Chapter 3

Author: River Snapshot
The next morning, Lucas drove over to pick me up.

“Lily, come home with me.”

“It’s fine. Your mother doesn’t want me there.”

Instead of listening, he grabbed my wrist and forced me into the car. “Stop making a scene. Mom has forgotten all about yesterday.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “Your mother may have forgotten all about it, but I still remember.”

I couldn’t forget the disgust in her eyes when she looked at me or the dismissive words she spoke, but I couldn’t beat his stubborn persistence. Or perhaps, deep down, a tiny sliver of hope remained within me.

When we returned to the Karevs’ house, Alison was, sure enough, acting as if nothing had happened. However, she still failed to recognize who I was. When Tate introduced me as her best friend, Alison simply nodded with a smile.

At the dining table, the conversation suddenly switched to the wedding, and Alison asked if I would be Tate’s bridesmaid.

I shook my head in refusal. “I’m busy with work and won’t have the time.”

Lucas’s younger sister scoffed, “You just wish you were the bride instead.”

I froze.

Lucas, too, frowned. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

His sister pointed at me with a wounded look and said, “Yesterday I saw her on the balcony, throwing herself into your arms–”

Tate quickly chimed in to explain, “Lily is my best friend. She would never do something like that.”

Even so, Alison’s face instantly turned grim, and for the rest of the meal, she didn’t say a single word to me.

After lunch, I was just about to leave when Alison suddenly called out to me. “You’re Lily, aren’t you? Tate and Lucas are getting married soon. Didn’t your parents ever teach you to stay away from a taken man?”

Parents? I had no family.

I took a deep breath and said bitterly, “Don’t worry, Mrs. Karev. I won’t ever come back here again.”

Hearing that, Lucas stared in shock and was about to step forward, but Alison held him back. In the end, Tate walked me to the door.

“Lily, Alison was betrayed in the past, so it’s only normal that she gets triggered easily. Please don’t take it to heart.”

She was supposed to be my best friend, the one standing by my side. Yet now, even her tone mirrored that of the Karev family.

I didn’t respond. Instead, I opened an app on my phone and booked a one-way flight out of the country.

Lucas and Tate stayed in his hometown for two days. Following Alison’s wishes, they went to get their pre-wedding photos taken.

Alison even posted photos on Instagram showing Lucas accompanying Tate while she tried on wedding dresses. The gowns were gorgeous, and the two of them truly looked like a perfect match.

Tate sent me several photos, wanting me to help her pick out which dress looked best. Right after sending them, she added an explanation.

[Since our body shapes are pretty much the same, you can take this as me trying out wedding dresses for you. It’ll save you the trouble later.]

I didn’t reply to her as I used to.

When Lucas finally returned home, I was packing my luggage. Assuming I was going on another business trip, he helped me pack my clothes into the suitcase.

“How long will this trip be? When are you leaving?”

“Tomorrow.”

Lucas stopped what he was doing. “The wedding is set for three days from now. If you can’t make it… that’s actually for the best.”

I clenched my fists silently. He wanted to talk more, but Alison suddenly made a video call to discuss the wedding details with him. I instinctively stepped away, walking behind him in my sleepwear, which ended up being caught on camera.

Alison immediately panicked. “Why is Tate’s best friend at your place? Are you two together?”

Lucas quickly covered the camera. “Mom, you’re mistaken. That was Tate…”

“I refuse to believe you! Take your hand away!”

Unable to win the argument, he made up an excuse. “Mom, Lily came over to drop off some work documents. It’s not what you think.”

He then motioned for me to change out of my sleepwear. Faced with the urgency, I had no choice but to comply.

Yet, when Alison saw the dress I was wearing, she scolded me anyway, “I knew you were up to no good! Dressing like that to seduce Lucas? Just as I thought, you’re a slut–”

My suppressed emotions burst at that instant.

I snatched the phone right out of Lucas’s hand and said, “Mrs. Karev, I’m Lucas’s real girlfriend! They’ve been lying to–”

“Enough!” Lucas cut me off sharply, grabbing the phone back and disconnecting the call immediately.

He looked at me with disappointment. “Lily, are you crazy? You know how unstable my mother’s condition is. Why would you provoke her?”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I asked, “Lucas, can you swear that you two were just putting on an act and never crossed the line with each other?”

His eyes flickered, showing a brief moment of panic. Then, he wrapped his arms around me.

“Lily, I know this has all been very unfair to you. Just wait for me, and I promise I’ll make it up to you.”

He only spoke of making it up to me, yet he never denied his relationship with Tate. I finally had an answer to the question that had tormented me for so many years.

I pushed him away and walked back into the bedroom alone. Lucas didn't follow me. Through the door, I could hear him on the phone with Tate, discussing how to soothe Alison again.

With my ear against the door, I bit my lip to keep myself from crying aloud. Looking at the flight reminder on my screen, I knew leaving Lucas was the best decision I had ever made in my entire life.

I thought I would never see Lucas again. Unexpectedly, two years later, Lucas took on an overseas project, and the partner company happened to be the one I worked for.He often flew in on business trips to Firland, coming by my office every few days to look for me. Of course, I refused to see him every single time.As curious as they were, my colleagues kept asking me what my relationship was with him.I simply replied with an indifferent expression, “Just an ex.”A close friend of mine knew everything that had happened between Lucas and me.Sometimes, she would ask, “He came all the way here just to pursue you. Have you really never thought about getting back together?”I immediately shook my head. “Get back together? For what? For him to abandon me for his family all over again?”We looked at each other and laughed. My friend patted me on the shoulder and smiled. “Lily, you’re doing so much better now.”I didn’t say anything. She was right. Right after the breakup, I was no

The day Tate came to see me, it was raining. Having not seen each other for two months, she had lost a lot of weight and looked noticeably exhausted. We sat in the coffee shop, neither of us saying a word. It wasn’t until the coffee was served that the silence broke.Tate pushed the coffee toward me and said, “I’m sorry.”Over the years, she had apologized to me countless times, but I could tell that this was the only time she actually meant it.“Lily, I’m sorry. I know I have no right to say this.”“If you’re aware of that, then don’t say it at all.”Tate’s face turned pale, and tears spilled from her eyes the very next moment.“I admit… I did have feelings for Lucas that went beyond what they should have been. You know that, just like you, I grew up as an orphan. We both desperately longed for a family.“Even though the last three years were just an act, his mother always treated me like family, and Lucas took such good care of me. In my heart, I had long considered them my f

Lily's POVOn the other side of the world, in Firland, I had started at my new company, a foreign firm where my friend worked. The company culture was even better than I had imagined. My colleagues came from all around the world, and no one here knew anything about my past. I no longer had to worry about anyone looking at me with strange or judgmental eyes.Every day, I went to work and left on time, and as soon as I returned to my apartment, I practiced the local language. Each day was busy and fulfilling. I didn’t have any spare time to think about anything else.Yet on my fifth day at the new job, Lucas tracked me down. He was standing below my office building waiting for me, holding a bouquet of lilies—my absolute favorite—in his hands. As I walked out of the building, I bumped directly into him.“Lily,” he said, stuffing the flowers into my hands. “I’m here to take you home.”“The wedding with Tate has been canceled, and I’ve explained everything to my mom. As soon as we go

Two days later, Lucas took Tate back to his hometown. The wedding was held there, and the venue was decorated extravagantly. Alison sat in the front row, smiling from ear to ear.Lucas put on his suit and stood at the end of the aisle. As he watched Tate walk down the aisle toward him in a white wedding dress, Lily’s face filled his mind.He recalled the day he proposed to Lily. He had timed it down to the exact second. When there were two seconds left in the countdown, he got down on one knee, pulled a diamond ring from his jacket, and slipped it onto her finger. He swore he would start a family with her and spend the rest of his life by her side. She nodded repeatedly and said yes, crying tears of joy. That night, resting in his arms, she held up the diamond ring on her hand and said, “Lucas, don’t make me wait too long.”He kissed her forehead and promised that he never would. Yet, he made her wait for three whole years.Suddenly, the officiant’s voice echoed in Lucas’s ear. “

Lucas immediately panicked and kept calling her. He made several calls in a row, but every one of them went unanswered. At that moment, his heart sank. Why wasn’t she picking up? Had she run into some kind of trouble?Tate called to comfort him, saying, “Lucas, don’t panic. Lily has gone through so much, so it’s only natural for her to be angry. Let’s just give her a few days to cool off, and she’ll be fine.”Lucas didn’t say a word. He knew Tate made sense, yet an uneasy feeling lingered in his chest, growing stronger by the second. He couldn’t wait two days. With that, he barged straight into Lily’s department to look for her manager. The manager looked somewhat surprised to see him. “Mr. Karev, what brings you here?”“Give me the location Lily went to for her business trip.”The manager’s expression turned complicated. He took a resignation letter out of his desk drawer and pushed it toward Lucas.“She’s resigned.”Lucas stared at the resignation letter. Printed clearly i

Third-Person POVAfter Lily boarded her flight, Lucas stayed standing there for a very long time. It was only after watching her plane take off that he finally felt relieved enough to return to his car.Tate called him right then. “Lucas, after you drop off Lily, hurry back. Your mother is kicking up a fuss. She says she wants to see you.”He replied flatly, “Got it.”On his way back to the hospital, Lucas couldn’t help but replay the events of the past few days in his mind.On the night of the New Year’s Eve dinner, he had originally intended to get engaged to Lily and put an end to this three-year-long act. However, seeing Alison’s ardent and eager affection toward Tate, he changed his words at the last second.Lily had sat at the furthest spot from him, pouring glass after glass of wine down her throat and choking so hard that tears streamed down her face. He knew she was heartbroken, yet he couldn’t comfort her.Later on the balcony, he couldn’t stop himself from following h
