Chapter 1

I pressed a hand to my aching stomach while rummaging through the first-aid kit for something to ease the pain.

Suddenly, someone yanked me back by the collar and forced me to turn around.

Harvey Jackson frowned impatiently.

"It's the middle of the night! What's with all the ruckus? You keep saying you want me to get better, but deep down you're just waiting for me to die so you can inherit the Jacksons' fortune and save your useless brother, aren't you?"

My stomach ached even more, and I clung to his shirt.

"Harvey, my stomach hurts," I choked out.

He froze for a moment before prying my fingers off one by one.

"Jenna, I'm the one who's sick. Drop the act. It won't work on me."

My hand slipped down helplessly.

Just then, Katie walked in with a hand over her belly. She wrapped her arms around Harvey's arm and said coyly, "Harvey, I'm hungry. Will you make me barbecued ribs?"

I stood there in stunned silence. I even stopped feeling my stomachache. I just stared at Harvey.

He used to love my barbecued ribs. Sometimes, he'd eat them for both lunch and dinner. I gave up my career just so I could take care of him.

So… It was really for Katie all along?

Harvey shuffled his feet uncomfortably under my gaze, then shoved me aside.

"I'm hungry. Go make barbecued ribs."

"I…" The words got stuck in my throat. In the end, I just pressed a hand to my stomach and went to the kitchen.

From outside, laughter and playful voices drifted in. Harvey, who was once cold and distant, was now warm and lively with Katie.

Over an hour later, I brought out a plate of barbecued ribs and set it on the table.

Katie took one bite before rushing to the trash can and gagging violently. Her face turned pale.

"Harvey, I should leave. If I stay any longer, I won't even last a month."

Harvey shot me a vicious glare.

He rushed over, scooped Katie into his arms, and tenderly wiped the corners of her lips. He even patted her back gently.

When she finally calmed down, he stormed back, grabbed me by the neck, and shoved my head into a pot of soup.

His voice was shrill.

"Jenna, how disgusting can you get? You knew Katie was sick, and you still tried to torment her! Did I really fall in love with someone this evil?"

The greasy broth burned as it flooded my mouth, nose, and eyes.

I coughed and choked until Harvey finally let go.

My hair clung to my face. Soup dripped down my body, leaving me a soaking, filthy mess.

I didn't care about that. I shoved him away with all my strength and stumbled into the bathroom before rinsing my burning eyes under cold water.

After a long while, I lifted my head and met the woman in the mirror with a bitter smile.

'Jenna, was it worth it?' I asked myself.

Suddenly, the bathroom door rattled with heavy pounding. Supporting myself against the wall, I stepped out and saw a flicker of panic in Harvey's eyes. However, it was gone as quickly as it came.

The barbecued ribs lay scattered on the floor. Sauce splattered everywhere.

Harvey pinched me by the waist. His smile was cruel.

"You're my wife. I got into that accident because of you. Cleaning this up shouldn't be a problem, right?"

I nodded while ignoring the pain in my chest and stomach.

I reached for the broom, but Harvey grabbed my wrist and laughed.

"Jenna, don't waste food. Get on your knees and lick it clean."

I didn't wait for Harvey to wake up. That night, I flew back with Nathan. When we arrived at the airport, Gina was already waiting there. Her face was stern, features drawn tight with anger. Seeing Nathan, she immediately scolded him. "I told you to stay with Jenna! How did she almost end up getting hurt?""It was me. I told him to sort out his work," I said quickly, looping my arm through hers. Warmth surged inside me. I had grown up with only my younger brother by my side. The woman standing before me was the first to show me how it felt to have a mother. I understood her feelings, and I cherished her care deeply. As for Nathan, I didn't mind him being close either. I let him stay close. Even after all the pain I had been through, I wasn't afraid of loving the wrong person again. "Jenna."Harvey suddenly grabbed my wrist. His eyes brimmed with tears. "Can't you give me another chance to win you back?"I pulled away and said firmly, "No. Let's end this here."I walked a few steps forward, but hearing him follow close behind made me stop and turn around."Harvey, the moment you drained every ounce of love I had for you, I stopped looking back."His hand froze midair, and tears streamed down his face.I suddenly remembered something. "I buried the wedding ring under the tree. Did you know that?"He didn't, but he remembered the day he threw my mother's keepsake out the window. His knees buckled, and he collapsed right there on the street.I didn't look back. I hailed a cab and went straight to the cemetery. Jordan's photo was on the gravestone. He was thirteen in it, smiling, bright and innocent.I hadn't visited for a long time. The tombstone was covered in dust.I kneeled down, brushed off the fallen leaves, and whispered, "Jordan, I came to see you.

I thought Harvey had given up, but he had more patience than I expected. Soon, he started showing up at my studio with roses.I'd take all of them and toss them in the trash. But he wouldn't give up. He'd come back again, just as relentless.Even Shirley, my employee, was moved. "Say, Ms. Salsbury. Although Mr. Granger likes you and treats you well, that other handsome stranger seems really devoted to you too."I glanced at Harvey and said coldly, "What good is love that comes too late? Nobody's obliged to wait forever."Nathan was picking me up for dinner at his place again.Harvey's roses fell to the ground, and he fled. This time, he disappeared for an entire month. As it turned out, Jackson Corp had hit a crisis. Due to secrets being leaked, rivals pounced, and the already troubled company was on the brink of shutdown.I heard Harvey flew back that same day.The man behind the attack was Nathan. When I learned that, I raised an eyebrow. At the same time, I filed for divor

"Professor." I felt a little embarrassed.Gina shot me a glare of disappointment, like she couldn't believe I'd still let myself get dragged into this. Honestly, I was just as clueless. I really didn't plan to get back together with Harvey. But clearly, Gina thought otherwise. After a quick phone call, she said, "My son's actually a good guy. He's been single all these years. Why don't you two try getting along?"I was about to politely decline when a man walked toward us. He was handsome enough to make anyone stop breathing. Then, he said, "Mom."I froze completely. No wonder the CEO of a top global corporation had wanted to meet with me right after I completed my apprenticeship! He turned out to be Gina's son.Gina snorted. "I'm going home to rest. You two can do whatever you want."I had already known Nathan Granger from work. We had met a few times and gotten along well. He had this calm, gentle air about him that made people feel at ease.I had thought it was just che

By then, I was already across the ocean. I became a student under my college professor, dedicating myself fully to fashion design.Whenever I had free time, I traveled and documented every place I went. In less than a year, I had been to over thirty countries. It was just a shame that Jordan never got to see any of it.When my first clothing line debuted, the CEO of Ferdin Group reached out to meet me in person and placed an order worth ten million. With his backing, Jupiter quickly became a name that people in the industry recognized. My love life had fallen apart, but I had finally achieved the dream I'd once set aside—and saw, on Jordan's behalf, all the places he never could. When Gina Granger heard I had agreed to go abroad, the first thing she asked was, "Jenna, did you two break up?"I nodded. Years ago, when I turned down her offer, I said, "Professor Granger, if I had to choose between love and going after my dreams, I'd choose love."She had patted my shoulder and s

Harvey was gasping for air, and his eyes were bloodshot. The papers in his fingers crumpled from his grip. "D-Did she really donate a kidney?"The doctor looked at him with open disdain. "Mr. Jackson, if I'm not mistaken, the recipient was you. It happened five years ago.""H-How could this be?" Harvey muttered under his breath. He kept looking around for Katie, but she had slipped away at some point.Suddenly, he tried to rush into the ward and yelled, "I want to see Jenna!""I'm sorry, but Ms. Salsbury begged us before she passed not to let you in. Please respect the wishes of the deceased, Mr. Jackson."Several doctors stood shoulder to shoulder, blocking the doorway.Harvey staggered and turned away to heave. The doctors didn't budge. He suddenly dropped to his knees at the door and shouted into the ward, "Jenna, I know you think it's my fault, and I know you hate me. Please, I need to see you one last time!"Jenna—" He started coughing violently, then doubled over and spa
