Chapter 3 Things I Thought Were Mine

Penulis: Lena
I had nowhere to go, so in the end, I could only check into a cheap budget hotel. The room was pitifully small, and even the curtains were old.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I called Rosalie first. The moment she answered, the first thing she asked was, "Ju, have you been crying?"

My nose stung, but I still told her I had not.

She was silent for a moment before asking softly, "Did you and Charles fight? People online have been talking about you."

My heart sank. The thing I had feared most had still happened.

As soon as I hung up, I checked social media. The story was not high on the trending list, but it was high enough for everyone who mattered to see. And the headline was painfully conspicuous.

'Pregnant Best Friend Registers Marriage, Homewrecker Makes a Scene'

They had put together a whole collection of pictures underneath it—the video from the private room, photos outside the vital records office, and old pictures of Charles and me together.

The most disgusting part was how thoroughly they had twisted the timeline.

They claimed that Charles and Diana were the couple, and that I had inserted myself into their relationship later. They even said that because my sister's illness had cost so much money, I had desperately clung to Charles because I needed someone to financially support me.

The comments were filled with every kind of vicious accusation, yet I read them one by one. My eyes burned terribly, but I could not even cry.

Before long, a message came from my company as well.

Because the negative public attention surrounding me had affected the company's image, I was formally notified that my employment had been terminated.

I stared at those words for a long time without reacting.

I had worked myself to the bone for that job.

When I first started as an intern, I stayed up all night with clients revising proposals, so exhausted that I secretly wiped away tears in the bathroom. Later, as I took on more projects, there were often days when I barely slept more than a few hours at a time.

I had thought at least one thing in my life was entirely my own. But apparently, even that was not truly mine.

…

By evening, I still went to the Graysons' place. Not because I still had any hope left. I simply wanted to see what I had really meant to them after all these years.

I had never been to that estate before. After seven years of dating Charles, I had never met his parents even once. Every time I brought them up, he told me that his family was traditional and that we would talk about it later.

And I had actually believed him.

When the door opened, Charles' mother, Laura Hawkins, noticed Diana first. She immediately took Diana's hand and greeted her warmly. "You must be Diana. Come in, dear."

I stood at the doorway, being ignored like I was invisible.

When Laura finally noticed me, she frowned and asked Charles, "Who is she?"

Suddenly, I felt inexplicably nervous. But after only half a second of silence, Charles answered coldly, "She's a new chauffeur the company hired."

I stood there, looking down at my plainly dressed self, and understood everything. Compared with Diana, I was not someone he was proud to bring home. I was not presentable enough for his family.

Laura immediately lost interest in me and turned back to Diana, enthusiastically chatting with her.

Invitation samples and bridal magazines were spread across the coffee table. I only glanced at them, but it felt as though someone had suddenly yanked hard at my heart.

That invitation was one I had chosen.

Six months ago, Charles and I had stayed up late choosing it together. He told me that when we eventually held our wedding, we would use that exact design.

The design sketch tucked inside the bridal magazine was also one I had once loved.

At the time, I had thought it was too expensive and had not had the heart to order it. Charles had held me in his arms and promised that once his year-end bonus came in, he'd buy it for me.

So, it was not that he had refused to buy it. He had simply bought it for someone else.

Laura flipped through the invitation samples and said softly, "Make sure the names are changed."

Charles took it from her and casually called the wedding planner. "Change the name to Diana Sayer. And take her measurements again."

Even as he said those words, his expression did not change in the slightest.

I listened to them and felt as though my chest had been hollowed out.

Only after Laura took Diana upstairs did Charles finally walk over to me. "I…"

I looked at him without saying anything.

He sighed. "I'm sorry. Whatever you need, I can still help you."

I suddenly wanted to laugh. "Did you always think I stayed by your side because you had money?"

Charles frowned. "Wasn't that the reason? Unlike you, I never wanted anything from you. I don't owe you anything."

I looked at him, and the last remaining warmth in my heart went completely cold.

Just then, I got a call from the hospital.

The nurse sounded extremely urgent. "Are you Rosalie Whitfield's family member? The patient's emotions suddenly became unstable, and her condition has deteriorated. Please come to the hospital immediately."

My vision went black for a moment before I turned and ran.

…

By the time I reached the hospital, Rosalie had already been transferred to the observation ward. The doctor said she had seen the things being said about me online, and her emotions had suddenly collapsed.

Her health had already been poor to begin with, and the shock had nearly been more than her body could withstand.

Charles had lost a lot of weight. The calm confidence that had once made him seem so unshakable, as though he could effortlessly keep everyone around him under control, had been worn away little by little over the past two years.Perhaps because he saw that I was not turning around and walking away, he seemed to breathe a little easier."Are you doing well now?" he asked."Pretty well.""Are you really?" He looked at me as though he couldn't quite believe it."I really am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, sending fallen leaves skittering across the pavement.Charles remained silent for a long time before finally speaking. "I used to think you wouldn't really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd eventually stay right where you were."I listened without responding.Because he was right. The person I had been back then really had been too willing to endure. But I was not that person anymore. He lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Is there really not e

Two years later, Rosalie and I returned home. When the plane landed, the sky outside was bright. I sat in my seat and watched as the familiar city slowly spread out beyond the window. I felt none of the breathless misery I had felt when I left, nor the uneasiness I had imagined I would feel upon returning.I was simply calm.It was as though I had taken a long detour, only to find myself standing here again.Scott was already waiting at the airport exit. He did not bring any flowers or arrange any elaborate welcome. He simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "Tired from the flight?"Rosalie hugged her cup and quietly said, "Thank you."He smiled and casually opened the car door for us.During the drive, he did not mention anything about the past. He only told us that he had already arranged a place for us to stay. It was close to both the hospital and the company. If we were not comfortable there, we could change places. There was no rush.I sat in the back seat, watc

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 8 Starting Over

After Rosalie had spent a full year receiving treatment abroad, her condition finally stabilized. She still needed to continue rehabilitation, and her walking was still not quite back to normal, but at least she no longer woke up in a panic throughout the night or trembled whenever she heard certain names. On the day of her follow-up examination, the doctor closed her medical record and told me, "Her body will recover gradually, and so will her emotions."I sat in the chair and let out a long breath. For the entire year, I had been wound tight. The night before every follow-up appointment, I could barely sleep. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Rosalie to make sure her breathing was steady, her forehead was not too warm, and she had taken her medication on schedule.Once she could slowly start doing things on her own, I began taking on online freelance work. It did not pay much, but at least I no longer had to survive solely on what was left from sel

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 7 I Don't Want to See You

I had originally thought that once Charles failed to find me, enough time would pass and he would eventually give up. But I had underestimated him.…That day, I had just returned from the pharmacy with a bag of medicine in my hand. The moment I reached the hospital room, I saw a figure outside the door. He wore a black overcoat, his shoulders still held straight, but he had lost a considerable amount of weight.I stopped in my tracks.Charles saw me, too. Before I could say anything, Rosalie, who was lying on the hospital bed, suddenly went pale. Her fingers clenched tightly around the edge of the blanket, her breathing became erratic, and her shoulders began trembling uncontrollably.I hurried over, set the medicine on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the bed, blocking her from view. "What are you doing here?"Charles looked at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. "I came to see how you two were doing.""You've seen us. You can leave now."He did no

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 6 Slowly, Life Moved Forward

During the first month after I moved abroad, I barely got a full night's sleep.Rosalie's condition was worse than the doctors had initially expected. During the day, she seemed relatively calm, but something always went wrong at night. Sometimes she would lie there with her eyes closed, tears slipping down her cheeks as she repeated the same sentence over and over. "My sister isn't like that… She's not…"I would sit beside her bed, holding her hand and calling her name again and again, but she seemed unable to wake up no matter how hard I tried.During the day, I accompanied her to her examinations. At night, I stayed by her side. I was even afraid to stop and wash my face in case I missed something important. When we first arrived abroad, my command of the local language was not fluent enough for me to handle all the hospital procedures on my own. The medical terminology was especially difficult. Whenever the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen while frantically ta

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 5 The Truth Comes to Light

When Charles arrived at the hospital, the hospital room was already empty. The nurse looked up at him. "You're too late. The family just finished the paperwork, and the patient was transferred to another hospital.""Where?""I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that."He stood in the doorway, his expression growing grimmer by the second. He pulled out his phone and called my number. The only thing that came through the receiver was a mechanical female voice. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Next, he went to the place where I had been staying. The landlord was crouched by the doorway, sorting vegetables. When Charles asked about me, the landlord answered him without even looking up. "She already moved out. She already returned the keys. Didn't even have time to collect her deposit. She left in a hurry."Charles stood outside the empty apartment for a long time, unable to say a word. But the scandal back home did not die down just because I had left.At first, th
