Chapter 1 True Evil

Author: Lynn Jayne
The empress dowager gave me a noncommittal look. remained kneeling on the ground.

A long while later, she said, "I can let you go, Michael. But remember this. Your sister is still in my hands. You will take that secret to your grave."

She gave me a warning look. I lowered my head, my heart already broken. "Of course, Your Majesty. The princess will never know the truth."

As though granting me some great mercy, she tossed a bottle of pills in front of me. They were meant to help me fake my death. "You cannot pin this on me. I would never have done this, but she would rather elope with you than run the empire. It's your fault you gained her attention!"

With that, she turned to leave. "Seven days later, Alicia will be going to the Imperial Temple with me. You will leave on that day."

I froze at those words. The Imperial Temple housed the statues of countless benevolent deities. It was also the place where I first met Alicia Zimmer.

I watched the empress dowager walk away and found the whole thing deeply ironic. Alicia had no idea that her supposedly benevolent mother was capable of deeds so vicious they would make even devils recoil.

Alicia was a princess from the previous dynasty. After her uncle usurped the throne, she and her mother escaped and planned for years just to regain power.

I thought she was just the daughter of a merchant when I met her, and that she was in the city to do business. She was a gallant and vivacious woman, different from the girls I knew.

I fell in love with her at first sight and decided to marry her. She too promised she would only marry me.

My father was a grand tutor. He refused to let me marry a woman of unknown origin, and he suspected that Alicia was far more than she claimed to be.

I went on a hunger strike.

In order to marry me, Alicia privately met with my father and told him the truth. She was the princess of the previous dynasty.

…

On the day we decided to elope, my father caught me at the corner of the road. He broke my legs, but still, I waited, yet Alicia never came.

It was after that I found out that after her identity was leaked, she was attacked.

Only through the sacrifice of her many subordinates did she escape. During the chaos, someone broke her legs as well, leaving her unable to walk properly ever since.

After leading her army into the imperial city, the first thing Alicia did was send my entire family to prison.

That day, she sat high on her horse and lifted my chin with the end of her whip. She sneered. "You should've seen this coming when your father decided to leak the information."

A new emperor was crowned, and she became princess regent.

However, my father was not behind it. I thought she would let my family go if I told her everything.

After that humiliating night, my family was sentenced to execution anyway, and they presented their heads to me.

Her mother came to me that day. "I orchestrated that escape. Everything is worth it for her rule. I can save your sister, on the condition that you take the fall. She has hated you all these years, and she won't listen to you anyway. You tried that."

She was right. Alicia wouldn't trust me. She took pleasure in humiliating me. Fortunately, it was all coming to an end.

Seven days later, I would be able to leave with my sister.

"I'll make it up to you, Michael. I promise." Alicia kneeled before me, striking herself again and again. "This is my fault. If I hadn't been so stubborn, none of this would've happened. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please, forgive me, Michael.""No, I will not forgive you," I said coldly. After all, this woman killed my whole family and tormented me for three years. None of that could ever be undone, and yet she still had the nerve to ask for forgiveness. The anticipation in her eyes died out. She remained kneeling there, her heart seemingly sinking into hopelessness. "I'll do anything," she said hoarsely. "As long as you'll forgive me."I pulled my sleeve out of her grasp. "I'll never forgive you unless you die!"She closed her eyes, and when she opened them, she smiled and looked at me. "I will. If that will make you happy, I'll do it. I owe you that much.""Then, what are you waiting for?" I asked. She shook her head. "I can take my own life, but I can't leave you alone. I've g

  • A Marriage Built on Hate   Chapter 10 Woken Up

Alicia had just arrived outside the empress dowager's bedchambers when she overheard her mother speaking to a maidservant."Empress Dowager, our men didn't see Michael. Do you think he's having second thoughts about leaving?""Curse that wretch. I was going to get rid of him, but he managed to escape! Alicia can't bring herself to kill him! That man nearly ruined her claim to the throne. If she knows the truth, I…""You only did it for her claim to the throne. Even if she knows you orchestrated the assassination, she'll understand where you're coming from."Outside the door, Alicia froze. She could not believe what she had just heard. Her mother truly orchestrated the whole thing. Her hatred toward me had been for nothing. Everything she had clung to for the past three years suddenly felt like a cruel joke. She kicked the door open, and her mother was shocked. She stared at Alicia in silence for a long, long time.Alicia moved forward step by step. Her mother sighed. "You heard

The fact that I took my own life without any hesitation nearly made Alicia's heart stop. She lunged forward and caught me in her arms. "Get the imperial healer!" She roared at the guards. "Go!" Then she looked down at me, her voice trembling despite herself. "Hang in there, Michael. You'll be fine."I had already lost consciousness. But Alicia kept muttering to herself, tears spilling down her face as though she truly cared about me.Yves froze. The words I had spoken before I collapsed kept echoing in his mind, and unease finally began to creep over him. He carefully watched Alicia's expression, trying to figure out what she would do next. "I had no idea he hated me so much, princess. Even in death, he wanted to destroy…"Frustrated, Alicia shoved him away. "Scram!"He had never been treated like that by her before. For a moment, he froze again, but panic quickly surged through him. After all, the household knew he killed Hope. Still, he thought Alicia's longtime affection

She strode over to me and grabbed my hairpin. Even as it pierced her palm, she did not let go. She stared at me. "What are you doing? Do you really think I would just stand here and watch you die?"Her eyes were red with fury. I sneered. What a joke. "The man you love pushed our only daughter into the lake and let her drown. Do you have any idea what he did? The day you left the city, he rode a horse and barged into my yard."He took our girl from my hands and pushed her into the lake right in front of me! Then, he smashed the last thing my mother left for me! And do you know what he said? He said that even if I died, you wouldn't care. Let alone a child."I was reminded of that day, and I broke into maniacal laughter. Perhaps I really had gone mad after all.Shocked, Alicia stepped back, and she shook her head. "No. You're lying! This is a lie, Michael!"The sight of her losing her composure made me calm down instead. "I'm not. Our daughter is dead, and the killer is your belov

Yves lunged forward and shoved Alicia back. The headpin buried itself in Yves' shoulder instead. He fell into Alicia's arms and pointed at me in disbelief, his voice shrill and grating. "He's gone mad! He tried to kill you!"Alicia's eyes narrowed, and she seemed confused. "You tried to kill me… for her?"She looked at the man in her arms, then back at me, still glaring at her with murderous hatred. Fury and panic took over her heart. She pushed herself forward, grabbed me, and forced me to meet her eyes."You want to kill me?"She did not see that coming. I grabbed my headpin tightly and lashed out again. "You ruined everything I had, Alicia! Go to hell!"She grabbed my shoulder. "You owe me, and you want to kill me?" Her roar pierced my ears, but I laughed. What a joke. This woman had the gall to blame me when her own mother was the one who orchestrated that attack. They had paid no price at all. Meanwhile, my entire family had died for their scheme. I held on for so long a

I dreamed of flowers and Alicia. She stood near me, and when she saw me, a beautiful smile lit up her face.I approached her, and she gave me a hairpin. Her eyes were filled with something earnest. "Will you come with me, Michael?"In my dreams, I cried until my eyes were red, and I nodded. "I will."It had been an eternity since she smiled at me like that, but it was the same overly beautiful smile that told me this was just a dream.I was still in a daze, and someone seized my hand. My eyes openedAlicia was sitting beside my bed. Her brows were tightly furrowed, as though worry had become permanently etched into her face. Her grip on my hand was so strong that I could not pull away.It almost looked like she cared about me. When she realised I was awake, happiness flickered through her eyes, but she quickly forced it down and looked at me coldly. "You're awake."My whole body was in pain. Hoarsely, I asked, "Where's my sister, Alicia?"Her eyes darted away. She could not
