Maxwell could hear Shirley tossing and turning about on her bed. Guilt washed over him as he listened from the his room which was across hers. Shirley had been right, it was her father that had put him up to propose to her but he hadn't used anything against him like she had thought, not exactly. He had only revealed something about her to him and proposing to her had been the only way he could think of to protect her. A soft knock on Shirley's door made her jerk up. She sniffed, trying to push back the tears gathering in her eyes, and then she grabbed a tissue to wipe the tears off her face but it was already too late, her makeup was already ruined. Monique stepped in with a tray containing a glass of juice. She took one look at Shirley's face and gasped, placing the tray on the dressing table and moving to her. "Are you okay? What happened to your makeup?" she asked even though the redness of Shirley's eyes told it all. The tears kept flooding Shirley's eyes as she drove, making her vision of the road blurry. She was driving beyond the speed limit and it was even a surprise that the police had not pulled her car over yet. She was driving through a one-way highway. After taking a warm bath, Shirley moved to the mirror in the bathroom and just stared at her reflection. She had noticed as she drove from the accident site that her sense seemed to be heightened, especially her sense of hearing but she had just dismissed it as her nerves at work.
