CHAPTER 2

The penthouse suite on the top floor of the St. Regis was a monument to minimalist luxury: dark hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the twinkling grid of Manhattan, and a bed large enough to sleep an entire football team.

None of that mattered to Elena.

From the moment the keycard clicked against the lock, the cold, suffocating grief of Mark’s betrayal was completely incinerated. The stranger didn't treat her like fragile glass or a long-term habit. He held her with a fierce, possessive authority that demanded every piece of her attention.

His dark jacket hit the polished floor before they even reached the bed. Long, calloused fingers tangled into her hair, tilting her head back as his lips met hers in a kiss that tasted like top-shelf gin, expensive espresso, and pure danger. Elena gasped into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his broad, structured shoulders, losing herself in the absolute heat of him.

When his hands traced the open back of her emerald silk dress, pulling her flush against his chest, Elena didn't think about four wasted years. She didn't think about her empty apartment or her stolen dog. She only felt the lethal rhythm of his movements, the low rumble of his deep voice in her ear, and a relentless, intoxicating stamina that left her trembling, breathless, and completely consumed long into the early hours of the morning.

At 6:15 AM, the harsh grey light of dawn began to creep past the sheer motorized drapes.

Elena woke up with her heart hammering against her ribs, her body aching in places she had forgotten existed. She blinked against the dim light, disorientation washing over her like a bucket of ice water.

She turned her head slowly on the feather pillow.

Beside her lay the stranger. He was sleeping on his stomach, dark hair tumbled over his forehead, the crisp white sheet pulled low across his waist to reveal the sharp, sculpted lines of his muscular back. Even in sleep, he looked impossibly handsome, imposing, and dangerously out of her reach.

Panic, sharp and cold, instantly replaced her hangover.

What did I just do? Elena thought, clutching the sheet to her collarbone.

She wasn't a woman who did one-night stands. She was Elena Hayes—a structured, methodical marketing strategist who planned her life in five-year increments. If this hyper-wealthy, ridiculously attractive man woke up and saw her lingering, he’d probably think she was just another desperate socialite trying to trap him for a breakfast date or a wire transfer.

Her pride, bruised and battered from Mark's text, flared up like a torch.

"No way," she whispered to the quiet room. "I'm not being the helpless girl today."

She slipped out of bed like a shadow, gathering her crumpled emerald dress and high heels from the plush carpet. She retreated to the adjoining marble bathroom, dressing silently, her reflection in the gilded mirror revealing flushed cheeks and tangled dark hair.

After slicking her hair into a neat knot and fixing her makeup, she stepped back into the bedroom and grabbed her designer handbag. Opening her leather wallet, she pulled out three $100 bills—literally every piece of physical currency she had left after paying her half of the gin bill last night.

She spotted his heavy silver watch sitting beside a leather-bound notebook on the nightstand. Next to it was a pen and a pad of heavy St. Regis stationery.

Elena grabbed the pen. Her mind raced with a toxic blend of embarrassment, defensiveness, and lingering spite toward the male gender as a whole. She pressed the tip to the paper and wrote in sharp, elegant cursive:

"For your time. Consideration for the effort, though frankly, the performance was a bit derivative and lacked stamina. Don't call me."

She pinned the three bills beneath his silver watch, placed her note squarely in the center of his bedside table, took one last glance at his sleeping frame, and slipped out into the empty hallway.

By 7:30 AM, Elena was sitting in the corner booth of a diner three blocks from Vance Enterprises, nursing a massive black coffee.

Across from her, Chloe was staring at her with wide, unblinking eyes, an almond croissant frozen halfway to her mouth.

"You... you left him three hundred dollars?" Chloe whispered loudly, leaning over the formica table. "Elena, you hooked up with a guy who booked a penthouse suite at the St. Regis on a Tuesday night! He probably tips his valet three hundred dollars!"

"I didn't want him thinking I was looking for a payout or a second date," Elena said defensively, taking a long sip of her coffee. "He looked like the kind of arrogant billionaire who thinks every woman wants a piece of his trust fund. I leveled the playing field."

"By leaving an review of his stamina?" Chloe choked back a laugh, covering her mouth. "You are completely insane. The breakup has officially untethered you from reality."

"I am perfectly grounded," Elena declared, adjusting the collar of her sharp navy-blue pantsuit. "Today is about my career. In one hour, I walk into Vance Enterprises for my final executive interview. I get the Senior Creative Director title, I get a two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar salary, and I spend the rest of the year making Mark's professional life an absolute living hell."

Chloe smiled warmly, her eyes softening. "And what about the dog? Barnaby?"

Elena’s hand tightened around her coffee mug, a flicker of genuine pain crossing her face before she locked it down. "I'll get Barnaby back. Legally or otherwise. But first, I take Mark's dream job."

"That's my girl," Chloe said, raising her coffee cup. "Go crush him."

At 8:45 AM, Elena stood in the soaring glass-and-marble lobby of Vance Enterprises. The building was an architectural marvel of steel and light, humming with the quiet energy of high-stakes corporate power.

Elena smoothed down the lapels of her navy suit, taking a deep, steadying breath. As she walked toward the high-security elevators, she spotted a familiar figure near the coffee bar on the ground floor.

It was Mark.

He was wearing a light grey suit, chatting animatedly with two junior analysts, looking completely relaxed and unbothered. He didn't look like a man who had just dismantled a four-year relationship; he looked like a man who had just taken out the trash.

Elena felt a surge of ice enter her veins. She didn't call out to him. She didn't make a scene. She simply held her chin high, turned her back, and stepped into the express elevator reserved for the executive suite.

The elevator doors opened directly onto the 50th floor. The air up here was different—quieter, smelling faintly of polished wood and expensive leather.

A sharp-dressed man in a navy suit stepped forward from the reception desk holding an iPad. Elena instantly recognized him from the bar last night—Julian, the executive assistant.

"Miss Elena Hayes?" Julian asked, his expression perfectly unreadable, professional, and composed. "Mr. Vance is waiting for you in the main office. Right this way."

"Thank you, Julian," Elena said smoothly, following him down the long glass corridor.

Julian stopped outside a pair of massive double doors made of frosted glass and dark walnut. He knocked twice, opened one side, and gestured for her to enter.

"Good luck, Miss Hayes," Julian murmured softly, a subtle, almost imperceptible tilt to his lips before he closed the door behind her.

Elena stepped into the office. It was enormous—floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. At the far end of the room stood a massive black granite desk.

Sitting in the high-backed leather chair, his back turned to the door as he stared out at the city, was a man in a dark charcoal suit.

"Mr. Vance," Elena began, her voice crisp, professional, and authoritative as she stepped forward. "I'm Elena Hayes. Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio for the Senior Creative Director position."

The leather chair spun around slowly.

Elena’s voice died in her throat. The blood in her veins didn't just freeze—it vanished entirely.

Sitting behind the granite desk, impeccably groomed, his dark hair neatly styled, wearing a crisp white shirt and a tailored suit jacket, was her one-night stand.

Alexander Vance. Billionaire CEO of Vance Enterprises.

And, as Mark had boasted dozens of times over family dinners, the formidable, cold-blooded uncle who controlled the entire Vance family empire and held Mark's trust fund in his palm.

Alexander looked at her, his storm-grey eyes locking onto hers with a lethal mixture of quiet authority and dark amusement.

Then, Elena’s gaze drifted down to the center of his spotless granite desk.

Sitting squarely on top of her leather application file were three crisp $100 bills.

And pinned beneath his heavy silver watch was her handwritten St. Regis note.

Mark noticed the silence before he noticed anything else was wrong.Barnaby always met him at the door — always, regardless of how long Mark had been gone or how little attention he'd paid the dog in the days before. It was the one constant Mark had never had to work for, the one relationship in his life that required nothing of him but his presence, and even that, apparently, he'd managed to squander."Barnaby?" His voice echoed off the penthouse's expensive, empty surfaces. No click of claws on marble. No enthusiastic scramble toward the door.He found the food bowl gone from the kitchen first — not empty, gone, the exact spot where it usually sat wiped clean, as though it had never existed at all. Then the dog bed by the window, vanished. Then the leash that usually hung by the door, missing along with everything else that had ever suggested a dog lived here at all."What the hell," Mark muttered, pulling out his phone, dialing the housekeeper with hands that were, to his genuine s

For one full second, nobody in the group thread said anything at all. Carter stood frozen near the lobby wall, watching Mark stride out of the elevator car with the brisk, self-important energy of a man who had never once in his life considered that anyone might be actively working against him. He didn't look toward the service corridor. He didn't look toward Carter at all. His attention was entirely on his phone, thumb scrolling through something that had put a faint, irritated frown on his face."He's here," Carter breathed into his earpiece, forcing his voice level. "Lobby. Walking toward the executive elevators. He hasn't clocked me.""Chloe, status," Viktor's voice cut in, tight and controlled in a way that made the danger feel more real than any amount of shouting would have.Chloe was three floors up, the service elevator doors half-closed, Barnaby pressed against her leg with the instinctive stillness of an animal who could feel tension even when he didn't understand its sourc

Friday arrived with the particular tension of a day everyone involved had been quietly dreading and looking forward to in equal measure. By six o'clock, the group thread had gone almost entirely silent — the calm before what Gavin had, unhelpfully, taken to calling "H-hour," a term Viktor had immediately banned him from using out loud in the building.Elena had spent most of the afternoon unable to focus on anything else, checking her phone under her desk between meetings like a teenager waiting for a text back. She'd told herself, more than once, that it was ridiculous to be this invested in the logistics of moving one dog three floors down and out a service elevator. It didn't stop her from checking again five minutes later.Viktor positioned himself in the security office, monitors arrayed in front of him, a direct line to Marco's radio open on the desk. Gavin sat two floors up in an empty conference room, laptop open to Mark's calendar and the building's badge-access logs, ready t

Chloe walked the route on Wednesday evening exactly as instructed, a lanyard borrowed from a temp badge Viktor had quietly authorized clipped to her blazer, a takeout bag in one hand as cover in case anyone questioned why a member of the creative team was loitering near the executive elevator bank after hours.Nobody questioned her. That was, she reflected, either a good sign for the plan or a genuinely alarming commentary on the building's security — though given that Viktor himself had approved the route, she suspected it was more the former. She timed the elevator ride to the penthouse floor — ninety seconds, longer than she expected, the express car apparently slower than the ones serving the lower floors. She timed the walk from the elevator to Mark's door — thirty seconds at a normal pace, less if you didn't stop to admire the absurd modern art he'd hung in the hallway, which Chloe did anyway, on principle, because it was truly baffling. She noted the housekeeper's car still in

Viktor Petrov had spent eleven years in corporate security, most of it profoundly boring, which was exactly how he liked it. Boring meant nothing had gone wrong. Boring meant everyone got to go home at the end of the day. So when Gavin Knight appeared at his desk with the particular energy of a man about to propose something deeply not boring, Viktor's first instinct was to say no before he'd even heard the request."Whatever it is," Viktor said, not looking up from his monitors, "no.""You haven't heard it yet.""I've known you four years. I don't need to hear it."Gavin pulled up a chair anyway, uninvited, and set his laptop on the corner of Viktor's desk. "It's for a good cause.""It's always for a good cause. That's how you get people to say yes to terrible ideas.""Fine. Hear me out, and if you still hate it, I'll drop it and never mention it again." Gavin held up both hands in a show of good faith that Viktor, having known him four years, did not trust even slightly. "There's a

Carter found Elena in the middle of restacking a pile of vendor contracts that had somehow multiplied overnight, the particular chaos of a desk belonging to someone who had too many active problems and not enough hours to solve any of them properly."You have a minute?" he asked, already closing the door behind him without waiting for permission — a habit Elena had learned meant whatever he wanted to say wasn't for the open floor."Depends what kind of minute.""The kind where I tell you something that's going to make you angry at Mark, which I realize is not exactly breaking news at this point."Elena set down the contract she was holding. "Go on."Carter told her about Barnaby — the missed feedings, the two days alone in the penthouse, the housekeeper quietly absorbing a responsibility that wasn't hers because nobody else would. He watched Elena's expression shift as he spoke, the careful professional mask cracking just slightly at the edges."That's not neglect," Elena said finally
