Chapter 4

Author: River Snapshot
When I woke up the next morning, Lucas was already gone. I gathered my documents and headed to the office to settle my resignation paperwork.

While I was packing up my desk, the receptionist mentioned someone was looking for me. The moment I stepped out of the elevator, Alison came rushing toward me in a frenzy.

“Mrs. Karev, you–”

A slap across my face left my cheek stinging.

Before I could react, she shoved me back roughly and shouted, “Lucas is marrying your best friend! How dare you have the nerve to cling to him?”

Her piercing voice echoed down the hall, drawing a crowd of colleagues who gathered to watch. Their judgmental glares felt like needles piercing my skin.

I said, my voice trembling, “Mrs. Karev, Lucas and Tate are just putting on an act. I’m the one who’s been his girlfriend from the very beginning.”

“Nonsense! You’re nothing but a homewrecker! Lucas and Tate registered their marriage long ago. Where do you even fit into this?”

The next second, she pulled out her phone and shoved a picture of a marriage certificate in front of my face. My body froze as I stared at the names printed on the certificate: Lucas Karev and Tate Hale.

Alison even held her phone up toward the bystanders around us.

“Everyone, judge for yourselves! My son and her best friend are legally married. If she isn’t a homewrecker, then what is she?”

I shook with sheer anger.

By the time Lucas arrived, the situation was already completely out of hand.

He grabbed Alison’s arm and said, “Mom, let’s go home and discuss this–”

“I’m going to say it right here and expose this shameless woman for who she is!”

Alison broke free from his grip and lunged toward me again, but Lucas immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me.

He turned his head and whispered, “Lily, don’t blame her. I’ll make this up to you.”

Unable to reach me, Alison screamed hysterically, like she was on the verge of a breakdown. “Lucas, if you don’t break things off with this homewrecker right now, I’ll kill myself!”

Lucas turned pale and instantly let go of me, rushing forward to support her. “Mom, Lily really isn’t–”

“Then who is she?”

I looked at Lucas, desperately waiting for him to set the record straight. All it would take was a single word from him.

Just then, Tate arrived at the scene. She looked hesitant, with tears in her eyes.

Lucas opened his mouth but hesitated to speak. In the end, I only heard him speak as if it meant nothing at all.

“Mom, I’ll break things off with her right now.”

I stood frozen, my mind blank.

The crowd erupted into murmurs.

“So she really is the homewrecker!”

“No wonder she’s resigning and packing her things. She’s feeling guilty…”

Alison fainted from the distress. Without sparing another glance at me, Lucas and Tate frantically dialed for an ambulance.

Meanwhile, I stood paralyzed on the spot. It took a long time before I finally walked out of the building.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Lucas.

“Lily, please come to the hospital and apologize to Mom, okay? The doctor said she can’t handle any more stress…”

I replied, “What did I do wrong?”

Yet, Lucas wouldn’t drop it, begging me to come to the hospital. “Lily, this is the last time, I promise.”

When I arrived, Alison was lying on the hospital bed, her face pale. Seeing her, my heart softened despite everything.

“Mrs. Karev, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have fallen for Lucas, and I certainly shouldn’t have been with him.”

Alison glared at me. “I don’t ever want to see you again.”

I let out a self-deprecating smile. They truly were never going to see me again anyway.

As I walked out of the ward, Tate rushed up to comfort me. “Lily, I know you’ve been through a lot. Once this last wedding act is over, I’ll give Lucas right back to you.”

I pushed her away gently. “There’s no need to return him. You two suit each other pretty well.”

Tate looked momentarily taken aback. She dropped to her knees and cried, “Lily, there’s really nothing going on between him and me…”

Yet, the subtle, intimate marks on her collarbone stung me.

Lucas happened to witness that moment. Assuming I was giving her a hard time, he pulled her up to her feet first.

“Don’t take it out on her,” he told me.

Tate tried to explain, “It’s not like that!”

Lucas was only more convinced that I was making things difficult for her.

He looked at me indifferently. “Aren't you leaving for your business trip? Let me drive you–”

I shook my head. “It’s fine.”

As I got into the car, a text message came from Tate.

[Lily, I promise you, I’ll stay far away from Lucas.]

Instead of replying, I blocked her number.

Lucas had said to me earlier, “Lily, I didn’t handle things too well today. When you get back from your trip, we’ll get married…”

Lucas still had no idea that I had bought a one-way ticket. This time, there would be no turning back.

I thought I would never see Lucas again. Unexpectedly, two years later, Lucas took on an overseas project, and the partner company happened to be the one I worked for.He often flew in on business trips to Firland, coming by my office every few days to look for me. Of course, I refused to see him every single time.As curious as they were, my colleagues kept asking me what my relationship was with him.I simply replied with an indifferent expression, “Just an ex.”A close friend of mine knew everything that had happened between Lucas and me.Sometimes, she would ask, “He came all the way here just to pursue you. Have you really never thought about getting back together?”I immediately shook my head. “Get back together? For what? For him to abandon me for his family all over again?”We looked at each other and laughed. My friend patted me on the shoulder and smiled. “Lily, you’re doing so much better now.”I didn’t say anything. She was right. Right after the breakup, I was no

The day Tate came to see me, it was raining. Having not seen each other for two months, she had lost a lot of weight and looked noticeably exhausted. We sat in the coffee shop, neither of us saying a word. It wasn’t until the coffee was served that the silence broke.Tate pushed the coffee toward me and said, “I’m sorry.”Over the years, she had apologized to me countless times, but I could tell that this was the only time she actually meant it.“Lily, I’m sorry. I know I have no right to say this.”“If you’re aware of that, then don’t say it at all.”Tate’s face turned pale, and tears spilled from her eyes the very next moment.“I admit… I did have feelings for Lucas that went beyond what they should have been. You know that, just like you, I grew up as an orphan. We both desperately longed for a family.“Even though the last three years were just an act, his mother always treated me like family, and Lucas took such good care of me. In my heart, I had long considered them my f

Lily's POVOn the other side of the world, in Firland, I had started at my new company, a foreign firm where my friend worked. The company culture was even better than I had imagined. My colleagues came from all around the world, and no one here knew anything about my past. I no longer had to worry about anyone looking at me with strange or judgmental eyes.Every day, I went to work and left on time, and as soon as I returned to my apartment, I practiced the local language. Each day was busy and fulfilling. I didn’t have any spare time to think about anything else.Yet on my fifth day at the new job, Lucas tracked me down. He was standing below my office building waiting for me, holding a bouquet of lilies—my absolute favorite—in his hands. As I walked out of the building, I bumped directly into him.“Lily,” he said, stuffing the flowers into my hands. “I’m here to take you home.”“The wedding with Tate has been canceled, and I’ve explained everything to my mom. As soon as we go

Two days later, Lucas took Tate back to his hometown. The wedding was held there, and the venue was decorated extravagantly. Alison sat in the front row, smiling from ear to ear.Lucas put on his suit and stood at the end of the aisle. As he watched Tate walk down the aisle toward him in a white wedding dress, Lily’s face filled his mind.He recalled the day he proposed to Lily. He had timed it down to the exact second. When there were two seconds left in the countdown, he got down on one knee, pulled a diamond ring from his jacket, and slipped it onto her finger. He swore he would start a family with her and spend the rest of his life by her side. She nodded repeatedly and said yes, crying tears of joy. That night, resting in his arms, she held up the diamond ring on her hand and said, “Lucas, don’t make me wait too long.”He kissed her forehead and promised that he never would. Yet, he made her wait for three whole years.Suddenly, the officiant’s voice echoed in Lucas’s ear. “

Lucas immediately panicked and kept calling her. He made several calls in a row, but every one of them went unanswered. At that moment, his heart sank. Why wasn’t she picking up? Had she run into some kind of trouble?Tate called to comfort him, saying, “Lucas, don’t panic. Lily has gone through so much, so it’s only natural for her to be angry. Let’s just give her a few days to cool off, and she’ll be fine.”Lucas didn’t say a word. He knew Tate made sense, yet an uneasy feeling lingered in his chest, growing stronger by the second. He couldn’t wait two days. With that, he barged straight into Lily’s department to look for her manager. The manager looked somewhat surprised to see him. “Mr. Karev, what brings you here?”“Give me the location Lily went to for her business trip.”The manager’s expression turned complicated. He took a resignation letter out of his desk drawer and pushed it toward Lucas.“She’s resigned.”Lucas stared at the resignation letter. Printed clearly i

Third-Person POVAfter Lily boarded her flight, Lucas stayed standing there for a very long time. It was only after watching her plane take off that he finally felt relieved enough to return to his car.Tate called him right then. “Lucas, after you drop off Lily, hurry back. Your mother is kicking up a fuss. She says she wants to see you.”He replied flatly, “Got it.”On his way back to the hospital, Lucas couldn’t help but replay the events of the past few days in his mind.On the night of the New Year’s Eve dinner, he had originally intended to get engaged to Lily and put an end to this three-year-long act. However, seeing Alison’s ardent and eager affection toward Tate, he changed his words at the last second.Lily had sat at the furthest spot from him, pouring glass after glass of wine down her throat and choking so hard that tears streamed down her face. He knew she was heartbroken, yet he couldn’t comfort her.Later on the balcony, he couldn’t stop himself from following h
