Chapter 5

Author: Cher
My senses were slowly disappearing as I lay in a pool of blood and pain.

Memories of Damian and me flashed through my mind like scenes from a movie.

The first time we met, I charged at him like an angry little pup, and he easily subdued me. The first time I was overwhelmed by his Alpha scent, I was lost in him completely.

The shy morning after we first spent the night together. The gentle way he held me during stormy nights. The nights he stayed up taking care of me when I was sick. How I secretly prepared for the bonding ceremony, filled with hope and excitement…

Every memory was so clear, every detail carved deep into my memory.

But in the end, all those beautiful moments were shattered by reality.

My last memory froze on that final scene. He shielded Clara without hesitation, while I was left pinned beneath the falling rack.

So that was how things were. When it truly mattered, his instincts would always drive him to protect her, not me.

Through the haze, I heard the wail of an ambulance, Clara's sobbing, and Damian's panicked shouting.

But none of it seemed to matter anymore.

Then, everything faded to black.

When I woke, it was already noon the next day. The hospital ward was quiet except for the steady beeping of machines.

"You're finally awake!" The nurse let out a sigh of relief. "You took a blow to the head, but luckily, your life isn't in danger."

I tried to sit up, but pain shot through my whole body. My left shoulder was especially painful. Slowly, everything came back. It felt like last night's events had just happened.

Then, I heard familiar voices through a thin curtain.

"It's all my fault. If only I'd reacted faster..." Clara's voice was thick with tears and guilt as she sobbed.

"It's not your fault. Don't blame yourself," Damian said, his voice gentler than I had ever heard. "You've always had a weak constitution. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still save you first."

That sentence was like a blade, cutting deep into my heart.

Even if he had to choose again, he would still choose her.

He was so clear about it. So certain. No hesitation.

"But Aurora got hurt..." Clara sounded even more upset.

"She'll be fine. The doctor said it's just some external injuries," Damian reassured her. "But you're different. You can't afford any accidents."

I bit down hard on my lip, trying to stay silent.

Tears slid down my cheeks, soaking the pillow.

So this was my place in his heart. I could be sacrificed, because I would be "fine."

"It's okay. Don't cry anymore," Damian continued softly. "Go rest, don't wear yourself out."

Footsteps came closer, and the curtain slid open. Damian appeared at my bedside, still looking worried, but the moment he saw I was awake, that worry turned into something more complicated.

"You're awake?" He sat beside the bed, reaching out to check my forehead. "How do you feel?"

I avoided his hand, meeting his eyes calmly. "Thank you for saving me. I'll pay you back for the hospital bill in two weeks."

Damian's hand froze midair, and he frowned. "What are you talking about?"

He seemed thrown off by my strange calm, a flicker of confusion and concern in his eyes. Why did I keep saying "two weeks"?

"Aurora, you…"

He looked completely at a loss, unsettled by how I was acting.

In the past, I would have cried, demanded answers, and become hysterical. Now, I didn't want to do anything at all.

Loving someone...was really exhausting.

"I'll stay here and look after you," he said, sitting down.

But just then, his phone rang.

"Alpha, Clara's foundation website is under attack. Sensitive data could be leaked," his personal assistant said anxiously through the receiver.

Damian's expression changed instantly as he stood up at once.

"I have an urgent matter to take care of," he said, glancing at me. "I'll come see you later."

He left quickly, not even looking back.

Clara again.

It was always Clara.

I stared at the closed door, my heart a mess of complicated emotions.

I shut my eyes and let the tears fall.

[Aurora's Perspective]On the twenty-seventh day of my imprisonment, I finally learned how to disguise myself. I stopped resisting. I stopped refusing food and even started talking to Damian of my own accord."The weather's so nice today." I stood by the window, my voice soft.Damian set the document in his hand down, a hint of surprise and joy in his eyes. "Aurora?""Yeah." I turned and smiled at him. "I've thought it through. Since I can't escape, I might as well accept reality."He crossed the room, wanting to pull me into his arms. I didn't move away and simply let him embrace me."I knew you would understand." His voice trembled. "We can start over.""Yes." I gently stroked his back. "Start over.""Can I rest a bit now? I feel so tired," I continued. He relaxed and soothed me, "I'll eat with you later. You get some sleep first." Then, he left for his study to work. The moment he was gone, I pulled a micro-communicator from under the mattress.Three days ago, I stole i

  • A Regret in Red   Chapter 21

[Aurora's Perspective]Damian had to leave for three days because of urgent work back at his company, and I finally saw my chance. The moment I smashed the glass, the sound of the glass shattering rang painfully sharp in the empty room.I picked up the sharpest shard and pressed it against my wrist. Blood welled up instantly, dripping down my pale skin and staining the white sheets. The red light of the security camera blinked quietly in the corner. I knew Damian would see it soon.Sure enough, less than an hour later, I heard the roar of a helicopter approaching.Bang! The door was violently kicked open. Damian stormed in, prying the glass from my hand."Are you insane?" His voice shook. "You want to die that much?"I looked up at him in complete calm. "That's my choice.""You don't have the right to die!" Damian grabbed my shoulders, shaking me so hard it hurt. You're my Mate!""So what?" I let out a chuckle. "You really think you can control whether I live or die?"He f

[Aurora's Perspective]"This is my private island," Damian said, pointing to the moonlit stretch of land below as the helicopter was about to land. "There's nothing but ocean all around. The nearest land is fifty nautical miles away."Then, he looked at me. "Even if you tried to swim for it, I wouldn't recommend it."He dragged me out of the helicopter, and my feet stepped into the soft sand.In the distance stood a Western-style manor, beautiful yet eerie under the moonlight."Welcome to your new home." Damian untied my wrists. "I spent a long time turning this place into something you would love. There's a fully-equipped design studio here. You can create designs for anything you want." "Kidnapping and imprisonment." My voice was cold. "This is your solution?""If it keeps you by my side, it's worth it," Damian said as he led me toward the manor. Every decor here really was done according to my tastes. Moonlit gardens, a glass-walled studio, even the soft color palette I ha

  • A Regret in Red   Chapter 19

[Aurora's Perspective]The day before the bonding ceremony, I was in my suite, double-checking the plans for tomorrow. My fingers traced the diamonds on my Luna dress. The laurel crown sat ready on the vanity.Sunlight poured through the windows. Outside, the house staff were busy decorating for the wedding tomorrow. Everything felt perfect.A knock came at the door."Come in," I said.Alexander entered, carrying a beautiful tray with my favorite blueberry scones."These were specially flown in," he said with a gentle smile. "You once told me these were your mother's favorite dessert."I was surprised. "You actually remembered something so trivial?""I remember everything about you." Alexander sat down beside me. "After tomorrow, you'll be my Luna."His voice was full of hope and quiet joy."Alexander." I turned to look at him. "You really won't regret this? Taking in a woman who's been through so much?""Aurora." He gently brushed my cheek. "You saved me. That rainy night

[Aurora's Perspective]"Blackmoon Pack and Risingdawn Pack have never really gotten along. Why is Damian here?"The guests' whispers rippled through the ballroom.Damian stood in the doorway, perfectly dressed but radiating a wild energy. His dark gaze never left my hand, which still held Alexander's tightly."Is he here to take Miss Aurora away? That's terrifying!"His overwhelming Alpha aura rolled through the ballroom, making it hard for anyone to breathe."Aurora." His voice was dangerously low. "Come back with me."I felt Alexander's hand tense around mine as he instinctively stepped in front of me, shielding me.I met Damian's eyes calmly. "Why are you here? You're not welcome."For a split second, pain flickered in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by anger. "You're coming with me today. Nothing is going to stop me!""Go back?" I let out a cold chuckle. "Go back for what? To watch you and Clara act like everything's perfect?""No!" Damian strode forward, but the b

"But I was sixteen back then, and you were only twelve. I'm four years older than you," I said, almost in disbelief. "You really fell for me at first sight at that age?"Alexander blushed, nodding. "Yeah! I've been looking for you for ten years, because you were really beautiful. Just like a diamond in the sky."I had heard people call me pretty a thousand times, but coming from Alexander, it felt different.Maybe it was the way his eyes were so honest. There was no pretense at all, as if he was holding his whole heart out for me to see."What else did I say?" I tried to recall every detail from that rainy night."You told me, 'If you're really grateful, grow up and protect me someday.' I remembered it for ten years." Alexander's voice was gentle. The memories flooded back. That skinny boy really did say he would protect me. I had only said that to comfort him. I never thought he would take it to heart for a decade."So, was the poisoning fake? The arranged marriage, too?" I as
