Chapter 6: I want you

“Hello Evelyn” he said. It was him

 Evelyn who stared at him could feel her body tremble slightly on remembering the incident that happened just few nights ago.

“Y… How did you find me?” she asked to see him tilt his head at her. His hands placed in his pocket gave him a calm and resolute look but even with that Evelyn couldn’t deny the unsettling feeling that rose within her on sighting him. 

There was something about him she couldn’t quite tell. A nod was given to him by the officer with them in some respectable way before he left walking away.

“Is that any way to appreciate your savior” he spoke, a brow raised over the other and hearing him say this, she blinked understanding his words.

“Our path always seem to cross and each time, I am your saviour” he said.

“You bailed me?” her question went unanswered by him until a man dressed in suite stepped forward with a briefcase in hand.

“Sir, the bail has been processed and…” he stopped on seeing her.

“She’s free to go” he simply said. Evelyn who heard him speak was a bit confused. Apparently, it was now clear he bailed her out and the man next to him was his lawyer but Evelyn couldn’t understand how he seemed to know.

“Are you stalking me?” she asked knowing that could me the only excuse to him finding her today.

“You seem to ask the wrong question and say the wrong words. Think of it as, meeting by chance” he said only easing her doubts by an inch but today being a rough day for her, she didn’t linger on it much but instead, regaining her composure, she uttered discreetly.

“Thank you” she said but instead almost immediately, she noticed the change in his facial expression as a scowl formed up his face. 

“What happened?”

“Do I need to remind you that the word thank you doesn’t relate to me? I prefer to have my deed repaid” his words were casual words with an evident meaning in them. Simply put ‘pay him back’.

With this in mind, she raised her head staring into his dark eyes that seemed to be lifeless.

“Fine then, I’ll pay you back” on the mere utterance of her words, a chuckle left his lips as he gazed at her and seeming to see through her, he stepped forward closing the distance between.

A tingling sensation on her skin was felt as his breath lingered on her cheeks, his imposing aura was enough to suffocate her causing her to stake a step back when she heard him speak.

“Do you really think you can pay me back?” he asked making her brows to furrow together. 

”How much is it?”

“Fifty thousand dollars” informed the lawyer behind him for an emotion to flicker within her, eyes slightly widened. The amount was really huge and even with the money she had saved up, she didn’t think it would be able to reach that amount.  The change in her demeanor could be noticed by Xander who stood there.

“Can’t afford it” deep was his voice pulling her out of her trance. Apparently she was tongue tied at the moment but gathering her thoughts together she went on to say.

“No, I’ll pay the money” she went on to declare.

 “I will just need time….”

“Tomorrow night” the abrupt interruption accompanied by his words made her speechless. The time limit was definitely short.

“What? That’s not enough time” she insisted but the man before her didn’t seem to change his mind.

“Why don’t you give me some more time so I’ll….”

“Tomorrow night Ms. Evelyn” said Xander still on his words and a change in his expression. Mere looking at him, it didn’t look like he would change his mind anytime soon.

“If you do have another means of payment I’m open for it” he uttered foe Evelyn to give a defeated sigh. No further words were said making Xander walk past her towards the exit, his hands still glued to his pocket and right before he could fully leave her sight, she halted him with her words.

“But wait, how will I contact you?” she questioned to see him stop but didn’t look back instead, it was his lawyer who turned to approach her bringing forth a business card.

“Here” he said for her to reach out getting hold of the card, looking down at it before looking at the back of the man turned to her and right before he could leave, glancing over his shoulder, she heard him utter,

“We will meet soon Evelyn” he said, his words holding a promise. A promise that seemed to make a shiver go down her spine and a sense of foreboding she felt in the way he called her name.

In the end, she was left to watch his retreating back and only after he was long gone, did she leave the station heading back home. There she met Olivia who had a stunned expression to her face.

“What happened? I was about to come to the station” Evelyn’s gaze narrowed down to the flask in her hand. No doubt, its content was meant for her.

“I got bailed” she simply answered.

“By who?”

“Xander” she answered. 

The answer was quite simple but by the confused look on Olivia's face, Evelyn could tell she needed a detailed explanation which she gave once she was inside and fully rested.

Before going to bed, a call was placed to Aurora who felt relieved on hearing of Evelyn's bail. 

 

Morning was quick to come by with Evelyn tossing on the bed.

Performing her morning routine, she left heading to the restaurant where she searched for manager Barnes only to be informed that he hasn't arrived yet giving her no option but to wait for a few while and even still he didn't show up.

Apparently,he seemed to be avoiding him because even when she called his line, he didn't respond but instead, always cut her calls.

A frown crawled up her head but it only deepened when she turned to see Josh walking into the restaurant. His eyes landing on her.

Seeing him approach her, Evelyn picked up her bag attempting to leave when he halted her by placing himself in front of her.

"Evelyn we need to talk" he said. A scoff was heard from her as she walked past him leaving the restaurant.

Her hands extended attempting to flair down a cab.

"I'm sorry about how I acted last night. I didn't mean any word I said.

After you hung up, I called you several times but you didn't pick up. I even came to the station to bail you out only to be informed that you were released" he narrated all of which didn't even earn him a stare from her.

Her effort to stop a cab continued making his brows to crease slightly. Getting hold of her wrists, he turned her to him.

"Are you listening? I came Evelyn. I...." 

"Well you were late as you can see, I'm just fine without you. Why don't you stop bothering me already?" She asked. The sight of him only added to her annoyance which increased by the minute.

"I'm sorry about how I acted. I should have put my grudges aside"

"No, you very well knew what you were doing. You wanted me to come to you seeing how vulnerable I was. You are pathetic!" 

Her words left him speechless. A sense of helplessness filled his eyes and for a fleeting moment, it felt like he was really feeling apologetic.

Silence reigned between them with the sound of vehicles driving along the road being the only sound to be heard. 

Finally, a cab slowed down beside her and shaking her head, she turned to the driver wanting to tell him her coordinate when she was pulled by the arm by Josh.

"Can't you let the past be in the past? We can start afresh?"

"Can you undo what you did?" She asked him once again leaving him speechless.

She couldn't understand why men behaved like this.

He cheated on her with Amelia and now that she called things off with him, why couldn't he let her be.

It was obvious she didn't want anything to do with him.

"How did you get bailed? Why were you taken in the first place?"

"It doesn't matter to you. My matters doesn't concern you" 

"It does Evelyn. I can honestly help" he said, his grip on her hand feeling a bit tight on her wrist.

"I don't need it" 

Immediately she uttered these words,the sound of ringtone broke through the air. A hand was placed into the pocket and stealing a glance at the caller ID, it was Amelia calling.

Josh was quick to cut the call not wanting Evelyn to see but unfortunately was too late.

"You're lover is calling. She must be wondering where you are" she said yanking her hand from his. No doubt,her heart ached terribly and before she could break down in front of him, she hastened into the cab and closing the door shut, she motioned for the driver to drive.

Seeing Amelia still in touch with him after what they did to her made tears cloud the corner of her eyes. 

A tear she tried to stiffen finally falling down her cheeks.

She drove over to Aurora's side there she stayed with a for a while.

During the time there, she thought of how to raise the money by tonight.

A thought told her to ask Aurora for help but couldn't bring herself to do so on seeing her condition. Apparently, the maids present were left to take care of her since both her parents was out.

Yes she was feeling better but a doctor was still brought in to check on her. Drugs were prescribed by the doctor and after a few look at her, her motioned she will be fine in a few days.

In the end, she couldn't bring herself to ask Aurora but fortunately, Olivia was willing to help lending her some money which she was grateful for.

Olivia had called to inform she would return late today and Evelyn hearing this nodded in acknowledgement.

Now checking her account, she glanced down at the digits that stared at her.

It wasn't still enough to complete the required amount she needed.

A sigh which was heard by Aurora left her lips.

"Is something wrong?" She asked placing her hand on Evelyn. The warmth spreading through her forcing her to put on a fake smile.

The look on Aurora's face showed concern as she laid in bed, face pale and lips dry.

"It's nothing. Just thinking" she gave a fake smile that made Aurora's look to ease up.

"You can tell me if anything is bugging yo..." She was unable to complete her words as she gave out series of cough.

"Rest. You'll definitely be the first person I'll call if I need help" she said.

Aurora laid back on the bed watching Evelyn till sleep finally came over here. Now seeing the figure on the bed sleeping soundly, Evelyn stood walking out the door. She took a cab back to her apartment. A point was reached where she stepped out using her leg to take the rest of the journey home and all the while she endlessly thought of what to do.

Clearly, night had come and yet she wasn't even with the complete amount.

Should she call to ask for more time?

Or should she simply ignore and call when she was with the complete amount?

Confusion clouded her senses and in her confusion, just as she looked up, ahead of her a car was parked right outside her apartment.

It wasn't the police as it was a black Bentley. The who gracefully leaned on it stood erect on noticing her.

"Ms Evelyn?" He called. The hesitation to answer was in her voice and after a few seconds, her lips parted to speak.

"Yes, this is she?" She said keeping a good distance between them. 

"Good. Mr Xander request your presence" he said making her blink repeatedly.

Questions twirling in her brain.

First was how he came to know where she lives because clearly, she didn't give out her address to him.

"How did you find out where I live?" She asked but got no reply from him. Instead, he turned, opened the door for her and signalled her in.

She guessed she was left to ask his boss.

Stepping in, the door closed and the ride to their destination which was unknown to Evelyn began.

Throughout the ride, silence reigned in the air with none of them saying a word.

Evelyn thought of what to say when she was in front of him.

"We have arrived" he informed. The door opened and she stepped out. With him in front of her, she walked in the path he walked until they reached the door to the private suite.

Her heart raced as the door pulled open and the luxurious look of the suite revealed itself to her.

The red a carpet spread along the floor gave it a fine fitting. Although a contrast to the walls of the suite but still radiant.

Walking in, she watched as the door closed behind them.

"Boss" he called out. The lantern from the dark corners was switched on revealing a man who sat on the couch arms spread apart on both sides. His head turned to her and a slight tilt was made as he angled his head at her.

"Ms Evelyn, glad you made it" he said and for a moment, Evelyn was speechless. The several thoughts and words she had thought if completely vanished.

"Take a seat" he said and slowly, she walked over to seat across from him.

The man who had brought her earlier stepped forward pouring them a drink before standing aside.

"Thank you Gerald. You may leave" he said for Gerald to acknowledge with a bow before leaving them both alone. Evelyn's look may look composed but she swallowed internally feeling nervous.

"He came to pick me up. How did he know where I live?"

"Seems like you have a habit of addressing me first with a question"

"Because your actions make me curious" she responded making him raise a brow at her.

"If you must know, my lawyer processed your bail" he said making Evelyn have a hint that he must have gotten her details from the police.

"Besides, you don't expect me to not know the address of my debtors" he spoke his eyes staring intently at her. A subtle change in her expression could be seen as she shifted in her seat.

"About the money.... I... Uhm..." For the first time in a while she stuttered not knowing what to say.

"You don't have it" he spoke plainly uttering out what she found so hard to say.

"If you give me time I could..."

"Time is what you don't have Evelyn. I gave you time and now it's used up" at this he stood making her to seat uncomfortably on the seat and as he approached her, instinctively she jerked up from her seat.

"The time you gave me is short. I urge you to please..."

"If I extend the time by half an hour will you still be able to repay me?" He asked and once again she was speechless.

"No... But I have some of the money ready"

"But not all of it" he said keeping her shut. Evelyn couldn't help but notice that she seemed to be speechless whenever he spoke.

The unease he placed her in made her heart to palpitate.

"Do you really think I helped you just so you could pay me back?" He uttered, his words made her look at him with a confused gaze.

At first she blinked trying to hear right.

Clearly, he didn't look like someone that would be bothered If she didn't pay him back.

"You don't want me to pay you back?" She asked to hear his dark chuckle that reverberated through the walls of the suite.

"Did you stop to think why I bailed you. Normally I'm not someone to think or to care about people. I find them insignificant, But you..."  He raised his gaze to her.

Evelyn who heard this watched him take a step towards her. His strides slow but steady like a predator approaching its prey.

"Why did you bail me?" She couldn't help but ask as she swallowed hard.

"Because I want something from you" he said walking to stand in front of her.

Evelyn's breathing hitched, her body trembling slightly as she dared not to ask the question that now lingered in her mind as a sense of fore brooding filled the air.

At long last, she pulled herself to ask.

"W.... What do you want from me?" She asked him.

Instinctively, she took a step back wanting to keep the distance but just before her feet could land on to the solid floor, she was pulled forward landing into his embrace.

Her breathing turned heavy and hard as his height towered over her.

His breath lingering on her fair cheeks as he uttered the words.

"I WANT YOU.

SPEND THE NIGHT WITH ME"
