Chapter 4 No Reason to Look Back

Penulis: Lena
I stood outside the glass, staring at Rosalie lying in the hospital bed. Tears immediately welled in my eyes.

Her face was so pale that there was not a trace of color in it. An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose, and the back of her hand was covered with needle marks. At that moment, I barely dared to breathe.

When I entered, she was still awake.

At the sound of my footsteps, she slowly opened her eyes. The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened. She reached for my hand, looking so weak that it seemed as though she might break at any moment. "Ju."

I immediately tightened my grip on her hand. "I'm here. Don't be scared."

She looked at me for a long time before tears suddenly spilled down her cheeks. "Ju, are you a homewrecker?"

My entire body froze.

I did not care if other people called me names. I did not care if they hurt me ruthlessly. But not Rosalie. Not her.

If she had not donated a kidney to save me, I would have died long ago. And because of complications from the surgery, Rosalie had struggled to get out of bed ever since.

I shook my head desperately, my throat raw with pain. "No. I'm not."

She cried even harder. "But that's what everyone online is saying. They said you wouldn't leave a married man alone."

I bent down and pressed my cheek against her hand, repeating over and over that it was not true.

Just then, the hospital room door opened.

I turned around, and my whole body tensed instantly. Diana had arrived with a fruit basket in her hands.

Behind her stood Charles' younger brother, Cedric Grayson.

I immediately got to my feet and stepped in front of the hospital bed. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to explain," Diana said softly. "The things people have been saying online are awful. I was afraid Rosie would misunderstand."

Rosalie's eyes brightened at once. She looked at Diana as though she had finally found the last bit of hope she could cling to. "Diana, my sister isn't like that, right?"

I looked at Diana too.

For just that moment, I actually hoped she would tell the truth, even if it was only one sentence.

Diana nodded. "Right. She's not like that."

Rosalie visibly relaxed.

But in the very next second, Cedric laughed. "Why are you covering up for her, Diana? Isn't her sister a homewrecker?"

The entire room fell silent.

I whipped around.

Rosalie froze as well.

Cedric stood by the door, his tone light and casual, as though he were talking about something completely ordinary. "You're already legally married to my brother, yet she's still clinging to him. Tell me that's not homewrecker behavior!"

Rosalie's face went deathly pale.

She stared desperately at Diana, waiting for her to deny it. However, Diana merely stood there, her lips pale. She did not say a single word.

And in that moment, I watched helplessly as something inside Rosalie shattered.

The monitor began shrieking. Her breathing became erratic, and her chest heaved violently as her face drained of colour.

"Rosalie!" I lunged toward her and pressed the emergency button before turning around and shoving Diana away. "Get out! Who told you to come?"

The fruit basket fell to the floor, sending fruit rolling everywhere. Diana stumbled back two steps, her face turning pale with panic. "Juliet, listen to me. Cedric didn't mean it like that."

I glared at her, trembling from head to toe. "Why didn't you clarify it then? You watched her have an attack and didn't say a single word!"

…

When the nurses and doctors rushed in, the room had descended into chaos. I called for the doctors while pushing those people toward the door. "Get out. All of you, get out!"

Just then, Charles arrived.

The moment the door opened, I thought that at the very least, he would look at Rosalie first. But instead, he went straight to Diana and steadied her. "Are you alright?"

Diana's eyes immediately reddened as she clutched his arm. "Charles, I only came to explain, but Juliet suddenly shoved me."

Charles immediately turned toward me, his expression darkening. "Enough is enough, Juliet! Diana only came to see your sister out of kindness. She's pregnant. Are you going to bear responsibility for frightening her?"

I stood beside Rosalie's hospital bed, feeling something inside me suddenly turning hollow as I listened to his reproach.

…

Meanwhile, Rosalie was being resuscitated. Doctors and nurses crowded around her bed, and the monitor continued to shriek. Yet to Charles, Diana's unborn child was all that mattered right then.

I looked at him and suddenly did not want to argue anymore. I simply raised my hand and pointed toward the door, my voice so hoarse that it barely sounded like my own. "Get out. All of you… Out!"

At that moment, the doctor also sternly ordered everyone else to leave.

The room finally fell silent.

…

It took a long time before Rosalie was finally pulled back from the brink.

I sat beside her bed and stayed there until late into the night, when she slowly regained consciousness. The moment she opened her eyes and saw me, tears began to fall.

I leaned down and wrapped my arms tightly around her. "Let's go."

She trembled softly in my arms.

I stroked her hair, my voice trembling as well. "Let's leave this hellhole. We'll sell the old house and never come back."

Rosalie nodded through her tears. "I'll go with you, Ju."

…

For the next few days, I barely slept.

A week later, we had finished all the necessary paperwork.

Before the plane took off, I checked my phone one last time. There were no new messages. I snapped my old SIM card in half, then turned away without looking back.

The hospital refunded the remaining treatment fees to the original account. The note attached to the transaction was simple: 'Patient transferred.'

When Charles saw the notification, he was at the wedding venue. He frantically called my number again and again, but every call went unanswered.

Charles had lost a lot of weight. The calm confidence that had once made him seem so unshakable, as though he could effortlessly keep everyone around him under control, had been worn away little by little over the past two years.Perhaps because he saw that I was not turning around and walking away, he seemed to breathe a little easier."Are you doing well now?" he asked."Pretty well.""Are you really?" He looked at me as though he couldn't quite believe it."I really am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, sending fallen leaves skittering across the pavement.Charles remained silent for a long time before finally speaking. "I used to think you wouldn't really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd eventually stay right where you were."I listened without responding.Because he was right. The person I had been back then really had been too willing to endure. But I was not that person anymore. He lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Is there really not e

Two years later, Rosalie and I returned home. When the plane landed, the sky outside was bright. I sat in my seat and watched as the familiar city slowly spread out beyond the window. I felt none of the breathless misery I had felt when I left, nor the uneasiness I had imagined I would feel upon returning.I was simply calm.It was as though I had taken a long detour, only to find myself standing here again.Scott was already waiting at the airport exit. He did not bring any flowers or arrange any elaborate welcome. He simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "Tired from the flight?"Rosalie hugged her cup and quietly said, "Thank you."He smiled and casually opened the car door for us.During the drive, he did not mention anything about the past. He only told us that he had already arranged a place for us to stay. It was close to both the hospital and the company. If we were not comfortable there, we could change places. There was no rush.I sat in the back seat, watc

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 8 Starting Over

After Rosalie had spent a full year receiving treatment abroad, her condition finally stabilized. She still needed to continue rehabilitation, and her walking was still not quite back to normal, but at least she no longer woke up in a panic throughout the night or trembled whenever she heard certain names. On the day of her follow-up examination, the doctor closed her medical record and told me, "Her body will recover gradually, and so will her emotions."I sat in the chair and let out a long breath. For the entire year, I had been wound tight. The night before every follow-up appointment, I could barely sleep. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Rosalie to make sure her breathing was steady, her forehead was not too warm, and she had taken her medication on schedule.Once she could slowly start doing things on her own, I began taking on online freelance work. It did not pay much, but at least I no longer had to survive solely on what was left from sel

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 7 I Don't Want to See You

I had originally thought that once Charles failed to find me, enough time would pass and he would eventually give up. But I had underestimated him.…That day, I had just returned from the pharmacy with a bag of medicine in my hand. The moment I reached the hospital room, I saw a figure outside the door. He wore a black overcoat, his shoulders still held straight, but he had lost a considerable amount of weight.I stopped in my tracks.Charles saw me, too. Before I could say anything, Rosalie, who was lying on the hospital bed, suddenly went pale. Her fingers clenched tightly around the edge of the blanket, her breathing became erratic, and her shoulders began trembling uncontrollably.I hurried over, set the medicine on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the bed, blocking her from view. "What are you doing here?"Charles looked at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. "I came to see how you two were doing.""You've seen us. You can leave now."He did no

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 6 Slowly, Life Moved Forward

During the first month after I moved abroad, I barely got a full night's sleep.Rosalie's condition was worse than the doctors had initially expected. During the day, she seemed relatively calm, but something always went wrong at night. Sometimes she would lie there with her eyes closed, tears slipping down her cheeks as she repeated the same sentence over and over. "My sister isn't like that… She's not…"I would sit beside her bed, holding her hand and calling her name again and again, but she seemed unable to wake up no matter how hard I tried.During the day, I accompanied her to her examinations. At night, I stayed by her side. I was even afraid to stop and wash my face in case I missed something important. When we first arrived abroad, my command of the local language was not fluent enough for me to handle all the hospital procedures on my own. The medical terminology was especially difficult. Whenever the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen while frantically ta

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 5 The Truth Comes to Light

When Charles arrived at the hospital, the hospital room was already empty. The nurse looked up at him. "You're too late. The family just finished the paperwork, and the patient was transferred to another hospital.""Where?""I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that."He stood in the doorway, his expression growing grimmer by the second. He pulled out his phone and called my number. The only thing that came through the receiver was a mechanical female voice. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Next, he went to the place where I had been staying. The landlord was crouched by the doorway, sorting vegetables. When Charles asked about me, the landlord answered him without even looking up. "She already moved out. She already returned the keys. Didn't even have time to collect her deposit. She left in a hurry."Charles stood outside the empty apartment for a long time, unable to say a word. But the scandal back home did not die down just because I had left.At first, th
