Chapter 4

Author: Huge Whale
Fabian needed one final treatment to neutralize the poison.

The doctor said this time, they needed an entire bowl of blood taken from near my heart.

Adelaide walked into the guest wing carrying a white ceramic bowl twice the size of the one she'd used last time.

She wouldn't look me in the eye. She simply set the bowl on the table and sat across from me.

"Reed, this is the last time."

Finally, she looked up, her eyes intent on mine. "Once he's better, I'll take you to Bellhaven. Haven't you always wanted to see the coastal towns? We'll buy a house there and fill the yard with the camellia trees you love."

She painted such a beautiful picture of our future. The old Reed probably would've jumped up like a fool, so happy he would've handed her his heart without a second thought.

But I only looked calmly at the empty bowl.

"I could die."

Adelaide froze. "What?"

"If you take that much blood from my chest, I could die." I looked her in the eye and repeated myself seriously.

Adelaide's expression darkened at once. She thought I was threatening her with my death.

"Reed, stop being ridiculous!" She shot to her feet, her voice turning stern. "The doctor examined you. Your body isn't like everyone else's. Losing this much blood isn't going to kill you!

"Fabian is fighting for his life. Are you really going to stand by and watch him die?"

She walked toward me. "I've taken care of you for five years. I've given you everything you needed and never let anyone mistreat you.

"Now I'm asking you for a little blood, and suddenly you're acting like you're going to die? Reed, I'm so disappointed in you."

Every word was like a dull blade slowly cutting into my heart. No blood was drawn, yet the pain went straight to the bone.

I looked at the anger and disappointment on her face and suddenly laughed.

"Okay."

My smile faded as I picked up the dagger from the table.

Adelaide visibly relaxed, a flicker of approval crossing her eyes. "Just hang in there, Reed. It'll be over soon."

She even came over and wrapped her hand around mine as I held the dagger.

I didn't resist. I let her guide my hand, positioning the sharp blade directly over the wound on my chest that hadn't even healed yet.

The blade pierced flesh with a soft sound. Blood immediately welled from the wound, running down the groove in the blade and dripping steadily into the white ceramic bowl.

Adelaide's eyes remained fixed on the bowl as she watched the level slowly rise.

She never looked at my face. She didn't see the color drain from my skin. She didn't see the cold sweat breaking out across my forehead.

All she could think about was that Fabian was going to be saved.

Finally, the bowl was full.

Adelaide immediately released my hand and picked up the bowl of warm blood. "Get some rest. I'll have someone bring you something nourishing later."

With that, she hurried out of the room without looking back. She didn't even spare a glance at the bloodstained dagger lying on the floor.

The room fell silent again.

I leaned against the bedpost, struggling for breath as unfamiliar images suddenly flashed through my mind: the names of hundreds—maybe thousands—of medicinal herbs, poisonous swamps in the far south, and somewhere among them, what seemed to be a blurred face.

I shook my head.

Blood was still flowing from my chest, soaking through my plain shirt. I didn't call for anyone.

Instead, I forced my trembling body to move and pulled my canvas bag from beneath the bed.

Then I took out a few scraps of cloth, clumsily pressed them against the wound, and bound them tightly around my chest.

When I was done, I slung the bag over my shoulder and opened the back door of the guest wing.

At some point, snow had begun to fall heavily outside.

I drew a deep breath. The icy air filled my lungs, clearing my head.

This time, I didn't look back. Step by step, I disappeared into the falling snow.

That winter, a rare snowstorm swept across the Blackthorn Frontier. The mountains were buried beneath the snow, and not even a bird could be seen.Adelaide never left. She built a crude shelter outside the wooden fence and stayed there like a stray dog with nowhere else to go.Every day, she ventured into the forest in search of the rarest medicinal herbs she could find, then left them outside the gate.Uriah never spared them a glance. He simply took them and fed them to the poisonous creatures he kept. One morning in early spring, sunlight broke through the toxic haze between the trees and spilled across the cottage window.I rested against the bed, looking at the first hint of green outside. My body felt lighter than it ever had before."Uriah," I called softly.Uriah came over carrying a bowl of medicine, his eyes rimmed red. "Come on, kid. Time for your medicine."I shook my head. "It's too bitter. I don't want it anymore."I reached out and caught a leaf that drifted in

I didn't pull away. I let her filthy, bloodstained hands close tightly around mine."Adelaide." I looked at her, my voice quiet. "Do you remember what you said when you first brought me home?"Adelaide froze.Of course she remembered. It had been winter five years ago when she'd pulled me, barely alive, from a pile of corpses. She'd carried me back to her estate, pointed to the courtyard filled with camellias, and said, "Reed, this is your home now. As long as I'm here, no one will ever hurt you."Tears spilled from Adelaide's eyes again, landing hot against the back of my hand."I remember... I remember everything..." She cried like a helpless child."If you remember..." I slowly pulled my hand from hers. "Then why were you the one who ended up hurting me the most?"Adelaide shuddered as if she'd been plunged into ice.It was true.Who had allowed the servants to dig up his camellia tree?Who had taken the stone that kept the cold poison under control and given it to anothe

I looked at the bag of candy.Once, it had been the only sweetness in my life. For a single piece, I'd once been willing to give up my life.I leaned forward slightly and looked into her eyes."General Knight, I don't eat sweets. The smell alone makes me sick."Adelaide's face instantly went white. The hand holding the candy began to shake violently."Reed...""Get out!" An angry shout came from inside the cottage. An elderly man with snow-white hair and a beard stormed outside, gripping a heavy wooden pestle. It was my mentor, Uriah. He marched up to Adelaide and kicked her squarely in the chest.Already weakened by the toxins in the forest, Adelaide went flying backward and crashed into the mud, coughing up a mouthful of black blood."Uriah," I called to him softly, stopping him before he could strike her again.Uriah pointed at Adelaide, furious. "You monster. You actually have the nerve to come here?"Do you have any idea what blood taken from the heart means to someone

Her eyes were red. "No one is taking Reed's place!"She left all her military duties to her second-in-command and traveled to the Blackthorn Frontier alone, convinced I was still alive. After all, this was where I'd come from, and medicinal herbs that could suppress the toxins in my body grew here."Reed..."Adelaide braced herself on her sword and dropped to one knee in the mud, gasping for breath. Her vision was beginning to blur. The toxins in the air had already entered her bloodstream.Just as she was about to collapse, the faint scent of medicinal herbs drifted toward her. Her head snapped up.Not far away stood a small cottage enclosed by a wooden fence. In the yard, a young man in a pale shirt sat with his back to her in a wheelchair, spreading medicinal herbs out on trays to dry. That slender figure… that profile…Adelaide's heart clenched so violently it seemed to stop."Reed!"Somehow, she found the strength to stand. She stumbled through the fence and rushed towa

This time, Adelaide didn't search blindly. She stood in the middle of the room, slowly scanning every corner. An elegant wooden box sat on the table. It was the keepsake box she'd given me.She walked over and slowly opened it.Inside, neatly arranged, were all the things she'd given me over the past five years: a gold pendant, an onyx charm, a little wooden toy, even a few pretty stones I'd treasured as though they were priceless.Only one thing was missing—the old, bloodstained clothes I'd been wearing when she first found me.Adelaide's heart skipped a beat. A kind of panic she'd never felt before swept over her."Find him! Search the entire city if you have to!" Her roar echoed through the estate.Squads of armed soldiers poured through the gates carrying lanterns, lighting up the silent streets of the capital.Adelaide rode through the snowstorm herself.Over and over, her mind replayed the moment the dagger had pierced my chest. The blood pouring from the wound, the col

  • A Promise Too Far   Chapter 5

By the time Adelaide returned to the guest wing with the empty bowl, evening had already fallen.Fabian had drunk the blood and fallen into a deep sleep. The doctor said the poison was finally gone from his system.Adelaide was in such a good mood that she even went to the kitchen herself and brought back a bowl of soup."Reed, wake up. I brought you something to eat."She pushed open the door. The room was dark."Still asleep?"She set the bowl on the table and lit a lamp. The dim light pushed back the darkness to reveal that the bed was empty. The blankets had been neatly folded, without a trace of warmth left in them.Adelaide frowned. "Reed?"She checked the closet. Empty. She looked behind the room divider. Nothing."Where did that little fool hide this time?" she muttered under her breath.Whenever I'd upset her or gotten my feelings hurt in the past, I'd hide somewhere on the estate: in the hayloft, behind the garden shed, or tucked away in some corner of the kitchen
