Chapter 2

Author: River Snapshot
I clenched my fists, pushed the door open, and walked in. The room instantly went quiet. Everyone turned to look at me, their eyes filled with contempt.

I took a deep breath and said to Alison, “Thank you for the wonderful meal. I should get going.”

Tate was the first to step forward and grab my hand. “Lily…”

Lucas took two steps toward me but stopped dead in his tracks the next second. He looked like he wanted to say something, but he said nothing in the end. After all, to him, family always came first.

I pulled my hand out of Tate’s grip and walked out the front door without looking back. Just then, my phone screen lit up. It was a friend of mine from a multinational corporation.

“Lily, my boss is very happy with your resume. When can you start?”

“Three days from now.”

Right after that, Lucas sent me the location pin of a hotel.

[Lily, check into a hotel for the night. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.]

Then, Tate sent a voice message. “Lily, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think things would turn out like this. Let me talk to Alison and smooth things over for you.”

I ignored both messages and booked a different hotel for myself. Once I got into the car, the tears I had held back all evening finally fell.

When Lucas and I first started dating, Alison had been so good to me. On every video call, she would invite me over for dinner. She also remembered my preferences and my allergies.

Whenever Lucas and I fought, she would always take my side. For someone like me, who had never experienced my parents’ love growing up, this felt extremely heartwarming.

Later on, Lucas brought me home to meet his mother, and I brought Tate along. We had grown up together in the orphanage, and she was my best friend. On such an important day, I wanted her there with me.

Right before we walked through the door, Tate had even comforted me, saying, “Lily, don’t be nervous. I'm your family.”

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that the moment we stepped inside, Alison would walk past me, grab Tate’s hand, and call her a family. No matter how many times I tried to explain that I was his actual girlfriend, as soon as her perception was challenged, she had an emotional breakdown.

Remembering how kind Alison used to be to me, out of fear of triggering her episode, I had no choice but to allow Lucas and Tate to pretend to be a couple. And now, Tate had become a permanent part of their family while I had been reduced to an extra.

As soon as I got to the hotel, Lucas sent another message.

[Did you get there? Answer me.]

He was worried about me, yet he couldn’t even bring himself to make a phone call.

I looked down and replied, [I booked my own hotel. I need to get back to work.]

He didn’t ask any further questions or offer any extra explanation.

[Alright, I’ll come pick you up tomorrow morning.]

The night outside was ablaze with lights. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the bright fireworks in the distance. It looked so lively.

Lucas updated his Instagram feed with a new video. In the video, he was holding Tate’s hand as they lit fireworks together.

With a loud whoosh, a firework shot up into the sky. Tate ducked playfully into his arms, and he cupped his hands over her ears to block the sound. In the split second they locked eyes, the brilliant sparks of the fireworks reflected in their gazes, making them look exactly like a real couple.

The caption read, “For the rest of my life, I will be right by your side.”

It was romantic and beautiful.

I stared at those words and laughed bitterly because Lucas had once said those exact words to me during the New Year after we started working.

Lucas hadn’t gone home, choosing instead to stay behind in our rented apartment to ring in the New Year with me. In the final seconds of the countdown, he dropped to one knee and slid a diamond ring onto my ring finger.

He kissed the back of my hand and swore, “Lily, for the rest of my life, I will be right by your side.”

That day had been the happiest moment of my life, and I believed Lucas and I would be a real family.

So, I swallowed every grievance and waited year after year. Yet, when all was said and done, all I got was his passionate declaration to Tate, and I was no longer the bride in the wedding.

The comment section beneath the video was flooded with likes and comments from friends and family.

Alison: [My gorgeous daughter-in-law.]

[When is the wedding? I can’t wait to celebrate!]

After a long silence, I liked it and left a comment. [Wishing you both happiness.]

Shortly after, both of them reached out in our trio chat, offering synchronized excuses.

[Lily, we’re just putting on an act. Don’t overthink it.]

[Lily, please don’t misunderstand. Alison took that video and forced Lucas to post it on his feed.]

However, I wasn’t a fool. The love they shared every time their eyes met couldn’t be faked.

I thought I would never see Lucas again. Unexpectedly, two years later, Lucas took on an overseas project, and the partner company happened to be the one I worked for.He often flew in on business trips to Firland, coming by my office every few days to look for me. Of course, I refused to see him every single time.As curious as they were, my colleagues kept asking me what my relationship was with him.I simply replied with an indifferent expression, “Just an ex.”A close friend of mine knew everything that had happened between Lucas and me.Sometimes, she would ask, “He came all the way here just to pursue you. Have you really never thought about getting back together?”I immediately shook my head. “Get back together? For what? For him to abandon me for his family all over again?”We looked at each other and laughed. My friend patted me on the shoulder and smiled. “Lily, you’re doing so much better now.”I didn’t say anything. She was right. Right after the breakup, I was no

The day Tate came to see me, it was raining. Having not seen each other for two months, she had lost a lot of weight and looked noticeably exhausted. We sat in the coffee shop, neither of us saying a word. It wasn’t until the coffee was served that the silence broke.Tate pushed the coffee toward me and said, “I’m sorry.”Over the years, she had apologized to me countless times, but I could tell that this was the only time she actually meant it.“Lily, I’m sorry. I know I have no right to say this.”“If you’re aware of that, then don’t say it at all.”Tate’s face turned pale, and tears spilled from her eyes the very next moment.“I admit… I did have feelings for Lucas that went beyond what they should have been. You know that, just like you, I grew up as an orphan. We both desperately longed for a family.“Even though the last three years were just an act, his mother always treated me like family, and Lucas took such good care of me. In my heart, I had long considered them my f

Lily's POVOn the other side of the world, in Firland, I had started at my new company, a foreign firm where my friend worked. The company culture was even better than I had imagined. My colleagues came from all around the world, and no one here knew anything about my past. I no longer had to worry about anyone looking at me with strange or judgmental eyes.Every day, I went to work and left on time, and as soon as I returned to my apartment, I practiced the local language. Each day was busy and fulfilling. I didn’t have any spare time to think about anything else.Yet on my fifth day at the new job, Lucas tracked me down. He was standing below my office building waiting for me, holding a bouquet of lilies—my absolute favorite—in his hands. As I walked out of the building, I bumped directly into him.“Lily,” he said, stuffing the flowers into my hands. “I’m here to take you home.”“The wedding with Tate has been canceled, and I’ve explained everything to my mom. As soon as we go

Two days later, Lucas took Tate back to his hometown. The wedding was held there, and the venue was decorated extravagantly. Alison sat in the front row, smiling from ear to ear.Lucas put on his suit and stood at the end of the aisle. As he watched Tate walk down the aisle toward him in a white wedding dress, Lily’s face filled his mind.He recalled the day he proposed to Lily. He had timed it down to the exact second. When there were two seconds left in the countdown, he got down on one knee, pulled a diamond ring from his jacket, and slipped it onto her finger. He swore he would start a family with her and spend the rest of his life by her side. She nodded repeatedly and said yes, crying tears of joy. That night, resting in his arms, she held up the diamond ring on her hand and said, “Lucas, don’t make me wait too long.”He kissed her forehead and promised that he never would. Yet, he made her wait for three whole years.Suddenly, the officiant’s voice echoed in Lucas’s ear. “

Lucas immediately panicked and kept calling her. He made several calls in a row, but every one of them went unanswered. At that moment, his heart sank. Why wasn’t she picking up? Had she run into some kind of trouble?Tate called to comfort him, saying, “Lucas, don’t panic. Lily has gone through so much, so it’s only natural for her to be angry. Let’s just give her a few days to cool off, and she’ll be fine.”Lucas didn’t say a word. He knew Tate made sense, yet an uneasy feeling lingered in his chest, growing stronger by the second. He couldn’t wait two days. With that, he barged straight into Lily’s department to look for her manager. The manager looked somewhat surprised to see him. “Mr. Karev, what brings you here?”“Give me the location Lily went to for her business trip.”The manager’s expression turned complicated. He took a resignation letter out of his desk drawer and pushed it toward Lucas.“She’s resigned.”Lucas stared at the resignation letter. Printed clearly i

Third-Person POVAfter Lily boarded her flight, Lucas stayed standing there for a very long time. It was only after watching her plane take off that he finally felt relieved enough to return to his car.Tate called him right then. “Lucas, after you drop off Lily, hurry back. Your mother is kicking up a fuss. She says she wants to see you.”He replied flatly, “Got it.”On his way back to the hospital, Lucas couldn’t help but replay the events of the past few days in his mind.On the night of the New Year’s Eve dinner, he had originally intended to get engaged to Lily and put an end to this three-year-long act. However, seeing Alison’s ardent and eager affection toward Tate, he changed his words at the last second.Lily had sat at the furthest spot from him, pouring glass after glass of wine down her throat and choking so hard that tears streamed down her face. He knew she was heartbroken, yet he couldn’t comfort her.Later on the balcony, he couldn’t stop himself from following h
