“Is this really necessary?” I pouted as I felt the heavy robe draped over my shoulders. It was not only heavy, but I felt like I was in a sauna.

“It’s traditional. All of the crowned royals wore this robe.” Lyle’s blue eyes sparkled in amusement as I grumbled. “The weight represents the burden of leadership. Besides, you look rather fetching in it. Like a true queen.”

“A sweaty, irritable queen,” I muttered, but then a realization came over me. “It’s never been washed … has it?”

Lyle boomed out

My Pap had successful surgery on Friday. He should be coming home tomorrow! Thank you all so much for your well thoughts and wishes. Now an update on me. I have been having extreme fatigue. The flu doesn't just take you down for a week. Even when you think it is over it has lagging symptoms which I guess last longer for some than others. Lucky me! I'm trying to get back into my groove, but the tiredness has really dragged me down. Having said that I'm going to aim for 2 more updates this week. Thank you all for being patient with me!

Great news on your Pap. You take care of yourself and don't push it. Let your body recover. Thanks for the chapter. I wonder whose eyes those are?

Allissa“I said cannot, vampire. Not will not.” He looked at Darren. “We keep knowledge. Knowledge that is sometimes given and sometimes taken. But that work comes to us, and it sometimes comes with an oath. This one has an oath with one line in it that has never been broken by any drow living or dead. We do not speak of hell’s open door. Not for gold. Not for kin. Not for a queen with fire in her hands.” He looked at me and I knew he knew about my fire. He sensed it already.“So you know where it is,” Darren said.“I did not say that either.”“Then what did you say?”“I said what I am permitted to say.”Darren stood up. He d

AllissaThe drow do not have a front door. What they have is a crack in a hillside that you would walk past a hundred times, and a staircase going down inside it that somebody cut a very long time ago. Finn found it without slowing down. He has been here before and he did not say when.“Rules,” he said at the top of the stairs. “Do not offer anything. Do not promise anything. Do not thank anyone.”“Don’t thank them?”“Thanks is an admission of debt. They are tricky like that.”“Wonderful,” Lyle said. “I have never once gotten through a conversation without saying thank you. I am going to be owned by nightfall.”“Then do not speak,” Dayanara said.“That is worse.”“Worse for who?” Ivan chuckled.“Sven wouldn’t do that to us,” I said.Finn sighed and turned around to look at me.“Sven is not the only one in charge down there.” He waited until he was sure I had heard that part. “You do not want to make this hard for him, do you? So do as I say. We are not going to hand them a reason to t

AllissaThat morning when I woke up the pebble was warm. I guess it was because I was lying on it.I had a whole speech worked out while I lay awake before everyone else, a careful one with the word probably in it more than once. Then Darren looked at me and I could see the question already sitting in his eyes. He had felt it through the bond.“Something in me is pulling south.”So much for the speech. He sat up. Everybody sat up. Finn was awake before the sentence finished, because Finn is always awake.“Pulling,” Darren said.“Last night. I was doing what Thorin told me to do, sitting with my palms together, and something under my sternum leaned.” I pressed my hand flat over the spot. “South. Not a feeling. A direction.”His face did something I did not like. Not anger but concern.“Does it hurt?”“No.”“Allissa.”“It doesn’t. And I would tell you.” I made myself hold his eyes. “I am telling you, aren’t I? I am not hiding anything from you. I promise.”He nodded his head but I could

AllissaThe door clicked, and the world went down to one room.He didn’t rush at me. He stood there in the lamplight and looked at me like a man checking that a thing was still where he left it, and then he crossed the room and kissed me slow, and it stayed slow.I pulled back half a breath and tried to hand him my terrible practical gift.“If a year is what we get,” I said, “then I want to fill it. I want nights stacked so deep that if it comes for me early I’ll have already had—”“No.” He stopped the rest of it with his thumb across my lips, and the look that came down over his face was the one his enemies get. “You will not ration yourself to me, Allissa. I am not stockpiling my mate against a winter. I am keeping her.”Something that had been standing at attention in me since a frost-bitten nursery finally stood down.Later, in the dark, with my hands flat on his chest, he caught one of them and turned it over and looked at the heat living under the skin there. I braced without me

AllissaThe council that evening was short, because the road had already chosen most of it for us.Darren laid it out plainly. The door, the realm, the fires, the year that might be less. He wanted everyone to know exactly where we would be going. They needed to know the risks. Then he looked around the table at the people he intended to take into hell, and not one of them let him finish the asking.“Well you are going to need some brains and muscle on this trip. Never been a fan of the heat but you are going to need me beside you on this trip.” Ivan looked at Darren and then at me. “There is no place I would rather be. If you two are heading to the fires of hell then I’ll bring the marshmallows.”“I promised three children I would bring their parents

AllissaMy buttons were already going. He worked them loose with that maddening patience of his, mouth traveling my throat, and when the dress finally hit the floor he stepped back to look, the way he always does, like the view is new every single time.“Gods, look at you.”“You saw me this morning during the shower.”“I will look again tonight.” His eyes came up to mine, already going black. “And tomorrow. And every day I can steal a moment, and every year for eternity, so get used to being stared at, baby.”I got his shirt off him and put my hands on all of it, the chest, the ridged stomach, and my mate stood still under my hands the way he stands still for nobody else alive. Then I went lower and
