Chapter 2

作者: Bright Lights
And as Thea continued, she pretended to sob, "I'm very sad too, but I was just a child and couldn't do anything. That's why I've worked like a slave for you over the years, forfeiting my claim to the family's fortune to atone…"

Pained, Xir pursed his lips as he held Thea, before turning sharply on me. "Thea had already slaved away for you to atone, even letting you take all the money! Isn't that enough?"

I was once again amused.

The so-called family's fortune was my mother's possessions and had nothing to do with Thea at all.

Also, slave away? Thea?

It was me who was serving her beck and call all the time—my father made me do so, even after I was burnt.

Moreover…

"What does my mother's fortune have to do with you?" I shot back. "Are you my mother's child too?"

Thea stopped sobbing as she knew she was caught dead to rights.

In reality, she wanted my mother's money too, but she simply had no claim, and now played as if she was conceding it to me out of generosity.

Moreover, a mere merman like Xir naturally won't understand human laws, only that his beloved human was given grief.

"I never knew how selfish you could be!" He snapped. "Even if Thea isn't your mother's child, she's still your sister! Can't you be more sisterly? She already suffered so much! Can't you see that she's crying?!"

I looked at Thea as she stayed in Xir's arms, wondering how much she really suffered.

Even if she did, it was none of my fault.

However, Xir was smacking the water repeatedly with his blue-scaled tail as a threat.

Seeing that he was really angry, I remembered reading that the merfolk's mood affected the medicinal value of their hearts.

And there was just three days left—I couldn't afford to screw up now.

Taking a deep breath and mustering a smile I think looks friendly, I said, "Please don't get angry."

That was the best I could do, as I was no charmer like Thea and even poorer with words.

Still, seeing that I caved, Xir was at once smug. "Then free me. I'm leaving with Thea! Then I won't be angry…"

Thea looked up at him, her eyes welling with emotion. "Oh, Xir…"

With that, they looked deep into each other's eyes like I wasn't in the room.

In reality, I was myself confused why Thea was attracted to Xir—he was just a pet at best, no different from an animal.

But Thea's presence calmed him, and that worked for me.

That was why I have no intention of interfering with their 'sacred' love.

"You're still hurt. If you leave now without the potion I made for you, your skin and scales will start to rot."

What I didn't tell him is that the medicinal value of his heart would drop if I didn't extract it while his body was still intact.

Naturally, Xir had no idea, and merely thought that I was reluctant to let him leave.

Snorting as he turned away, he huffed, "You just don't want me to leave!"

Thea naturally thought so too, and chimed in innocently, "Come on, sis. If you really love Xir, you should let him go."

Love?

How many times did I have to tell them that I only wanted his heart?

They simply wouldn't believe me.

Sighing, I said, "Three days. Just give me three days, and I will send him to your home."

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 11

Oh, such ill-fated lovers they were.Still, I hid a smile as I shot back, "Really? Then why was I told that you'd reached out to an overseas buyer so you could pay off your high-interest loans?""H-How'd you know that?" Thea blurted, and quickly tried to clasp her hand over her mouth, but it was already too late.Behind her, Xir screamed shrilly, "What?!" I frowned—the damned fish really wouldn't shut up even in death.Still, I continued, "Once you took Xir to your place, you'd then sell him in a couple of months. Shame your plan fell short because he's dead now… In fact, didn't you come back because you realized that merfolk corpses sell well too?"It was information brought to me by a private detective while I was at the hospital. And to think I bought it at first, when it was only Xir who actually fell in love.As for Thea, she gave up on pretending, seeing that she was caught dead to rights."Why ask if you knew already?" Looking at Xir's corpse, she clicked her tongue.

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 10

Xir's ghost kept darting everywhere around me, yapping and buzzing like a relentless fly.So, he had actually seen the things I had done for him? Still, I guess over time, he got used to that and convinced himself it was his right. That was why that sticker Thea had given like an afterthought was more valuable to him.Livestock will always be livestock, as they say.On the other hand, Thea kept repeating, "No, that's impossible…"She was convinced she beat me, only for everything to turn out to be a pitfall I set, and she jumped in it willingly.Holding her gaze, I continued, "Also, I've called the cops, since you were using visiting Xir as an excuse to steal personal property amounting to millions… Or did you think that I would let that slide?"I slammed the evidence I had on the table, and she paled as she looked at it.She screamed and tried to run outside, but I caught her. Pinching my nose, I asked, "Aren't you taking your stinking fish with you? I promised you the oth

I watched them, waiting for the perfect opportunity. When it arrived, I leapt forward in a single stride, plunging the knife into his chest and twisting my wrist.A perfect heart was exposed, but I was so fast they didn't even have time to react."Are you crazy?!" Xir exclaimed in shock when he realized that I had just taken his heart. However, it happened in the blink of an eye. By the time he could gather his thoughts enough to take back his heart, I'd already put it in a security briefcase and sped straight to the hospital. All he could do was stare blankly at the gaping hole in his chest, still confused about why I had done that, his life draining away amidst fear and bewilderment. Was it all because he didn't love me?"Argh!!!"As for Thea, she screamed in terror when she saw Xir bleeding profusely beneath her, and bolted.Nonetheless, Xir's ghost remained bound to his body, floating in the air while he watched his own corpse rot and stink in the expensive water tank.

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 8

Xir began, "Thea and I just agreed that I will move to her place in two days, but her place is too small and doesn't have a tank. Moreover, she can't afford to sustain our lifestyle on her meager salary, so give her your shares. Just 25%—it's not that much anyway.""25%?!" I blurted in disbelief.Who on earth gave them the audacity to demand 25% of my company shares?Still, as soon as Xir sensed my disapproval, he snapped impatiently, "You're not short on money. So what if you shared some with Thea? How are we going to survive if you don't give us the money? She has a claim anyway, and you're just returning the money to the rightful owner."I laughed despite myself—these two worms were still insatiable even on the final day."Do you understand how much is 25%?" I asked Xir nonetheless. However, his patience was exhausted from just a single question. "This isn't up for discussion! This is just for your information!"I sighed, knowing what else was coming if I kept refusing. "Fine

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 7

However, I was too busy thinking about my conversation with Dr. King to pay much attention to what Thea was saying. He insisted that I must extract the heart when the merfolk were at their happiest moment, so I couldn't help wondering when Xir was happiest. There was nothing to lose anyway, so I asked Thea, "Do you know what makes Xir the happiest?"The timing of the question was just as surprising as the question itself.Soon, however, Thea was smiling knowingly. She thought I did care about Xir after all—I was just too devastated to react. Smugly crossing her legs, she scoffed with a taunting edge in her voice, "When he makes love to me, of course."I see. When I got home, I asked Xir the same question. "What makes you the happiest?"Xir rolled his eyes at me. "It's already been a day—stop trying to charm me, I'd never fall for you."While I found it laughably stupid the way he thought the world of himself, I mustered my patience and asked again, "Just answer my question."

  • A Merman's Heart   Chapter 6

The next day, I just reached my office when my phone started ringing.I just answered it when Xir snapped haughtily, "Come home right now!""What is it? I'm at work," I replied with a hint of exasperation—heaven knows what else he was up to this time. Naturally, just the hint of refusal sent him flying to a rage. "Come back right now or I won't take the potion!""Fine," I replied, sighing. There were just two days left—I couldn't afford to screw up now.Still, when I got home, I saw that Thea was there too. "What are you doing here?" I asked. "I arranged a job for you."She yawned, stretching her arms nonchalantly. "You own the company, don't you? So what if I didn't work? Just pay me normally." Xir nodded in agreement. "That's right. I have proper business with Thea, go stand outside.""Will you take your potion properly if I do that?" I asked. He smiled gleefully seeing that I was so concerned about his health. "Yes. If you get your act together."Hearing that was good
