Maxwell could hear Shirley tossing and turning about on her bed. Guilt washed over him as he listened from the his room which was across hers. Shirley had been right, it was her father that had put him up to propose to her but he hadn't used anything against him like she had thought, not exactly. A soft knock on Shirley's door made her jerk up. She sniffed, trying to push back the tears gathering in her eyes, and then she grabbed a tissue to wipe the tears off her face but it was already too late, her makeup was already ruined.
