I turned my face to the window, pretending to watch the city blur past, but really, I just didn’t want him to see the sting in my eyes.

I wasn't used to being yelled at. Especially by someone other than my Mum. It was usually over something I was supposed to do and it has been years since she did that, not when I have grown.
