Chapter 1

The scrolling comments in front of me were still recounting all of the bad things that my son, Theo Sterling, had done in the past. They said that he was rude, had a bad temper, selfish, and often bullied the other kids at preschool.

Before I could process my thoughts again, I heard some noise coming from next to me, and I quickly saw a chubby little boy thundering down the stairs. It might be some sort of intuition on my part, but I could tell at once that this little boy was my son, Theo.

I was sitting in the living room, but Theo didn't seem like he'd noticed me at all and ran straight for the fridge. The nanny, Fanny Smith, was chasing after him.

"Ah, Mr. Sterling Junior, you've already had three ice creams today! If you get another upset tummy because of another one, Mr. Sterling is going to get angry with me again!"

Theo pretended not to have heard her at all. So, Fanny just turned to me and gave me a pleading look.

"What's the point of the nanny looking at Ms. Fodder? She's the kid's biological mom, and she was absent for the last five years of his life. She's only going to side with him even more out of guilt."

"Honestly speaking, doesn't anyone think that the previous transmigrator was a fake? She was supposed to shower the kid with motherly love, but she only continued spoiling him rotten. And look what happened now?

"The kid's even more spoiled and terrible than before. He's so chubby that he doesn't even have the looks to redeem his character anymore!"

"You can really tell what a person is going to be like when they're older when you see them as a little child. I foresee the kid growing up to be a gambler, a playboy, and an abuser of his parents!"

"I'm not even going to feel sorry for the kid if he were to suffocate in his sleep."

At that, I finally couldn't hold it in anymore and said, "Theo Sterling, put that ice cream down."

I remember that this was the name my husband, Austin Sterling, had given him when I was eight months pregnant. We had thought that it was a cute yet proper name for our baby boy.

Theo just looked at me disdainfully and said, "You're so annoying! Mind your own business!"

Then, he shoved a huge bite of ice cream into his mouth defiantly. The ice cream smeared across half of his mouth, and his eyes that nearly disappeared under all the baby fat kept staring at me, narrowing slightly, like he was challenging me.

When he saw that I was still glaring at him, Theo then raised his hands and gave me two middle fingers. At once, I felt the anger well up inside me. Was I going to side with him and spoil him? Not a chance!

I grabbed hold of him and said, "Who taught you to do this? Where did you learn this from?"

"Let me go! Let me go!" Theo shouted. "If you don't let go of me, Daddy's going to smack you when he comes back!"

I scoffed. On the contrary, I felt like smacking Austin when he came back instead, for raising Theo into a child who behaved like this.

I told the dumbfounded Fanny to get me some tape from the study. Then, I grabbed hold of Theo's middle fingers and wrapped the rest of his fingers together in a fist.

He liked raising his middle fingers at other people, didn't he? Well then, he could keep them raised for the rest of the time.

Theo didn't cry or make a fuss. He just held his fists up and glared angrily at me.

"When Daddy comes back, I'm going to tell Daddy that you bullied me! You're never getting this month's allowance from him! You'll also never be able to buy any fancy jewelry anymore!" he yelled.

"When is your father coming back?" I asked.

Theo drew his lips in a line and refused to speak. I glanced at Fanny instead.

She replied, "Mr. Sterling is in Brookbay for a business trip, Mrs. Sterling. He should be coming back in a week."

[Theo's POV]"Mommy would never treat me like this if she were still here!" Theo exclaimed. However, he regretted shouting it at Austin as soon as the words tumbled from his mouth.Austin's expression looked as if he was about to shatter at any moment. Theo watched as Austin's mouth opened and closed a few times, wanting to say something but ultimately saying nothing.Theo flew into a panic and tried to apologize, but Austin just patted him on the head and finally said, "It's not your fault…"Theo thought things would continue like this—him hating everyone and getting hated on in return. One fine day, however, his mother suddenly had the nanny tape his fingers together.Theo was shocked. He felt as though something was no longer the same. After that, his mother began disciplining him, talking sense into him, and reasoning with him, and he felt that his mother was acting as if she were truly his mother again.Eventually, Theo didn't like eating snacks anymore. However, he still re

  • A Perfect Summer   Chapter 11

[Rosanna's POV]After suddenly dying from working too much, I realized that I had transmigrated into a novel that I'd been reading late into the night a few days ago.Unfortunately, I was neither the main female lead nor any of the supporting cast. Instead, I was the cannon fodder who was slated to only appear for a few scenes in the front before getting killed off after a while. The system bound to me told me that I was the wife of the story's main antagonist and the mother of the secondary antagonist. My mission was to change the trajectory of their lives and help them forge their own paths.I agreed and accepted the mission only perfunctorily. In reality, however, I never thought much about my mission. This was how we, as office workers, behaved. If I was given work to do, as long as I got it done, how I got it done was none of anybody else's business.I had already had enough of the workaholic life in my past. I didn't have the energy to keep trying to change the lives of two

  • A Perfect Summer   Chapter 10

After two weeks of Theo's diet consisting of nothing but healthy, nutritious food during his recovery, it wasn't surprising that he lost a considerable amount of weight. His chubby little face began to gain some definition, and even his eyes, which had previously been weighed down by fat deposits, seemed to have enlarged and brightened.Austin was right when he said Theo looked a lot like me. Also, I couldn't deny that Theo was a naturally gifted child, having inherited the best of both Austin and me. It was no wonder that even the bullet comments had begun to side with him.…It was one year later, and Theo began losing his baby teeth. I put a camera in the fridge to catch Theo sneaking chocolate at night. Lo and behold, I caught him red-handed on the third night I installed the camera there. At that very same moment, Austin was coaxing me to put the blindfold on and focus entirely on him. My phone had just begun buzzing with a notification when he snatched it away from me and se

Another comment popped up. "Hilary's personality is so weak! I'm getting sick of her. Honestly speaking, the main plot isn't half as interesting as the villains' daily life.""Whatever it is, Sandy will definitely come home unscathed. She is the main owner after all, and the story can't continue without her. But you can't say the same about Theo…"When I read that comment, I couldn't hold it in anymore and turned to leave the room. I then quickly dialed the number that I'd saved in my phone a long time ago. I was going to save my son no matter what.Within two hours of the call I'd made, there was a huge commotion in the skies above the preschool. The male lead of the plot, Wesley Hunter, had finally arrived. I briefly explained things to him and also told him that my son, Theo, had been dragged into it as another victim as well.Wesley frowned and made a few calls, quickly pinpointing the kidnappers' location. However, the kidnappers were armed with weapons, so the rescue missi

  • A Perfect Summer   Chapter 8

"The money we have all belongs to Mommy, and Daddy also belongs to Mommy," Austin told Theo.In other words, he was telling Theo that he wasn't the primary decision maker in the house anymore. Theo was stupefied. He simply didn't understand why his dad seemed to have changed overnight. After living with me for a while, Theo knew that I only looked soft and gentle, yet I had my own set of principles. Austin might look cold and quiet, but he was also the one who always caved and gave in to his wishes first.Theo must have really wanted that smart watch because he then shifted his attention to me. However, he didn't use his beseeching look on me this time. He made some assurances and promises instead.I smiled lightly at him and immediately went upstairs to the study to print out an agreement. The agreement said that if I were to buy him the latest smartwatch, he would also willingly do everything I told him.All this included, but was not limited to, washing the dishes, vacuuming t

  • A Perfect Summer   Chapter 7

Austin told me that something had felt off about me as soon as I had come out of the delivery room.At first, he thought that I had postpartum depression and got so frightened that he secretly consulted a number of psychologists without letting anyone know. Eventually, he realized that my eating habits, dress, and even manner of speech had completely changed. He was then thoroughly convinced that I wasn't the same person anymore. He tried talking to the transmigrator, Rosanna Lacewin, a few times, and she laid down all her cards on the table, coming clean to him.She said, "I'm here to save your wife's life. As for the question about when I'm planning to leave… Let's see when I finally get sick of this life."Austin hadn't dared to risk anything with me, so he took a step back and tried to maintain a semblance of peace with Rosanna. When I heard this, I pinched his cheeks and said, "So, you even began neglecting your own kid after that?"Austin leaned down and pressed our forehead
