"I’ll pay you. How much do you need? You just have to live with me and be my housemaid.”
“Oohh looks like you do have a new job.” The person who spoke behind my back got our attention.
I noticed the frown of Mr. Reed while looking at the man who interrupted our conversation. I turned to look at the man, and my eyes widened in horror. Why, of all days does he need to come here? Is he here to end my life? Just like what he wrote on my mirror? I immediately hugged myself for fear that this might be my end. What about my mother? Who will look after her if I disappear to where in this world?
“Who are you?” I noticed Mr. Reed stepping forward, and it was like he was blocking me to face the newcomer.
“Are you her new boyfriend?” Mr. Reed asked.
The shark loaner, Greg, laughed as if he had heard a ridiculous joke.
“Boyfriend?” He looked at his men. “Don’t be absurd, Mister. I don’t have plans to make her my girlfriend. She’s not my type. She’s not that hot to be my girlfriend.” His men chuckled at his remarks.
I scoffed. He’s not even my type. I looked at him in disgust.
“Then why are you here? Who are you?”
The man in front of me immediately caught my attention. His broad back was facing me. But he still looked handsome, even if I was just looking at his back.
Why was I thinking about him? I shook my head. This can’t be happening. Focus, Aurora. Don’t let yourself distract other guys, especially the uncle of your ex.
“Her father owed us money. And I am here to get what is mine.” George, the leader of the shark loaner, said.
I snorted at what I had just heard.
“I told you, Sir. I will pay you by the end of this month. And it’s just the third week of the month. Can’t you spare me for a moment?”
George spat on the ground in front of me before he glared at me. “The audacity of this woman. Give me at least partial payment or else-”
It was as if my head boiled, my nose blew smoke, and my cheeks were red because of what I had just heard from him.
“Or else what?! Threaten me again like what you had just done?” I scoffed.
“I can sue you. You know that.”
I could see George frowning as if he was puzzled at what I said.
“What are you talking about?” he asked.
“Are they behind the threats you received?” Mr. Reed interrupted.
“Threats?” George asked quizzically.
“What threats?” he asked.
I led the way inside my house to show them what they did.
“Now tell me, this is not your doing?”
George scanned the area and saw how messy my apartment was. He even read the written threat in the mirror.
“This is childish.” He pointed out the mirror. “I don’t do threats like this. I’ll torture the person instead of doing these cowardly things.”
I looked at him in disbelief. “You’re lying. Who would have dared to do these things to me aside from you? You have a motif, and you’re the first person, I think, who has the capability and intention to kill me.”
“In what reason?” he asked.
“Because I couldn’t pay you right away.”
He scoffed. “Miss Smith, so that you know… Money is an important thing to me. If I took your life personally, what would I gain from it? Will you pay me back even if you are in the afterlife?” George.
Right. That’s acceptable. But if he’s not behind the threat… then who? I wondered.
“Then who was behind your threat?” Mr. Reed asked.
George shrugged. “I want to clarify that I am not associated with whoever did it. What matters to me is money. And I need you to pay me, ASAP.”
I took a deep breath and massaged the bridge of my nose in annoyance. I was about to speak, but the man in front of me suddenly spoke.
“How much money is she in debt to you? I will pay for it.”
I noticed George’s brows raised as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“NO! You don’t have to. I don’t need your help. I don’t need your money.” I protested.
“Her father owed me two million. That includes the interest and emotional damage that I’ve been through.” I looked at George in disbelief.
Damn this guy! He doubled the digits to a hundred percent. My father only owed him seven hundred thousand, and if I add the interest, it’s just one million. Why did he say I owed him two million?
“You’re unbelievable! You doubled the price! That’s not fair!” I clenched my fist and wanted to punch his face. This guy is getting on my nerves.
“Okay, then.” I noticed him getting something from his pocket.
I frowned as I wondered what he was planning.
“I don’t have a check here. So here’s my card and call me first thing tomorrow morning. Or go to my company and I will give you the amount you need.”
I forced Mr. Reed to face him and looked at him in the eyes. “I will pay him by the end of this month, sir. Please, let me handle my problem. Don’t interfere.”
“I am offering help. Besides, you will work for every penny I will pay to your creditor. My offer is not for free, you know. You will also need to work for me.”
“But I am not accepting your job offer.” I firmly said.
I don’t want to have any connections with the Mendez Family, especially with this man in front of me.
He raised his brows while staring at me. “Fine. I’ll give you until the last day of the month. If you can’t pay him, then you will have to work for me. As I will pay for your debt.”
Gritting my teeth, I clenched.
“Fine!” I said before I turned to look at the shark loaners.
“Come back on the last day of the month and I will pay you in full,” I said with my head held high.
The shark loaner and his men vanished after the conversation. And I started cleaning my room. I noticed Mr. Reed was still in the living room, standing with his hands in his pockets.
“Why aren’t you leaving?” I asked.
“Because I was wondering who, besides your creditor, has an ulterior motive to threaten you.” Mr. Reed asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t know. But whoever it may be, I don’t care.”
It was already night, and luckily I was finished cleaning. I double-checked the locks of the door, afraid that the vulgar might trespass on my apartment. I lay down on my bed but the word “I WILL KILL YOU,” in the mirror earlier, bothers me.
Who on earth wants to play with me? I don’t know what to do now. I just hope that whoever did it, will not come back anymore.
Yvan’s POV“Mr. Reed, thank you for accompanying me. I know you are busy, and I’m sorry for taking your time to drive me here to the hospital.” Belle said, which made me smile.“Nah. I should be the one who should say sorry. I sent your husband out of the country to find your friend Aurora when he should accompany you for your prenatal checkup.”I am deeply troubled by the absence of Aurora, who departed months ago. To aid in her location, I tasked my reliable secretary, Alexander, with the important mission of identifying the most skilled investigator in the world. It is with great concern that I contemplate Aurora's well-being. I cannot help but sympathize with Belle, Alexander's wife, as I have repeatedly implored him to travel abroad to engage the services of elite investigators for our search efforts. Despite our exhaustive exploration of remote areas where she may have hidden, we have unfortunately been unable to pinpoint her whereabouts. We even tried to go through hospitals, s
Have you ever felt betrayed? Did someone dear to you betray you, or did something you’d never thought they would lose your trust? It’s painful, right? It feels like someone stabbed you behind your back. She was my best friend, always by my side. I never imagined she would deceive me. I believed she was looking out for him, and I had complete faith in her. However, she has significantly changed and is not the same person I once knew. It's distressing to recall the events that took place only three months ago when I lost my son. Shortly before that, I went to the hospital to obtain a fit-to-work letter from my doctor to return to work. While I was there, I witnessed Belle and another individual engaged in a cheerful conversation. Belle was gently caressing her slightly protruding stomach, leading me to the realization that she was pregnant. Lucas, another observer, confirmed that Belle was carrying Yvan's child. “I’m so sorry, Aurora. I never intended to keep secrets from you. But I d
“What were you thinking?” I was taken by surprise and felt a jolt of shock coursing through me when a sudden, unexpected voice spoke from directly behind me.“Gosh, Lucas! Don’t just pop out somewhere. You made my heart jump.” Lucas grinned. He kindly handed me a tall, frosty glass filled with creamy strawberry milkshake that he had just purchased. I expressed my gratitude silently, mouthing a heartfelt "thanks," before bringing the lip of the glass to my mouth and taking a slow, satisfying sip of the delicious milkshake.“What were you thinking? You seemed lost. Is there something wrong?” He asked.I shook my head as an answer to his question and smiled. “It’s nothing,” I replied. As I sat there, my mind kept drifting back to thoughts of my best friend. The ache of missing her was overwhelming, and I couldn't shake the desire to just wrap her in a comforting hug. Belle had been by my side since we were little, and we were practically inseparable when we were together. It tore me apa
I took in the sight of the expansive, two-story villa that sprawled across one hectare before me. I was utterly astonished by the sheer size and luxury of the house. It was hard to fathom that Lucas owned a villa in the city's most affluent neighborhood. While I was aware of Lucas's wealthy background and his investment in Mico's company, I had no idea that he was a billionaire.“Get in.” I was brought back from my deep thoughts when Lucas suddenly spoke behind me with my other things.“I never thought you had this kind of villa.” I found his house quite amusing, as I couldn't help but be impressed by its opulence. The lavish interior decor, adorned with exquisite paintings, stunning artwork, statues, and ornate vases, truly reflected the wealth and sophistication of its owner. “Ah… This? This is just a small house. I hope you’ll be comfortable here.” I looked at Lucas in disbelief.“You called this small house?” I scoffed. “Are you kidding me? This is too huge for me to stay alone h
People here in our province have so much free time that they interfere with someone else’s lives. They can even beat a twenty-four-hour CCTV for watching our lives.Whenever I walk on the road either going home or to work, I notice that my aunts and neighbors are also on the road. They were chatting here and there with the people that came across that road. They greeted them warmly, but they talked behind them when those people passed by. I just shook my head in disappointment. What if someone heard them and they keep talking about the shits of others not thinking theirs were the worst. That day I came home from my job as a cashier at a convenience store. And because my partner is on leave, I have to work overtime. But unexpectedly, because of exhaustion, and staying awake at work, I passed out on the way home. And since our village is small, the news about my pregnancy spread immediately like wildfire. My mother and I became a hot topic in our town. Another thing they talked about wa
“Aurora, how have you been? It’s good to see you here. Were you here for a vacation?”“You look great, dear. Are you still single? My son is single, you might both try to have a date. He’s handsome and my son graduated from law school.”“Hey, Marianne. How have you been? I heard you are sick. Is that true?”When Mom and I arrived at her hometown, the Agusan, some of our relatives who noticed our arrival, came to our grandfather’s house and asked about our lives back in the city. But I’m exhausted. So, I took a deep breath. I know they were curious about how our lives have been in the city. And they want to catch up with us. But I’m tired from the long travel, also I’m pregnant, so I really need some rest.“Hmm… Thank you all for your concerns and for welcoming us back here again. But Mom and I were exhausted from our long travel. I hope you all understand. I wanted to chat with you all, but maybe some other time. Let’s do a raincheck for now, I hope you won’t mind.”“Oh, right. Have s
