The beautiful alpine forests on either side of the US-50W didn’t charm Iris. Her heart somersaulted with happiness at the thought of uniting with her brothers after almost a month.

With urgent work coming up, Maddox had to check out immediately. But he hadn’t forgotten his promise, heading to Stanford University to meet the twins before returning home. She was indebted to him for prioritizing her. Yet her heart bled for what could have happened if they had stayed longer in Lake Tahoe.

They both had craved it. What if they never get another chance?

The future looked bleak with the latest mishap. Iris was very pleased to have the money in her bank, but she feared his family’s wrath. What if they punished her? With Maddox revolting against them, inevitably, all their wrath would fall on her. How would she handle it? What if Maddox’s parents recognized her? Iris dumped the last of her belongings into a suitcase and zipped it up. She sighed for the umpteenth time as she watched Maddox pace the porch and talk to Declan over the phone. While she was bursting with curiosity after his last admission, he seemed totally unaware of her condition. Ever since he had dropped the bombshell, he had been busy on his phone. His last words kept echoing in her head.I was lying in a coma at O’Connor General Hospital for the last two years. What did it mean? Why was he lying in a coma? What had happened to him? Before she could react, he received Declan’s call and walked away, leaving her hanging. From the few words she could overhear of their conversation, it was clear Maddox hadn’t returned home in the last two years.“Yes, ask Deborah to clean and sanitize the house. I’m bringing my family home.” He sounded so excited that it made Iris smile. She felt a little foolish for jumping to her own conclusions and escaping from the man who cared for her the mo

“No, you have no rights over us. It’s none of your business what I do with my life, Maddox. You lost me the day you married Lucille. Why are you here anyway? Go live with your wife and children and leave me alone.” She shoved him away and held the door open for him to leave.Maddox frowned at her allegations, refusing to budge. He wouldn’t leave without clearing the air between them. He wouldn’t leave without them. “Lucille is serving a prison term. Who told you I married her?” He watched the confused look on her face.Soon she recovered and scoffed at his question. “Whatever! Lucille gave me ample proof. So, don’t even try denying it. I know you were planning to marry her.”Maddox groaned in agony. He didn’t want this fight in front of his baby daughter. “How did you believe a criminal so easily, Iris? I’m here to take you and Esme home with me. So pack up. Now!” He strode towards Esme’s room.Iris rushed after him in a state of panic. “Stop ordering me around, Maddox. I’m not your w

“I can manage from here, dude. I’m perfectly fit now. Why don’t you return to LA and reopen Escapades?” Maddox alighted from Declan’s car at Alpine Farms. Excitement coursed through his body at the prospect of meeting Iris after so many years. He didn’t want Declan to tag along when he faced his lost love. He wanted her all to himself.“Are you sure? I can wait here for you.” Declan seemed to understand his situation.“I’m sure. I’ll manage.”“I’ll leave the car for you. I can use a cab.” Declan left, and Maddox walked into the farm. He frowned at the rustic setup. Why was Iris living on a farm? Did she move on with someone else?He asked around for Iris, and they directed him to her humble cottage. But to his disappointment, it was locked. Where did Iris go?He looked around to ask about her whereabouts. Did she escape again? He noticed a woman walking up to the adjacent cottage. He jogged up to her and stopped at a distance.“Hi! Do you know where Iris and her daughter went?”The wo

“He moved his fingers again!” Declan couldn’t contain his excitement. He had reached the hospital in record time and completed all the formalities promptly. The new treatment plan started, and the doctors monitored Maddox closely.“Yes, he’s responding to the treatment. Keep talking to the patient. He can hear you.” The nurse smiled as she injected the medicine.Declan’s heart swelled with hope as he sat beside his best friend. “Wake up, Maddox. There’s so much to do. You can’t lie here when you’re fit enough to lead a fulfilling life with Iris and your daughter. Yes, Iris has given birth to your daughter. Don’t you want to meet them?”Maddox moved his hand as if in response to his words. Declan’s eyes filled with tears. “You must be thinking how I know so much about Iris. I’m sorry, I met her brothers without your permission, bro. They told me where Iris is. Open your eyes, Maddox.” His voice trembled as tears streamed down his cheeks.A slight tremor went up Maddox’s body. Declan ro

Declan stared at his best friend’s fingers. Did he imagine them moving? In the last two years, Declan had done everything he could to help Maddox recover. Yet he sank into oblivion with each passing day. His body was functioning, but he refused to wake up. He had slipped into a coma the day after his accident with no signs of recovery ever since.
