Chapter 3 The Love That Was Never Real

Penulis: Cherry Lane
The boy, who looked about four years old, stood protectively in front of Caspian, glaring at me with his puffed-out cheeks.

I endured the pain and slowly got to my feet. Trembling, I reached toward him. "I'm your—"

"Shut up!" Caspian slapped my hand away. He picked up the boy and placed him in Tia's arms before looking at me, visibly irritated.

"Lydia, I had everything arranged. I left you a daughter and enough property. Just pretend I'm dead. Forget what happened today and let it go, alright?"

I stared at him as he stood protectively in front of Tia, holding the son I had given birth to.

My heart plummeted, and my entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.

In the six years I had known Caspian, I had never seen this side of him.

For the two years after my parents died, I had tried constantly to atone for what I believed I owed them. I even developed severe depression. Just when I felt I couldn't hold on any longer, Caspian, who worked as a psychologist, patiently talked me through it.

He knew all my pain.

Even when I broke down in the middle of the night and ran to the mountains intending to end my life, he had always been the first to find me and pull me into his arms.

"Lydia, don't be afraid. Even if the whole world gives up on you, I never will."

Caspian had used his gentleness and devotion to pull me out of the abyss. Then, he proposed to me.

After we got married, I became pregnant with our first child.

He had been so excited that he picked me up and spun me around. That same day, he bought prenatal education books and ordered a crib.

He had told me, "Lydia, this is our first child. Even before they're born, I want them to feel how much we love them."

But the day our child was born, I suffered complications during labor.

When I woke up, Caspian was clutching my hand, his eyes swollen and red. "Lydia, no child will ever be more important to me than you. You're the most important person in my life. Let's forget about the baby."

Then, he held me in his arms and sobbed.

I knew he had only been trying to comfort me—a man who had burst into tears just from looking at our baby's ultrasound scans could not have loved his child.

So, after spending six months recovering, I tried to conceive again. After multiple failed attempts, I finally decided to undergo IVF.

Whenever he saw the bruises covering my stomach from all the injections, the pain in his eyes did not go away.

Even when he was away on business and we spoke over video calls, he would still talk about the beautiful future he envisioned for our little family.

I'd never imagined that every bit of kindness he'd shown me had actually been meant to fulfill Tia's wish for happiness.

"Lydia, I know I owe you an apology, but Caspian and I have been legally married for a long time."

I jerked my head up and met the barely concealed smugness in Tia's eyes.

She spoke as though she were trying to reason with me, but every word pierced me like a knife.

"Now that you know the truth, if you keep clinging to him, people will call you a homewrecker. Besides, my son is very attached to me. You can't take him away."

When I returned to the Salisbury family, Tia had already been sent away, and I didn't meet Caspian until two years later.

So, I had never known that she and Caspian had met, nor had I noticed that after building a family with me, he had maintained another family of his own.

But the way she kept calling me a homewrecker and referring to my son as hers finally shattered the last of the sanity I had desperately tried to hold on to.

"I'm not a homewrecker, and that's my son! I gave birth to him! You stole him from me! I'm not leaving him with any of you!" I lunged forward like a madwoman, trying to take my son back.

But I had barely taken two steps when a powerful hand clamped down on my shoulder.

Before I could even see who it was, a heavy slap landed across my face.

The taste of blood spread rapidly through my mouth.

I covered my cheek and looked up at Ian's livid face.

His eyes were icy as he accused me, "Because of you, Tia can't have children anymore. The least you can do is give her a child! And you have no right to refuse!"

Ethan and Wendy supported me greatly. They even managed to get a paternity test done for my son. When the report confirmed our relationship, tears of excitement filled my eyes. "That's wonderful. Both of my children are alive and well."Wendy was just as emotional. "Lydia, whatever you do, don't back down. If they refuse to give you your son, we'll hire the best lawyer we can find and get them back through the courts. Public opinion is on your side now, and we'll all support you.""Thank you."The people I had cared about most—my family and my husband—had hurt and deceived me. The people who had helped me, however, were a private investigator I'd met by chance and countless kindhearted strangers online.I had my lawyer contact Caspian and informed him that I was prepared to take the matter to court if he refused to give me custody of our son. To my surprise, after speaking with my lawyer, he agreed to let me raise him. However, he had one condition. He wanted to see me in per

I was confused. My heart had already been battered beyond what it could take. Afraid that something else might go wrong, I went to the hospital myself. The doctor who had performed my IVF procedure spoke with unwavering certainty. "Our hospital has strict protocols in place. There is absolutely no way we could have mixed up a patient's embryos, let alone deliberately switched them."After questioning the doctor in detail, I discovered Tia had never switched my embryos at all. The daughter I had given birth to was my own child, and all that Tia had said was just to provoke me. But she did tell one truth—the child who had been with me at the postpartum care center really was her niece. After investigating the matter for me, Ethan explained, "You and Tia's sister-in-law gave birth around the same time. "Back then, to make the switch easier, Tia covered all her sister-in-law's hospital expenses herself. After the babies were born, she bribed a nurse to switch them."He didn't

Tapping into a random video, I soon realized it had over 2,000 comments. Many had left lengthy paragraphs condemning what had happened."The nerve she has to teach people that! This is just another kind of scam! They fabricated an identity and had her boyfriend trick another innocent woman into giving birth to his child. "Then, he faked his own death and walked away, leaving the woman who knew nothing behind to drown in grief. Just thinking about it is horrifying!""The worst part is that the woman's husband was fake, and his two biological brothers were involved too. Everyone around her was lying to her. My heart hurts just thinking about what she went through.""That poor woman thought she had finally found happiness. If she found out her marriage certificate was fake and she had unknowingly become a homewrecker, how devastating would that be?""A homewrecker is the one who knowingly wrecks someone else's family. Someone who knows nothing is a victim!""I really hope that wo

"Jon, whatever happens to Ian and Caspian has nothing to do with me," I interrupted him, my voice flat. "And that includes you. You never thought much of me anyway. Even if I go over, all I'd get is contempt—tell me I'm wrong."He began scolding me through the phone. "Excuse me, Lydia Salisbury! I'm talking about a dire situation. This isn't the time for you to throw a tantrum. "Do you have any idea what happened? Someone dug up what Ian and Caspian did, and it shot straight to the top of the trending searches. "They didn't have their bodyguards with them, and the moment they walked out of the hospital, they were surrounded and brutally beaten.""Who cares?" My voice remained flat, utterly devoid of warmth.Jon paused for two seconds before his voice suddenly rose. "Obviously, you need to check the trending searches and put out a clarification immediately. Just say all of this was a prank. Say you made the whole thing up for publicity, that it was a you fabricated yoursel

Jon's expression was just as cold as he added, "Ian and I had everything planned. Once you accepted the reality that Caspian was dead, we were going to forgive you and treat you well. "I can't believe you found this place and ruined everything!"Tears blurred my vision. I struggled to turn toward Caspian, only to hear him say, "Lydia, from the moment you heard that I'd died, whatever bond existed between us ended. "And all the grievances and debts there were between the four of us have been settled."Then, his voice turned threatening. "If you keep kicking up a fuss, I'll take our daughter away too."At that, he ordered his bodyguards to go to the postpartum care center and bring our daughter away.I'd gone through hell to give birth to her—I couldn't lose her.I knew Caspian could very well do it, and Ian and Jon would help him. I hurried forward to stop him, my voice trembling with panic and tears. "I'll stop. I'll go. Please, don't take our daughter away."I glanced at
