Chapter 3

Author: Huge Whale
Moving into the guest wing was my idea.

At first, Adelaide refused. "The guest wing barely gets any sunlight. Your body can't handle the cold. How are you supposed to live there?"

She sat behind the desk in her study, reading through military reports without even looking up.

I stood across from her, my voice calm. "The main house is too noisy. I want somewhere quiet."

It really was noisy. Ever since Fabian moved in, doctors and servants carrying medicine had been coming and going every day.

Adelaide had even moved her study into the room next to his.

At last, she looked up from the report and glanced at me. "Fine. Once Fabian has fully recovered, you can move back."

She thought this was some petty attempt to compete for her attention.

I didn't explain, turning to go back to my room to pack. There wasn't much to take anyway. I left behind all the expensive clothes and belongings she'd given me over the years. All I brought were two sets of plain clothes and the bag filled with the odds and ends I'd treasured.

The guest wing was freezing. There was no proper heating, and several cracks around the windows let the wind straight in. Every cold draft made the wound in my chest ache.

That night, the poison in my body flared up. It was a consequence of having blood taken from my heart.

My body had always survived through a delicate balance of different toxins. Now that I'd lost so much blood, that balance had been disrupted, and the cold poison was turning against me.

I curled up on the hard mattress, trembling uncontrollably.

The door suddenly flew open.

Adelaide stood there holding a lantern. The moment she saw me curled into myself, her expression changed.

"Reed!" She rushed over and gathered me into her arms, blanket and all.

"Why didn't you send someone to get me?" She pressed a hand to my forehead, only to jerk it back at how cold my skin was.

"Where's your warming stone?" Her hands immediately searched around my neck.

Years ago, she'd traveled for three days to seek out a renowned healer who'd given her the stone to help suppress the cold poison in my body.

I kept my eyes shut and said nothing.

When her fingers found nothing around my neck, her voice rose sharply. "Where is it?"

I opened my eyes and looked at the panic on her face. "Did you forget, General Knight? Yesterday afternoon, Fabian said he was cold. You took it off my neck yourself and gave it to him."

Adelaide went rigid. Only then did she seem to remember.

Fabian had caught a chill in the garden yesterday and sneezed several times. She'd immediately become worried. When she happened to see me walking past, she'd taken the warming stone from around my neck without a second thought.

At the time, she'd said, "Reed, let Fabian borrow it for a few hours. I'll give it back to you later."

Adelaide's lips parted, panic flickering through her eyes. "I... I'll go get it back right now."

She lowered me onto the bed and started to leave.

"Don't."

She stopped and turned back.

"I don't want something that's already been given to someone else." I rolled over to face the wall, leaving only my back to her.

"Reed..."

She stood beside the bed for a long time.

In the end, she didn't go get the stone back. Instead, she had several heaters brought in until the room was warm. Then she sat beside me and gently patted my back through the blanket.

"Tomorrow. I'll go back to that healer tomorrow and get you an even better one. Come on, Reed. Go to sleep."

Her voice was gentle, but somehow, no matter how warm the room became, I couldn't feel any of it.

The next day, she never went to see the healer because Fabian started coughing up blood again.

That winter, a rare snowstorm swept across the Blackthorn Frontier. The mountains were buried beneath the snow, and not even a bird could be seen.Adelaide never left. She built a crude shelter outside the wooden fence and stayed there like a stray dog with nowhere else to go.Every day, she ventured into the forest in search of the rarest medicinal herbs she could find, then left them outside the gate.Uriah never spared them a glance. He simply took them and fed them to the poisonous creatures he kept. One morning in early spring, sunlight broke through the toxic haze between the trees and spilled across the cottage window.I rested against the bed, looking at the first hint of green outside. My body felt lighter than it ever had before."Uriah," I called softly.Uriah came over carrying a bowl of medicine, his eyes rimmed red. "Come on, kid. Time for your medicine."I shook my head. "It's too bitter. I don't want it anymore."I reached out and caught a leaf that drifted in

I didn't pull away. I let her filthy, bloodstained hands close tightly around mine."Adelaide." I looked at her, my voice quiet. "Do you remember what you said when you first brought me home?"Adelaide froze.Of course she remembered. It had been winter five years ago when she'd pulled me, barely alive, from a pile of corpses. She'd carried me back to her estate, pointed to the courtyard filled with camellias, and said, "Reed, this is your home now. As long as I'm here, no one will ever hurt you."Tears spilled from Adelaide's eyes again, landing hot against the back of my hand."I remember... I remember everything..." She cried like a helpless child."If you remember..." I slowly pulled my hand from hers. "Then why were you the one who ended up hurting me the most?"Adelaide shuddered as if she'd been plunged into ice.It was true.Who had allowed the servants to dig up his camellia tree?Who had taken the stone that kept the cold poison under control and given it to anothe

I looked at the bag of candy.Once, it had been the only sweetness in my life. For a single piece, I'd once been willing to give up my life.I leaned forward slightly and looked into her eyes."General Knight, I don't eat sweets. The smell alone makes me sick."Adelaide's face instantly went white. The hand holding the candy began to shake violently."Reed...""Get out!" An angry shout came from inside the cottage. An elderly man with snow-white hair and a beard stormed outside, gripping a heavy wooden pestle. It was my mentor, Uriah. He marched up to Adelaide and kicked her squarely in the chest.Already weakened by the toxins in the forest, Adelaide went flying backward and crashed into the mud, coughing up a mouthful of black blood."Uriah," I called to him softly, stopping him before he could strike her again.Uriah pointed at Adelaide, furious. "You monster. You actually have the nerve to come here?"Do you have any idea what blood taken from the heart means to someone

Her eyes were red. "No one is taking Reed's place!"She left all her military duties to her second-in-command and traveled to the Blackthorn Frontier alone, convinced I was still alive. After all, this was where I'd come from, and medicinal herbs that could suppress the toxins in my body grew here."Reed..."Adelaide braced herself on her sword and dropped to one knee in the mud, gasping for breath. Her vision was beginning to blur. The toxins in the air had already entered her bloodstream.Just as she was about to collapse, the faint scent of medicinal herbs drifted toward her. Her head snapped up.Not far away stood a small cottage enclosed by a wooden fence. In the yard, a young man in a pale shirt sat with his back to her in a wheelchair, spreading medicinal herbs out on trays to dry. That slender figure… that profile…Adelaide's heart clenched so violently it seemed to stop."Reed!"Somehow, she found the strength to stand. She stumbled through the fence and rushed towa

This time, Adelaide didn't search blindly. She stood in the middle of the room, slowly scanning every corner. An elegant wooden box sat on the table. It was the keepsake box she'd given me.She walked over and slowly opened it.Inside, neatly arranged, were all the things she'd given me over the past five years: a gold pendant, an onyx charm, a little wooden toy, even a few pretty stones I'd treasured as though they were priceless.Only one thing was missing—the old, bloodstained clothes I'd been wearing when she first found me.Adelaide's heart skipped a beat. A kind of panic she'd never felt before swept over her."Find him! Search the entire city if you have to!" Her roar echoed through the estate.Squads of armed soldiers poured through the gates carrying lanterns, lighting up the silent streets of the capital.Adelaide rode through the snowstorm herself.Over and over, her mind replayed the moment the dagger had pierced my chest. The blood pouring from the wound, the col

  • A Promise Too Far   Chapter 5

By the time Adelaide returned to the guest wing with the empty bowl, evening had already fallen.Fabian had drunk the blood and fallen into a deep sleep. The doctor said the poison was finally gone from his system.Adelaide was in such a good mood that she even went to the kitchen herself and brought back a bowl of soup."Reed, wake up. I brought you something to eat."She pushed open the door. The room was dark."Still asleep?"She set the bowl on the table and lit a lamp. The dim light pushed back the darkness to reveal that the bed was empty. The blankets had been neatly folded, without a trace of warmth left in them.Adelaide frowned. "Reed?"She checked the closet. Empty. She looked behind the room divider. Nothing."Where did that little fool hide this time?" she muttered under her breath.Whenever I'd upset her or gotten my feelings hurt in the past, I'd hide somewhere on the estate: in the hayloft, behind the garden shed, or tucked away in some corner of the kitchen
