Chapter 1

Thud!

My canvas backpack fell to the ground.

When I bent down to pick it up, a doctor's appointment sheet landed right next to my feet. I took a glimpse.

The time of conception was three months ago.

At that time, Ian Gambino, my boyfriend, told me that he was out on a mission. He would often only reply to my messages once every few days. There was one time when we were on a video call that I saw scratches on his back when he turned around to change his top.

"I accidentally hurt myself while protecting the Don," he replied.

I saw a hint of panic in his gaze as he added, "Vivian, you've been with me for so many years. Have you ever seen me with anyone else?"

I trusted him. I even apologized to him, saying that I was just too sensitive.

I no longer needed to guess how he got those scratches anymore.

The woman accepted the appointment slip from me and thanked me.

Seeing me standing there, she asked, "Are you here to look for Ian as well?"

I nodded, feeling my throat close up. I could not find a single word.

"Let's head to the VIP lounge together. My husband's a workaholic. He takes a long time to finish up sometimes."

The word 'husband' was like a knife cutting my heart open.

In the lounge, she introduced herself to me.

She was Jeanine Santoro, the heiress of the Santoro family, and also officially the Donna of the Gambino family.

"My husband might have a sharp tongue, but he's got a soft heart. He always says that he's busy with the family business, but he would prefer to oversee all doctor's appointments with me."

Jeanine smiled and added, "He said he wanted to give me and the child the best."

I hugged my backpack tightly. My knuckles turned white.

I had been with Ian for five years. He said that he was a bodyguard, on call 24 hours a day. With the only remaining time we had left, we lived in a tiny rented place, eating cheap and fast food. He said that he was never really 'off-the-clock', so he could not give me the stability that I needed.

I trusted him.

I trusted all his troubles. I felt sorry for his situation. I had been keeping the relationship warm. I had waited for five years.

The sound of footsteps came through the door. A few men in black surrounding Ian entered together with him.

He had a satin box in his hands. I had never seen him with such regality.

One of his soldati lowered his head and said, "Donna Jeanine, Don Ian put in a bid for this sapphire necklace. He said that he wanted to give it to you."

Jeanine flung herself into Ian's arms. "Honey, I've been waiting a long time."

Ian hugged her around the waist and handed her the box. When he lowered his head, he accidentally noticed me.

His face stiffened, but it was only for a second before he immediately went back to normal. He said with an indifferent tone as if he were talking to a stranger, "Why are you here?"

Jeanine turned to look at him and asked, "Honey, who is she?"

His soldati immediately chimed in, "An old acquaintance."

Ian took a step forward, blocking me from her sight. "Just someone I got to know a long time ago. It's nothing important."

Then, he instructed his soldati, "Please escort this lady out."

I froze on the spot, watching the man in front of me pretending not to know me. The ache in my heart spread all over my body.

He said that once he found his footing, he was going to marry me. He told me to wait a while longer. He said that he only wanted me.

It turned out that it was not that he could not give me what I wanted. He just did not want to.

A soldato came forward to invite me to leave.

Ian did not look at me after that. With an arm around Jeanine's waist, he said, "Darling, let's go. The necklace suits your gown today."

When they walked past me, Jeanine turned back to look at me before saying, "Honey, I don't think it's nice to leave your friend here."

He kept his gaze away from me. "She's just an acquaintance I barely knew."

My tears instantly fell.

We were together for five years. Five years of long-distance relationship. I quit my job and travelled thousands of kilometers only for him to call me an acquaintance that he barely knew.

In my phone, I still had the message he sent to me three days ago.

[Vivian, wait for me just a little longer. Once I'm done, I'll take you away. I'll give you a home.]

I had given up everything based on his promise. I never expected that, right from the beginning, I was just the idiot in his entire scheme.

Ian stood like a soulless statue under the lights of the venue. The servers did not dare to approach him. The passing wealthy and dignitaries only glanced at him from the sight.True despair was when even the right to ask someone to stay had been lost. His underboss went up to him and asked if he should head back. Ian nodded and stepped into the night. His back still remained looking regal, yet every step he took was like stepping on knives barefoot.Outside the car window, the city lights rushed past in a blur. The city was dazzling and prosperous, yet not a single piece of that light belonged to him.He returned to his empty private mention. There were still signs of Vivian from the few days that she stayed there. He had fantasized countless times that once everything calmed down, once he had settled everything, he would get her and protect her for the rest of her life.Only until he lost her did he realize that some mistakes were permanent. He occasionally would head to the

At the afterparty after the awards ceremony, Henry held my hand tightly, never once letting go.He had volunteered to drink on my behalf, blocking me from all the unnecessary disturbance."Are you tired? Shall we head to the balcony to get some air?"I nodded and turned around when the entrance to the venue was suddenly quiet for a moment.A figure stood there silently. I almost forgot what he looked like.It was Ian.He still looked as regal as before in his custom-made black suit. He was tall and composed, carrying a demanding presence. However, his icy gaze barely had any light in them anymore. He was looking right at me.He was still the high and mighty Don of the Gambino family, but his bloodshot eyes told me that he had not had a good night's sleep in a very long time.Henry subconsciously pushed me behind him half a step, tightening his grip on my hand. He was silently telling me, "Don't be afraid. I'm here."Ian came closer. He looked at my face before his gaze moved

When I opened my eyes once more, all I saw was the white and spotless ceiling.I was rescued by the research team. The moment Vivian's men threw me into the open sea, the extraction ship that was waiting beforehand pulled me back from the hands of death. After traveling through several countries under careful escort, I finally arrived at the International Biological Research Headquarters in North Orope. My mentor was a titan in the field. She had never gotten married and had no children, yet she always treated me like her own daughter. She never asked about my past.Instead, she simply patted my shoulder gently and said, "Your battlefield is in the laboratory. It has nothing to do with anyone else."During the month I spent recovering, a man named Henry Creek stayed by my side. I knew my mentor had sent the person she trusted the most to look after me.He was the institute's chief researcher, and he was three years older than me. He was clean and gentle, and he always carried t

Ian's search for me had driven him to the point of near madness. Finally, in a narrow crevice among the offshore rocks, he found a single white canvas shoe.It was thin and clean, the edge still speckled with mud. It was the exact pair I was wearing when I disappeared. He would recognize it anywhere.Without hesitation, he ordered all the soldati who were on duty at the dock that day to be detained and dragged into the interrogation room. There was no patience for negotiation.Within minutes, the soldati bought off by Vivian collapsed on the floor in terror, confessing everything."It was Donna Jeanine. She was the one who ordered us to throw Ms. Walker into the ocean.""Don Ian, you told us to lock her up, but Donna Jeanine said that you did not want to see Ms. Walker ever again. She privately instructed us to do so.""The kidnapping by the docks was a ruse. Donna Jeanine planned it all to frame Ms. Walker…"Every sentence was a blow to Ian's nerves. In the coat I had left

Ian stumbled a step back. The cigarette in between his fingers had burned his skin, yet he did not feel it at all.He never thought that I would truly vanish. In his heart, I was just a lady from deep in the rural mountains. Even if I threw a tantrum, or if I was feeling aggrieved, I would still wait for him to return. All he did was just lock me up for a few days. He wanted to wait until the pressure from the elders subsided before getting her. Then, he would explain everything to me and apologize. He never thought that he would lose me.With trembling hands, he picked up his phone. He frantically opened his conversation with me.The last message from me was a few days after the auction.[I'm not coming back.]Before he could type anything, he was blasted with notifications about the trending headlines once more.[Mistress Vivian Walker Admits Fault][Gambino Family Stock Stabilizes][Gambino-Santoro Marriage Alliance Solidified]It was one scandalizing headline after the

I stayed in the mansion like a soulless, hollowed shell for the next two days, quietly waiting. Two days later, a black sedan appeared by the gates of the mansion right on time. When the car arrived at the docks, the surroundings were eerily empty with only a few battered fishing boats in sight. Before I could react, a few masked men suddenly rushed over and pounced on Jeanine. They pretended to kidnap her. Jeanine's screams echoed in the seabreeze with utter terror. In the midst of chaos, I fought with all my might. I wanted to break free and call out to Jeanine, but everything was in vain.Right at that moment, a loud car honk pierced through the air. Ian had arrived in a hurry with a troop of his bodyguards. When he spotted me, he paused for a moment. His gaze gleamed with mixed emotions."Jeanine!"He pulled Jeanine into his arms, carefully checking up on her. He worriedly asked, "How are you? Are you hurt? Is the child fine?"Jeanine buried herself in his arms, sobbing.
