Chapter 2

Author: Ultimate Beauty
I stared at him in shock. My throat hurt when I spoke.

"Are… Are you telling me to lick it clean?"

He smiled coldly. "Unless you want your brother's medical bills cut off."

Tears streamed down my face as I dropped to my knees.

I bent down and licked the sauce off the floor bit by bit. I picked up the ribs and shoved them into my mouth in a frenzy.

By the end, I couldn't take it anymore. I ran into the bathroom and threw up.

When I came out, Harvey held out a napkin.

"Wash up and go to bed."

He turned around and walked away without looking back.

My grip on the napkin tightened until my knuckles ached. My stomach churned violently, and tears started falling.

The next morning, I carried a lunchbox to the hospital. The boy on the bed lay still and quiet. An oxygen tube was connected to his nose.

I couldn't stop myself from caressing his face.

"Jordan, I miss you so much."

He didn't move at all.

When I was twenty, a gang of thugs cornered me in an alley. Sixteen-year-old Jordan shielded me from a broken bottle. He had been in a coma ever since.

It had been eight years, and there was still no sign of him waking up.

My phone suddenly rang. I quickly picked up.

Harvey's soft and gentle voice came through.

"Jenna, I think I remember that I used to love you."

Tears streamed down my face as I touched the diamond ring on my finger. Hope filled my heart.

"Really?"

"Yes. Come to Mount Prayer. I'll be waiting."

Mount Prayer was the mountain we once hiked together. I had prayed then for Jordan to wake up soon and for Harvey to stay safe.

Harvey's wish had been for him and me to never be apart.

I knew it! He only said those things before because of the accident. His mind wasn't clear. He couldn't really mean them.

I hailed a cab and headed straight for Mount Prayer. The sky was getting dark, and it looked like it might rain soon. Clenching my jaw, I started climbing the steps one at a time.

Thirty minutes later, the storm broke.

I was still halfway up when the rain poured down. The rain made it hard to even see what's ahead. Panicked, I tried to call Harvey.

The signal wasn't stable. After a long while, Harvey finally picked up.

Before I could say a word, he started yelling at me.

"Jenna, you deserve to die! Katie gave you the money you asked for, and you still drove her to suicide? Why don't you just die already? I must have been blind to ever marry someone like you!"

The call ended abruptly. The signal was gone.

My mind went blank. Clutching the railing, I started back down step by step.

Suddenly, my foot slipped on the moss. I tumbled down the stairs.

When I woke up, Harvey was sitting by my bed. He grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked me up.

"Jenna, it's a shame you're not an actress. Are you trying to use this stunt to make me feel sorry for you? Forget it. The only way out is if you apologize to Katie right now."

I chuckled bitterly. My voice was extremely hoarse.

"Harvey, weren't you the one who told me to go to Mount Prayer?"

"How dare you bring that up?" He went berserk and grabbed me by my neck. "Was that your excuse to torment Katie, or just another scheme to steal money?"

I was confused and shook my head weakly.

The taste of blood spread through my mouth.

He lifted me off the bed by the throat, but froze when he saw the bruises on my body.

His fingertips brushed over them gently.

Then, he sneered.

"Jenna, you'll stop at nothing to get what you want. You disgust me."

He yanked my wrist and dragged me into the ward next door. His tone was harsh and commanding.

"Apologize!"

Katie had a bandage wrapped around her wrist. There were faint traces of blood seeping through.

She smiled sweetly. "Let it go, Harvey. Jenna just wanted money for her brother's treatment. Anyone would've done the same. Don't be mad at her."

I blinked in confusion. "Money? What money?"

"Liar! Fraud!" Harvey suddenly snapped. He kicked his foot against my knee. "Get down and apologize!"

I collapsed to the ground and crawled at his feet.

Seeing Nathan, she immediately scolded him. "I told you to stay with Jenna! How did she almost end up getting hurt?""It was me. "Jenna."Harvey suddenly grabbed my wrist. His eyes brimmed with tears. "Can't you give me another chance to win you back?"I pulled away and said firmly, "No. Let's end this here."I walked a few steps forward, but hearing him follow close behind made me stop and turn around."Harvey, the moment you drained every ounce of love I had for you, I stopped looking back."His hand froze midair, and tears streamed down his face.I suddenly remembered something. "I buried the wedding ring under the tree. Did you know that?"He didn't, but he remembered the day he threw my mother's keepsake out the window. His knees buckled, and he collapsed right there on the street.I didn't look back. I hailed a cab and went straight to the cemetery. Jordan's photo was on the gravestone. He was thirteen in it, smiling, bright and innocent.I hadn't visited for a long time. The tombstone was covered in dust.I kneeled down, brushed off the fallen leaves, and whispered, "Jordan, I came to see you.

I thought Harvey had given up, but he had more patience than I expected. Soon, he started showing up at my studio with roses.I'd take all of them and toss them in the trash. But he wouldn't give up. He'd come back again, just as relentless.Even Shirley, my employee, was moved. "Say, Ms. Salsbury. Although Mr. Granger likes you and treats you well, that other handsome stranger seems really devoted to you too."I glanced at Harvey and said coldly, "What good is love that comes too late? Nobody's obliged to wait forever."Nathan was picking me up for dinner at his place again.Harvey's roses fell to the ground, and he fled. This time, he disappeared for an entire month. As it turned out, Jackson Corp had hit a crisis. "Professor." I felt a little embarrassed.Gina shot me a glare of disappointment, like she couldn't believe I'd still let myself get dragged into this. Honestly, I was just as clueless. I really didn't plan to get back together with Harvey. But clearly, Gina thought otherwise. After a quick phone call, she said, "My son's actually a good guy. He's been single all these years. Why don't you two try getting along?"I was about to politely decline when a man walked toward us. He was handsome enough to make anyone stop breathing. Then, he said, "Mom."I froze completely. No wonder the CEO of a top global corporation had wanted to meet with me right after I completed my apprenticeship! He turned out to be Gina's son.Gina snorted. "I'm going home to rest. You two can do whatever you want."I had already known Nathan Granger from work. We had met a few times and gotten along well. He had this calm, gentle air about him that made people feel at ease.I had thought it was just che

By then, I was already across the ocean. I became a student under my college professor, dedicating myself fully to fashion design.Whenever I had free time, I traveled and documented every place I went. In less than a year, I had been to over thirty countries. It was just a shame that Jordan never got to see any of it.When my first clothing line debuted, the CEO of Ferdin Group reached out to meet me in person and placed an order worth ten million. With his backing, Jupiter quickly became a name that people in the industry recognized. My love life had fallen apart, but I had finally achieved the dream I'd once set aside—and saw, on Jordan's behalf, all the places he never could. When Gina Granger heard I had agreed to go abroad, the first thing she asked was, "Jenna, did you two break up?"I nodded. Years ago, when I turned down her offer, I said, "Professor Granger, if I had to choose between love and going after my dreams, I'd choose love."She had patted my shoulder and s

Harvey was gasping for air, and his eyes were bloodshot. The papers in his fingers crumpled from his grip. "D-Did she really donate a kidney?"The doctor looked at him with open disdain. "Mr. Jackson, if I'm not mistaken, the recipient was you. It happened five years ago.""H-How could this be?" Harvey muttered under his breath. He kept looking around for Katie, but she had slipped away at some point.Suddenly, he tried to rush into the ward and yelled, "I want to see Jenna!""I'm sorry, but Ms. Salsbury begged us before she passed not to let you in. Please respect the wishes of the deceased, Mr. Jackson."Several doctors stood shoulder to shoulder, blocking the doorway.Harvey staggered and turned away to heave. The doctors didn't budge. He suddenly dropped to his knees at the door and shouted into the ward, "Jenna, I know you think it's my fault, and I know you hate me. Please, I need to see you one last time!"Jenna—" He started coughing violently, then doubled over and spa
