Ariel sat in the cushioned chair across from Dr. Kael, her fingers curling tightly around the edge of her purse. She hadn’t said much since they arrived, and neither had she, at least until now.

“I understand this has been weighing on you for a long time,” the doctor began gently, setting a thin file on the table between them. “You were never given full disclosure on the nature of Max’s illness?”

Ariel shook her head. “No one told me anything real.

I just knew he had a sickness, or a condition and then I took him for treatment and … and that it was handled. But I didn’t know what it was, or how serious. I thought maybe it was something minor.”

Dr. Kael exhaled, opening the file and glancing over a summary page. “Well, Max was diagnosed with a form of congenital arrhythmia. It's very rare. Essentially, it’s a defect in the electrical system of the heart—causing it to beat irregularly, sometimes dangerously so.”

Ariel's lips parted slightly, but she said nothing.

“In Max’s case,” the d

He walked briskly to his car, nodding once at his driver before getting in. The door shut, sealing him inside the hum of soft leather and silence.“Where to, sir?” the driver asked.Alexander didn’t answer right away.He stared out the tinted window, watching the city blur, every light and building suddenly looking vulnerable. Dario wouldn’t come empty-handed, that much was sure. He was coming to a foreign ground, so he had to be well prepared. He was chaos in tailored suits, fire wrapped in charm. He certainly had something up his sleeves. But, if he made a single move toward the company, toward Ariel, or—Max.Alexander’s throat tightened.“Sir?” the driver asked again.Alexander blinked.“Drive back to the company,” he said swiftly. “Yes, sir.”The driver kicked off the ignition, the engine roaring to life beneath them. The car pulled into traffic.Alexander leaned back, fingers tapping slowly on his knee. He shot his eyes closed, his breath calm and steady. A poised man who wou

The office was silent safe for the soft ticking of the antique clock behind him. The blinds were half-drawn, slicing the room with slivers of warm afternoon light, but Alexander’s gaze was cold, fixed on a few documents scattered across the table. “This isn’t just defamation anymore,” Philip said calmly from across the table, fingers steepled, voice even. He was Alexander’s best legal mind for a reason. He knew his way around tough situations, just what Alexander needed right now. “My team has met with Ms. Delgado’s. She's presenting her copies of the photo as evidence of intimidation and coercion. The photos alone don’t carry weight, but she’s claiming to have a witness.”“A witness?” Alexander’s voice was low, laced with quiet danger.“She kept whoever it is anonymous, for now,” Philip replied. “But she’s agreed to another conversation. A private meeting with you. My suggestion is we do it soon—before she gets bold enough to go to the press or escalate with the authorities.”A

The cab rolled to a slow stop just off the dusty curb of a run-down street where the only color came from a flickering neon "VACANCY" sign. Ariel kept her head down, tugging the hoodie further over her face as she reached into her bag and handed the driver a crumpled bill. He didn’t ask her any more questions. She stepped out quickly, the sharp scent of gasoline and damp concrete filling her nostrils. Her sneakers scraped against the gravel as she made her way to the motel office, a squat little building with peeling paint and dusty windows. The inside was no better than the outside. The room was dimly lit, with a cracked linoleum floor and a glass barrier between her and the night clerk who didn't bother to look up from his computer when she stepped in.“I need a room. Just for the night,” she said, her voice low and strained.“Cash?” he asked without blinking. She nodded and slid the bills under the glass.Ariel didn’t use her name, Johnny would trace it if she did. Instead, she

The clock on the wall revealed noon, but time had lost meaning long ago. He sat behind the desk in his sparse office, his fingers drumming a restless rhythm on the wood. The sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting sharp lines across the room, but all he could feel was the weight of waiting. No word from Alexander. No sign of movement toward Spain. Dario’s jaw clenched. Every second that passed was a risk—another moment exposed, another chance the noose tightened. He couldn't bear to wait around like a fool any longer. The silence shattered when the door creaked open and his trusted man slipped inside, eyes darting nervously before settling on Dario.“Boss,” the man whispered, voice low but urgent. “One of our assets assigned to sniff around the cops just checked in…” He started. “What did he say?” Darios asked not baiting him an eye. “He says your name’s been showing up more and more in police chatter these last few hours.”Dario’s eyes narrowed. “Meaning?”“They’re look

He pulled out the folder and then flipped it through. The first thing he saw was her address, the picture of a beautiful penthouse. That had to be Johnny's. It was a high end penthouse listed under Johnny’s name, and her name marked as his wife. The tag felt sour in Luis’s mind. He also saw recent photos of hers. Her face, still as beautiful as he remembered, even more than in fact. A picture of Ariel at a café, also one of Ariel walking out of a therapist's office. Ariel shopping—with a bodyguard just behind her.Luis froze at once, his eyelids twitching uncontrollably, his heart sank into something more than despair. It was her standing at a balcony at night, fingers clenched around a railing, face turned to the sky.She didn't seem happy in this picture, nor did she in any of them actually. Maybe she was imprisoned by Johnny. She was staying there against her will. He memorized the address on the bottom left of penthouse acquisition papers and then he quickly slipped the

The sharp buzz of his alarm pulled him from a light sleep just before sunrise. Luis blinked against the morning light pouring in through his light curtains. He managed to keep his heart steady and his mind already alert. Today was the first day of work at the Lucas Company. By hook or crook he got in, but that was only the first step, but now the second, staying invisible and blending in. He rose from his bed, and went through his morning routine. First, a very cold shower to calm his head a little. And then hot black coffee. He got dressed into something formal. He would wear this, at least till he's given a uniform. It was not the kind of job he was used to, but he could make this work, he had to.It was still early when he stepped out into the crisp morning air. He waved down a cab, and got in. The drive through the city was uneventful, the buildings slowly rising in confidence the closer he got to the financial district. Lucas Corporation’s headquarters towered like a monol
