Chapter 10

Author: SPD
Just as I expected, the company Jessica had launched made a splashy debut with a grand opening ceremony. However, barely any businesses were willing to work with her.

At first, a few small firms reached out out of respect for the Dawson family, hoping to explore potential partnerships.

But Jessica looked down on them, even insulting them to their faces.

"You think you're qualified to be here? You can't even offer a decent investment amount."

Word spread quickly. Before long, Jessica's company found itself isolated, with a distinct sense of coldness pervading the office environment.

At first, Wilson was still riding high on her status, proud and smug. But as day after day passed with no revenue, he started to panic too.

"Jessica, maybe we should take on some smaller projects? No matter what, we'd at least have some cash flow…" Wilson cautiously suggested.

But before he could finish, Jessica cut him off, her expression dark and stormy.

"Wilson, are you saying I'm going to fail?

Jessica thought back to when they first met.Wilson was just a junior assistant back then. He stood there in his plain clothes, looking stubborn but pitiful. He didn't care for luxury or vanity. She had been deeply drawn to that clean, untainted air he carried. She thought he was the true love of her life.Wilson spat on the ground. "Who doesn't love money? You think I'd even flirt with you if you were broke? Stop dreaming! Rot here by yourself if you want."He straightened his wrinkled shirt and turned to leave. With the bruises on his body, he could still cry to Amelia for sympathy. There might still be hope for their relationship. But just as he reached the door, two police officers blocked his way."Sir, based on the testimony from the suspects in the 1st March break-in at the Dawson residence, you're a person of interest. Please come with us."Wilson panicked instantly. "N-No, it had nothing to do with me…"Behind him, Jessica's voice cracked with fury."So it was you!

Jessica pulled Wilson up and snapped at our parents, her voice sharp with defiance."That's enough. Stop begging them. If this is what family looks like, we're better off without it. Wilson, let's go."I turned away, disgust rising in my throat. I couldn't stand to watch their act of devotion any longer. In my previous life, when Jessica tortured me to death, she kept saying, "Wilson's suicide note said it was all your plan! You staged everything just to get me away from him so you could hurt him. You're the vicious one who killed Wilson and ruined Mom."Back then, I'd believed she was merely a victim of Wilson's deception. But now, it seemed that she never wanted to face the truth. She refused to admit that all of this started because of her. She'd wanted me dead from the very beginning. Once she killed me, she was finally at peace."Stop right there!" Dad's voice rang out, cold and sharp. "If you're walking out, then leave with nothing. Don't think about taking a single cent

Jessica immediately pointed at me and complained, "This is all Theodore's fault! He's just jealous of Wilson. He staged that break-in himself to frame Wilson!""That's enough!" Mom cut her off coldly. "The one who made a mistake is you. You disregarded your own family's safety for a man. Jessica, I'm so disappointed in you."After Mom got hurt, she called Jessica multiple times, but Jessica never picked up.Even in her half-conscious state, Mom remembered hearing a call from the intruders to Jessica.Jessica's response had been cold."Kill them if you want. Just stop bothering Wilson and me. We're watching the meteor shower. What a buzzkill."Being treated with such cold indifference by her own daughter completely broke Mom's heart. Jessica's expression darkened, but she still wore that same smug, self-righteous face. She lifted her chin and snapped, "What are the odds? I had just left with a few people, and the next thing you know, intruders break in and try to kill you. M

Wilson wrapped his arms around Jessica."Please don't fight with Theodore because of me. It breaks my heart…"Jessica immediately turned and glared at me. Her face twisted with undisguised disgust."Why can't you just accept Wilson? He's so kind, so gentle! As my brother, shouldn't you be grateful he's trying to protect me? Get up and apologize to him right now!"She suddenly grabbed my wrist and yanked me off the hospital bed—a searing pain shot through my injured left leg. The barely healed bone felt like it was splitting in two.I fell hard to the ground, hands bracing against the cold tiles. A sharp, grating buzz filled my ears.Jessica stood over me, her voice like ice. "Get up! Apologize to Wilson!"I glanced up at her with a sneer. The anger boiling within me threatened to consume the last vestiges of my rationality. "Jessica, I really want to know. He's just some outsider you've known for a few months. What's so great about him that you'd throw away everything betwee

I clenched my fists, standing stiffly outside the operating room. My whole body strung taut like a bow on the verge of snapping.I heard quiet footsteps behind me. Amelia had come after me.She glanced at my leg and said softly, "Theodore, your injury is serious. At least let the doctor take a look. I can keep an eye on the surgery for you…""No one asked for your help."I glared at her, eyes bloodshot. "I'd worry even more if you're here!"Her face went pale. She didn't say another word.Standing beside me, Amelia took out her phone and called Jessica, urging her to come back. The hallway was silent. I could even hear Jessica's impatient voice on the phone."You're buying into Theodore's lies too? He has been a liar since he was a kid. Now he's gone so far as to make up some ridiculous story just to trick me into coming home."Amelia's voice turned anxious. "You need to come back now. There really were intruders. Your mom and Theodore were both hurt!"Jessica let out a scorn

The officer's voice came through the phone, loud and clear. Amelia's smile froze on her face."Something really happened at his house? Is Mrs. Dawson seriously injured?"Her question confirmed that she was speaking to the police.Ignoring the searing pain, I struggled to get up and snatched the phone from her hand, only to fall back down hard.I didn't care about my injuries. I gripped the phone tightly and asked anxiously, "Officer, how's my mom? Where is she hurt?""Her injuries are serious, mainly to the head and abdomen. She's lost a lot of blood. We're rushing her to the hospital. Please get there as soon as possible."Hearing that Mom was severely injured, it felt like something had torn straight through my chest. I bit down hard on my lip. I couldn't stop the tears from falling.Amelia stayed silent. After a long pause, she finally spoke, her voice conveying guilt."Theodore, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have doubted you.""Sorry? What the hell is that supposed to fix? My mom

The butler beside Amelia had watched me grow up. He felt a hint of sympathy and said, "Ms. Johnson, please, at least bring someone to take a look. Mr. Theodore wouldn't lie about something like this."Amelia hesitated for a moment. I seized the moment and kept begging her. My voice cracked as I said, "Please, please. I'm begging you. Save my mom!"Amelia finally spoke, her tone still indifferent."I'll take a few men and check it out. But Theodore, if this turns out to be some stunt you orchestrated, I'll make you pay for it."I looked up sharply, a glimmer of hope lighting in my eyes. It didn't matter what she thought, as long as she was willing to go.She turned to call over a few bodyguards. But just then, her phone rang.It was Jessica. Amelia gave me a quick glance and put the call on speaker.Jessica's lazy, indifferent voice came through."Theodore didn't come to you, did he? Don't listen to a word he says. Someone just called me using Mom's phone, threatening to ki

However, there was no time to waste. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself up and ran toward the Johnson residence next door with everything I had.I didn't care that the icy snow tore at the raw flesh on my frostbitten feet. All I could do was run.Even though it was called next door, it was still a full mile away. The freezing air cut at my throat like blades. I didn't dare slow down as I remembered that more than one man had broken into our house in my previous life. When I collapsed in front of the Johnson residence's iron gate, I pounded on it with all my might and shouted hoarsely, "Amelia! Open up! Please, help! There are intruders in my house. Please save my mom!"The iron gate creaked open. Amelia Johnson stood in the doorway, her brows furrowed. She was wrapped in a thick cashmere coat, but her face held no warmth.Looking down at me kneeling in the snow, she slowly said, "Theodore, your acting has really improved lately."Her voice was laced with mockery, with a hint of
