Chapter 3

作者: Bright Lights
That said, Xir would just be a corpse when he arrived, but since they loved each other so much, Thea probably wouldn't mind.

And just as expected, Thea's eyes lit up, clearly convinced that she had stolen something I cared about.

She simply had no idea that Xir was nothing more than trash to me without his heart, and there was no point for me to keep him.

And if she liked him so much, she could have him.

On the other hand, Xir was still under the impression that I was just buying time, and snapped, "Don't think I'll fall in love with you in three days!"

I shrugged. "I don't need you to fall for me. I just need your heart."

Though I was myself convinced that I was being perfectly honest, neither of them believed me.

"Heh!" Xir snickered. "Is that not one and the same, woman? But since you're willing to let me go and treat my wounds, I don't mind being nice for three days."

As he finished and before I could react, Thea sniffed as she threw herself over Xir's shoulder, pouting miserably. "You won't fall for Lyra, would you? She has everything, but you're the only one I have."

Really?

It was true that I had everything at the beginning—loving parents, a life of luxury.

However, Thea had taken all of it from me since.

As soon as she showed up, I lost my room, while Father became a completely different man, and then I ended up disfigured.

Even if she wasn't biologically related to him, she still mattered more to him than me, his own daughter.

In fact, both of them acted as if my disfigurement was a perfectly reasonable sacrifice to save Thea.

I still remembered how after I was rushed to the hospital, Thea said it was boring and threw a tantrum for Father to take her to the amusement park.

Naturally, he was all too happy to do so, leaving me, a ten-year-old, alone at the hospital.

No one was there to take care of me even though I barely escaped death.

It was the nurse on duty who called Father because even she couldn't stand it. And being a teacher, his reputation mattered to him most of all, so he was suddenly the doting father again when the nurses were around.

However, as soon as they left, he was glaring at me in disgust as he snapped, "It's just a burn, how much can it hurt? You're just a child, but already such an attention seeker."

Those stinging words left me breathless.

He used to love and dote on me, while I was too young to understand why he changed so dramatically.

I was even convinced that he was upset that I didn't take good care of Thea, only to find out much later on he had only married my mother for her money.

That was why he maintained the disguise of a loving father when my mother was still alive, and bared his true colors once she died.

If my mother didn't make it very clear in her will that I wasthe one who would inherit all her fortune, that two-faced dirtbag would have handed everything to Thea gift-wrapped.

-

"That won't happen, Thea. You're the only one for me."

Xir's words yanked me back to reality and saw that they were cuddling again before I knew it.

Oh, such love.

I checked the time, and decided to interrupt them, "It's time to take your potion, Xir."

Xir's lips curled up in turn. "How obsessed can you be, Lyra? Still worried about the potion now? Are you going to tell us to use protection when I make love to Thea too?"

I raised a brow.

What?

Humans… could procreate with fish?

Shrugging, I said, "Probably not."

Xir chuckled, thinking that I was just lying out of stubbornness.

After all, he was convinced I'd do anything for him.

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 11

Oh, such ill-fated lovers they were.Still, I hid a smile as I shot back, "Really? Then why was I told that you'd reached out to an overseas buyer so you could pay off your high-interest loans?""H-How'd you know that?" Thea blurted, and quickly tried to clasp her hand over her mouth, but it was already too late.Behind her, Xir screamed shrilly, "What?!" I frowned—the damned fish really wouldn't shut up even in death.Still, I continued, "Once you took Xir to your place, you'd then sell him in a couple of months. Shame your plan fell short because he's dead now… In fact, didn't you come back because you realized that merfolk corpses sell well too?"It was information brought to me by a private detective while I was at the hospital. And to think I bought it at first, when it was only Xir who actually fell in love.As for Thea, she gave up on pretending, seeing that she was caught dead to rights."Why ask if you knew already?" Looking at Xir's corpse, she clicked her tongue.

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 10

Xir's ghost kept darting everywhere around me, yapping and buzzing like a relentless fly.So, he had actually seen the things I had done for him? Still, I guess over time, he got used to that and convinced himself it was his right. That was why that sticker Thea had given like an afterthought was more valuable to him.Livestock will always be livestock, as they say.On the other hand, Thea kept repeating, "No, that's impossible…"She was convinced she beat me, only for everything to turn out to be a pitfall I set, and she jumped in it willingly.Holding her gaze, I continued, "Also, I've called the cops, since you were using visiting Xir as an excuse to steal personal property amounting to millions… Or did you think that I would let that slide?"I slammed the evidence I had on the table, and she paled as she looked at it.She screamed and tried to run outside, but I caught her. Pinching my nose, I asked, "Aren't you taking your stinking fish with you? I promised you the oth

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 9

I watched them, waiting for the perfect opportunity. When it arrived, I leapt forward in a single stride, plunging the knife into his chest and twisting my wrist.A perfect heart was exposed, but I was so fast they didn't even have time to react."Are you crazy?!" Xir exclaimed in shock when he realized that I had just taken his heart. However, it happened in the blink of an eye. By the time he could gather his thoughts enough to take back his heart, I'd already put it in a security briefcase and sped straight to the hospital. All he could do was stare blankly at the gaping hole in his chest, still confused about why I had done that, his life draining away amidst fear and bewilderment. Was it all because he didn't love me?"Argh!!!"As for Thea, she screamed in terror when she saw Xir bleeding profusely beneath her, and bolted.Nonetheless, Xir's ghost remained bound to his body, floating in the air while he watched his own corpse rot and stink in the expensive water tank.

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 8

Xir began, "Thea and I just agreed that I will move to her place in two days, but her place is too small and doesn't have a tank. Moreover, she can't afford to sustain our lifestyle on her meager salary, so give her your shares. Just 25%—it's not that much anyway.""25%?!" I blurted in disbelief.Who on earth gave them the audacity to demand 25% of my company shares?Still, as soon as Xir sensed my disapproval, he snapped impatiently, "You're not short on money. So what if you shared some with Thea? How are we going to survive if you don't give us the money? She has a claim anyway, and you're just returning the money to the rightful owner."I laughed despite myself—these two worms were still insatiable even on the final day."Do you understand how much is 25%?" I asked Xir nonetheless. However, his patience was exhausted from just a single question. "This isn't up for discussion! This is just for your information!"I sighed, knowing what else was coming if I kept refusing. "Fine

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 7

However, I was too busy thinking about my conversation with Dr. King to pay much attention to what Thea was saying. He insisted that I must extract the heart when the merfolk were at their happiest moment, so I couldn't help wondering when Xir was happiest. There was nothing to lose anyway, so I asked Thea, "Do you know what makes Xir the happiest?"The timing of the question was just as surprising as the question itself.Soon, however, Thea was smiling knowingly. She thought I did care about Xir after all—I was just too devastated to react. Smugly crossing her legs, she scoffed with a taunting edge in her voice, "When he makes love to me, of course."I see. When I got home, I asked Xir the same question. "What makes you the happiest?"Xir rolled his eyes at me. "It's already been a day—stop trying to charm me, I'd never fall for you."While I found it laughably stupid the way he thought the world of himself, I mustered my patience and asked again, "Just answer my question."

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 6

The next day, I just reached my office when my phone started ringing.I just answered it when Xir snapped haughtily, "Come home right now!""What is it? I'm at work," I replied with a hint of exasperation—heaven knows what else he was up to this time. Naturally, just the hint of refusal sent him flying to a rage. "Come back right now or I won't take the potion!""Fine," I replied, sighing. There were just two days left—I couldn't afford to screw up now.Still, when I got home, I saw that Thea was there too. "What are you doing here?" I asked. "I arranged a job for you."She yawned, stretching her arms nonchalantly. "You own the company, don't you? So what if I didn't work? Just pay me normally." Xir nodded in agreement. "That's right. I have proper business with Thea, go stand outside.""Will you take your potion properly if I do that?" I asked. He smiled gleefully seeing that I was so concerned about his health. "Yes. If you get your act together."Hearing that was good
