Chapter 1

Author: Mountain Dreamer
By the time we reached the fiftieth take, the right side of my face was badly swollen. Blood trickled from my nose and mouth, staining my collar.

The director clutched his , his voice trembling. "Ms. Monroe, if we keep going, something terrible could happen."

"We haven't even finished filming. What could possibly happen?" Zara Monroe rose from behind the monitors and slowly walked toward me.

She crouched down and wiped the blood from the corner of my lips with her fingertip. Her touch was as gentle as it used to be when she removed my makeup for me.

"Bridger, I know what you're upset about. You can be angry with me about losing the lead role, but you can't take it out on a newcomer. Apologize to him, and you won't have to film the remaining scenes."

I struggled to lift my head.

"It was a cheat shot. There are three camera angles. Pull up the full footage, and you'll see."

Kyson Bentley's eyes immediately reddened. "If Bridger says he didn't touch me, then he didn't. I'm just a newcomer. Taking a little mistreatment isn't a big deal. Zara, please don't damage your relationship over me."

He looked at me with wounded eyes. "Bridger just hasn't come to terms with losing the role. He didn't mean to target me."

Watching the tears on his face, I suddenly found the whole thing ridiculous.

During the actual take, he hadn't been able to squeeze out a single tear. Now that the cameras weren't rolling, he was putting on a performance worthy of an award.

Zara's expression darkened. "Kyson is still speaking up for you, and you can't even offer him a single apology?"

She stood up and looked down at me. "I made my first leading man an award-winning actor. I can make a second one, too.

"Since you claim to be so dedicated to your craft, finish the remaining fifty takes. Show the production team what professionalism looks like."

My breath caught for a moment.

In the past, if I'd even scraped my skin while working with a stunt harness, Zara would have ordered the shoot stopped immediately. She warned directors that if they ever injured me again, she would pull her investment from the entire production.

Now, on the strength of a single accusation from Kyson, she was making me endure a hundred punches.

The next punch landed, and the taste of blood flooded my mouth.

I turned my face toward Zara. She stood beside Kyson, her expression perfectly calm, as though what was happening before her were nothing more than a performance that had nothing to do with her.

By the eightieth take, I could barely make out the people around me.

Zara walked behind the monitors, a trace of amusement in her voice. "You can still admit you were wrong."

I swallowed the blood in my mouth and said nothing.

She watched me for several seconds. "Keep going."

At the hundredth take, Zara personally called cut. She walked past the crew and stopped in front of me.

Those hands had once held mine as we walked down red carpets. They had wiped away my tears and traced the lines of my face over and over in the middle of the night.

Now one of them rose high above me.

"This last punch is meant to teach you something. Just because I spoil you doesn't mean you get to make decisions for me."

Her fist struck my face with tremendous force.

A piercing ringing filled my right ear. Then every sound seemed to disappear behind a wall.

As my consciousness began to fade, someone grabbed my hair and forced me to face the camera.

Zara instructed casually, "Post this footage. Consider it my debut gift to Kyson."

Someone beside her hesitated. "What should we do about Bridger afterward?"

Zara shot him a cold look. "Today was just a lesson to teach him some manners. He only dares to act this way because he knows how much I spoil him. Once he's suffered enough, he'll come back and apologize."

She paused. "Bridger Callahan will remain the only head of the Monroe household. Get the best medication available. I won't have his face scarred."

Hearing this, the corners of my mouth twitched, and then I lost consciousness entirely.

Elina took my hand, and together we walked back down the red carpet. As we exchanged rings, I noticed that her hand was trembling slightly.I leaned closer and whispered, "What are you nervous about?"She pressed her lips together. "I'm afraid you'll regret this. I'm afraid you'll see her and change your mind."I froze for a moment. "You knew she'd come?""I guessed.""Then why weren't you afraid just now?"Elina looked into my eyes. "I was. My hands were shaking. But after they took her away, you didn't even look at her."She slipped the ring onto my finger. Her touch was so gentle, as though she were afraid of hurting me. "That's when I stopped being afraid."The wedding ended, and the guests gradually dispersed.I sat in the bridal suite, taking the lapel pin off my suit.Elina knocked and came in. She'd changed out of her wedding dress and was wearing comfortable clothes. Her hair was slightly mussed. She stood by the door and took a deep breath, as though she'd been pr

  • A Love Buried in Ashes   Chapter 17

On our wedding day, the first snow of the winter fell over Port Red.The Callahan and Conrad families were joining together through marriage. Just the names of the two families side by side were enough to keep high society talking for the next three years. The hotel's ballroom was filled with white roses and baby's breath. Three thousand flowers lined the path from the entrance to the end of the red carpet. The guest list was packed with leading figures from every industry. The names alone in the guest book could have filled a history of modern business.I took my mother's arm and walked step by step toward Elina. She stood at the end of the red carpet, wearing a pristine white wedding gown, her long hair pinned up and her makeup immaculate. When she saw me, her gaze suddenly softened, like a beam of light falling across a sheet of ice. Her throat moved as though she were holding something back.I walked up to her.She reached out and took the hand my mother placed in hers.My

The wedding was set for a month later.Throughout that month, Elina came to the Callahan estate every day.Sometimes she brought my mother her favorite flowers. Other times, she kept my father company while he played chess. My father was a terrible chess player, but he had a terrible temper, too. Taking back a move was practically a daily occurrence. Elina always pretended not to notice and even praised him for making a brilliant move.I had to bite back laughter beside them until my stomach hurt. One evening, Elina arrived earlier than usual. She was carrying two cups of coffee."One sugar, triple shot." She handed me one of the cups.I took it and had a sip. "How did you know I like a triple-shot?""You posted about it on social media once. There was a picture of coffee, and your caption said, 'Coffee without a triple shot has no soul.'""That post was from two years ago."Elina took a sip of her own drink and fell silent, but her ears turned red again.I'd noticed that El

In the days that followed, the Callahan family's retaliation came swiftly and quietly. There were no public statements, no messages exchanged through the media. It was like a silent blade, cutting into Monroe Media's vital interests one strike at a time.Within three days, the Callahan Group terminated two major partnership projects with Monroe Media. The banks that worked with the company reassessed its business risks. Three of its core advertisers terminated their contracts at the same time.Investigations were also launched into Monroe Media's unauthorized use of an artist's account and its coercion of an actor into performing dangerous scenes.Zara was overwhelmed. Only then did she understand who the Callahan family of Port Red truly was.A week later, the Monroe family held an emergency internal meeting. The decision was to expel Zara from the family. The official reason was dressed up in respectable language: [Due to personal conduct that has seriously damaged the family'

I sat on the plane, watching the lights of South Chilton recede through the window."Elina.""Hmm?""Thank you for coming to South Chilton to pick me up tonight.""Of course. You're my fiance." She said it in a matter-of-fact tone, as casually as if she were commenting on the weather. But I noticed the tips of her ears turning faintly red.For some reason, I felt an enormous sense of relief. At last, I had someone I could lean on, at least for a little while.I still had no idea where this marriage would lead, but for now, she was on my side. That was enough."Does your wrist still hurt?" Elina suddenly asked.I instinctively tucked my hand into my sleeve. "No."She said nothing. Instead, she took a tube of cream from her coat pocket and handed it to me.I looked at it. It was for bruises. "You carry this around with you?""I prepared it before leaving." She paused. "I guessed she might not let you leave peacefully."I stared at her for a moment. "You knew she'd come to th

The Callahan family of Port Red, the undisputed most powerful family in the city. For countless people, it was a destination they could only dream of reaching. All the color drained from Zara's face."That's impossible. He can't be part of the Callahan family. If he's an heir to the Callahan fortune, why would he become an actor?"She suddenly looked up at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? If you'd told me earlier, how could I have...""Cheated?" I finished for her.Zara was speechless. The corners of my mouth lifted slightly. "Zara, are you saying you cheated because you thought I had no powerful family backing me? If you'd known I was the Callahan heir, you wouldn't have dared."I laughed. "You weren't afraid of hurting me. You were afraid of the consequences."Zara opened her mouth, but no words came out."Back then, you said that people who looked down on actors were only exposing the darkness inside themselves. Now I'm giving those words right back to you."I didn't lo
