith's smile deepened as she saw the horror on my face. She struck a match and held the tiny flame between her fingers. "Sabrina, tell me. If a fire broke out, who would Tristan save?"

I struggled to remain composed. "If you want Tristan, I can give him to you."

Edith's slap cut me off.

"Give him to me? The way you talk is as disgusting as ever. You claim to treat me like your own sister. You helped me go to college. Now you're offering to give me your man. Sabrina Westbrook, who do you think you are? You're nothing but a lucky woman born with a silver spoon! What makes you think you're better than me? How dare you talk to me like that?"

The flames illuminated Edith's twisted face.

For the first time in 13 years, I finally saw her for who she really was.

"This world is all about survival of the fittest. A fool like you deserves to be eliminated." As she spoke, she dialed Tristan's number right in front of me. "Tristan, Sabrina started a fire! She's trying to burn me alive!"

In the final moments before the flames consumed me, Edith was rescued, nestled in Tristan's arms. The ceiling beams collapsed, and with that, my account of what had happened came to an end.

…

I looked at Justin. "All I did to Edith was return everything she'd done to me."

Justin shot to his feet. "Identify and search the former residence shared by Sabrina Westbrook and Tristan Hodges. Edith Rayburne's remains are most likely there."

After a search, the police quickly discovered a container of a woman's ashes.

In the visitation room, Tristan stood on the other side of the glass, screaming at me through his tears. "Edith did wrong, but you could've used the law to bring her to justice! Why did you have to resort to such extreme measures?"

"If I'd died in that fire, how could I have taken her to court?" I regarded him evenly. "Are you crying because you feel sorry that I'll face legal punishment, or because Edith lost her life?"

Tristan froze.

The next second, Justin burst through the door. "Those ashes don't belong to Edith Rayburne. Sabrina Westbrook, you've been playing us for fools!"

I smiled. "I never said they were her ashes. They belonged to my mother. If my feud with Edith had been as simple as that fire, why would I have killed five people?"

When Justin escorted me back to the police station for the last time, he finally could not hold back anymore. "Sabrina, I'm sorry for accusing you of killing Edith out of love in the early stages of the investigation."I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Maybe Tristan overestimated how important he was to me, too."What I had not expected was that Tristan would actually request a visit. When I saw him through the glass again, his hands trembled so badly that he could barely hold the receiver."Sabrina? Sabrina, I'm sorry…" He cried like a child. "I didn't know. I had no idea you'd been through all that. Back then, there really was nothing between Edith and me. I'd met her first, but you were the one I fell in love with. You've always been the only one in my heart, Sabrina. She deceived me from the start. She made up all those tragic stories about her past to win my sympathy."I only got together with her because my sense of justice made me want to avenge what she'd suffered at

Edith struggled to get up, but I kicked her and the chair out from under her, sending them both crashing to the ground. It was the exact same position she had been in when I had first met her."Edith, the day you ran over my mother was your birthday. Did you know that even if you hadn't asked her to meet you that day, she would've come looking for you three days later? Because three days after that was the day you first came to my home. It was the birthday of your second life. The day you received that offer from the company overseas, I was even happier than you were. I told my parents about it before you did."That day, you asked my mother whether she'd rather have a capable, accomplished daughter who couldn't stay by her side or a daughter who stayed with her but never achieved much. My mother said, 'My Sabrina can do whatever she wants.' "But she hadn't finished speaking."Back then, she'd wanted to send me abroad. I gave up that opportunity and stayed in the country for your

A strangled sound escaped my throat. "What did you say?"Edith lifted my chin and enunciated every word. "Your family took me in and raised me for 13 years, so I ran over her 13 times. On the very road you took to bring me into the city."Sabrina, did you think taking me away from the village made you some kind of saint? You were just lucky enough to be born with advantages I never had. I was already unlucky enough to be born into the wrong family."Writing letters to contact you, luring you into the village, getting my mother to beat me—all of it was my attempt to change my fate! Everything I have today, from day one, I earned through my own efforts! Why should I owe you anything? My mother didn't love me because I wasn't a boy. "Meanwhile, your mother loved you even when you did absolutely nothing. I met every condition for being loved, so Tristan cheated on you. Your parents refused to accept me, so they deserved to die!"She flung a letter of forgiveness at my face. In the bo

My mother had died in a car accident six years earlier. The collision had occurred on an undeveloped stretch of road that was not yet covered by surveillance cameras. However, witness testimonies, footage recovered from the dashcam of the vehicle involved provided by the dealership, and the traffic police's examination of the tire tracks at the scene had all established that my mother was entirely at fault. The driver of the other vehicle had been Edith. My father had signed a letter of forgiveness, waiving any further claims against her, and had died of a sudden cerebral infarction later that same year. My ex-husband, Tristan, had handled all the funeral arrangements.Everyone involved had kept these events from me on the grounds that I was pregnant and could not afford any emotional distress. Without knowing it, I would become an orphan, spending my days nourishing my enemy's child with my own flesh and blood, eagerly awaiting its arrival with boundless anticipation.Justin fel

Five seconds later, the surveillance monitor abruptly went black. All the color drained from Justin's face. "That wasn't surveillance footage. It was a prerecorded video…"I laughed. "I never said it was surveillance footage."A fist came flying at my face, knocking me clean off my feet. One of my canine teeth landed on the floor in front of me, and the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.Tristan grabbed me by the collar and hauled me off the ground. "Where the hell is Edith? What did you do to her?"I quietly studied the man who had once shared my bed, my ex-husband, who was now shedding tears for another woman. "Didn't you just see Edith yourselves? You were the ones who failed to recognize her. So, why are you yelling at me now?"Justin's expression darkened. "We saw her? Where?"I lazily pointed in the direction they had come from. "Beacon Bridge. The entire bridge was Edith. You spent ten minutes passing over her, yet you walked away without even looking back."My ans

What followed was no longer Sabrina Westbrook's story. It was Hope Westbrook's.Justin grabbed me by the collar. "Where are Rayburne's remains? Westbrook, your crimes have already been established. Stop putting up pointless resistance."I looked at him with an almost amused smile. "But I genuinely don't know where Edith's remains are. All I know is where the living Edith is."Everyone present widened their eyes in shock. "Edith Rayburne is still alive?"Tristan dropped to his knees, tears and snot streaming down his face. "Thank God. Thank God!"Justin remained suspicious. "Are you just trying to buy time? From what I've gathered, Edith had no social or personal connections with the other five victims. You still haven't explained why you killed those five people."I raised my shackled hands. "How much time could a death-row inmate possibly have left? You're wasting time. If you keep dragging this out, Edith might not have much time left herself."Justin immediately tensed.Five
