Chapter 2 Abuse

Author: Lynn Jayne
I returned to the princess' residence.

Before I could even catch my breath, Alicia came at me with a kick. Though she was sitting in a wheelchair, the force of her presence had not diminished in the slightest.

She wrapped her hand around my neck, her eyes sharp. "You went after Yves again? I told you. If anything happens to him, I'll make you pay a hundred times over."

My consciousness was fading, and tears from the pain spilled from my eyes.

She sneered and flung me away.

My forehead hit the edge of my bed, and blood spilled.

Alicia froze for a moment. She seemed as though she wanted to help me up, but when she noticed my dead, indifferent gaze, her hand slowly fell back to her side. "I was only out for five days, and you barged into his yard and tossed his pendant into the lake? If I had come home any later, you'd have turned this whole place into a mess!"

She was still chastising me. I thought about my poor daughter. She was only three, and Yves Samson killed her before she could even see the world properly.

I wanted to explain.

But when I met Alicia's furious gaze, I swallowed every word back down. She would not believe me. She never had.

As usual, I knelt and lowered my head. "I'm sorry, princess."

She looked at my pale face and frowned. The old me would have denied things I had not done, but what use had that ever been?

When Yves had nightmares, he told her I got a priest to curse him because I was jealous. Alicia made me kneel in the snow for an entire day, until I developed a fever and collapsed unconscious.

Another time, he drank too much because he could not control himself, then told her I had forced him to drink.

Back then, I was still ill with a cold. Even so, she forced alcohol down my throat for the entire night, not stopping until I went into shock.

This time, Yves rode a horse into my yard, crushed my mother's pendant, and pushed my daughter into the lake. Then, he told everyone it had been an accident. That I had been careless and failed to watch her properly.

This woman sentenced me without even asking. Of course. She still had no idea that our daughter was dead.

Alicia gave me a once-over and sneered. "And where did you learn this from, Michael? No one's buying it. You bully him, and by doing so, you insult me. Do you really think I still love you, Michael?"

She pulled me up, her eyes filled with ice-cold fury and hatred. Then she dragged me away in a hurry, not caring that I was still weak from days of mourning and hunger.

She dragged me all the way to Yves' room.

The moment Yves saw my dishevelled figure, he, pretended to be surprised. Then he threw himself into Alicia's arms. "Why did you bring the prince consort here? I told you I don't mind. It's just a pendant. If he wanted it, he could have had it.

"Well, it was supposed to be your birthday present, but now it's gone. Oh dear. What should we do now?"

His hostility was aimed straight at me. I saw the malice hidden in his eyes.

Alicia sneered. "You tossed the pendant into the lake. So, you will retrieve it yourself, Michael."

It was late autumn. And my body had never been able to withstand that kind of cold.

"I'll make it up to you, Michael. I promise." Alicia kneeled before me, striking herself again and again. "This is my fault. If I hadn't been so stubborn, none of this would've happened. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please, forgive me, Michael.""No, I will not forgive you," I said coldly. After all, this woman killed my whole family and tormented me for three years. None of that could ever be undone, and yet she still had the nerve to ask for forgiveness. The anticipation in her eyes died out. She remained kneeling there, her heart seemingly sinking into hopelessness. "I'll do anything," she said hoarsely. "As long as you'll forgive me."I pulled my sleeve out of her grasp. "I'll never forgive you unless you die!"She closed her eyes, and when she opened them, she smiled and looked at me. "I will. If that will make you happy, I'll do it. I owe you that much.""Then, what are you waiting for?" I asked. She shook her head. "I can take my own life, but I can't leave you alone. I've g

  • A Marriage Built on Hate   Chapter 10 Woken Up

Alicia had just arrived outside the empress dowager's bedchambers when she overheard her mother speaking to a maidservant."Empress Dowager, our men didn't see Michael. Do you think he's having second thoughts about leaving?""Curse that wretch. I was going to get rid of him, but he managed to escape! Alicia can't bring herself to kill him! That man nearly ruined her claim to the throne. If she knows the truth, I…""You only did it for her claim to the throne. Even if she knows you orchestrated the assassination, she'll understand where you're coming from."Outside the door, Alicia froze. She could not believe what she had just heard. Her mother truly orchestrated the whole thing. Her hatred toward me had been for nothing. Everything she had clung to for the past three years suddenly felt like a cruel joke. She kicked the door open, and her mother was shocked. She stared at Alicia in silence for a long, long time.Alicia moved forward step by step. Her mother sighed. "You heard

The fact that I took my own life without any hesitation nearly made Alicia's heart stop. She lunged forward and caught me in her arms. "Get the imperial healer!" She roared at the guards. "Go!" Then she looked down at me, her voice trembling despite herself. "Hang in there, Michael. You'll be fine."I had already lost consciousness. But Alicia kept muttering to herself, tears spilling down her face as though she truly cared about me.Yves froze. The words I had spoken before I collapsed kept echoing in his mind, and unease finally began to creep over him. He carefully watched Alicia's expression, trying to figure out what she would do next. "I had no idea he hated me so much, princess. Even in death, he wanted to destroy…"Frustrated, Alicia shoved him away. "Scram!"He had never been treated like that by her before. For a moment, he froze again, but panic quickly surged through him. After all, the household knew he killed Hope. Still, he thought Alicia's longtime affection

She strode over to me and grabbed my hairpin. Even as it pierced her palm, she did not let go. She stared at me. "What are you doing? Do you really think I would just stand here and watch you die?"Her eyes were red with fury. I sneered. What a joke. "The man you love pushed our only daughter into the lake and let her drown. Do you have any idea what he did? The day you left the city, he rode a horse and barged into my yard."He took our girl from my hands and pushed her into the lake right in front of me! Then, he smashed the last thing my mother left for me! And do you know what he said? He said that even if I died, you wouldn't care. Let alone a child."I was reminded of that day, and I broke into maniacal laughter. Perhaps I really had gone mad after all.Shocked, Alicia stepped back, and she shook her head. "No. You're lying! This is a lie, Michael!"The sight of her losing her composure made me calm down instead. "I'm not. Our daughter is dead, and the killer is your belov

Yves lunged forward and shoved Alicia back. The headpin buried itself in Yves' shoulder instead. He fell into Alicia's arms and pointed at me in disbelief, his voice shrill and grating. "He's gone mad! He tried to kill you!"Alicia's eyes narrowed, and she seemed confused. "You tried to kill me… for her?"She looked at the man in her arms, then back at me, still glaring at her with murderous hatred. Fury and panic took over her heart. She pushed herself forward, grabbed me, and forced me to meet her eyes."You want to kill me?"She did not see that coming. I grabbed my headpin tightly and lashed out again. "You ruined everything I had, Alicia! Go to hell!"She grabbed my shoulder. "You owe me, and you want to kill me?" Her roar pierced my ears, but I laughed. What a joke. This woman had the gall to blame me when her own mother was the one who orchestrated that attack. They had paid no price at all. Meanwhile, my entire family had died for their scheme. I held on for so long a

I dreamed of flowers and Alicia. She stood near me, and when she saw me, a beautiful smile lit up her face.I approached her, and she gave me a hairpin. Her eyes were filled with something earnest. "Will you come with me, Michael?"In my dreams, I cried until my eyes were red, and I nodded. "I will."It had been an eternity since she smiled at me like that, but it was the same overly beautiful smile that told me this was just a dream.I was still in a daze, and someone seized my hand. My eyes openedAlicia was sitting beside my bed. Her brows were tightly furrowed, as though worry had become permanently etched into her face. Her grip on my hand was so strong that I could not pull away.It almost looked like she cared about me. When she realised I was awake, happiness flickered through her eyes, but she quickly forced it down and looked at me coldly. "You're awake."My whole body was in pain. Hoarsely, I asked, "Where's my sister, Alicia?"Her eyes darted away. She could not
