LOGINNatalia listened to the laughter and murmurs coming from the living room. It seemed incredible to her that, after everything that had just happened, there was something to celebrate.
She walked slowly down the stairs, still carrying the weight of humiliation, but feeling a growing sense of determination.
When she arrived, she saw Simón’s mother and Aunt Cristina, both surrounding Isabella with beaming smiles, as if they had welcomed a movie star.
They were all laughing and chatting happily, but when they noticed Natalia’s presence, their smiles vanished instantly.
“Look who decided to show up,” said Simón’s mother with a venomous smile. “The shameless Natalia.”
“I’m not the shameless one here,” Natalia replied, her voice trembling but firm. “It’s that woman,” she pointed at Isabella, “my husband’s mistress. How can you have her here as if she were a guest of honor?”
Simón’s mother snorted, crossing her arms while his aunt nodded with a stern expression.
“You’re the only shameless one,” retorted Nelly, Simon’s mother, in an icy tone. “You married my son through lies and deceit. Isabella would never have let you take her place at the altar if you hadn’t betrayed her in such a horrendous way.”
Natalia felt a growing rage burning in her chest.
She was tired of repeating the same story, one that no one seemed willing to believe. Isabella had orchestrated everything, asking for her help and then betraying her. But, as always, Natalia was left looking like the villain.
“How long will they keep believing her lies?” Natalia snapped in frustration. “Isabella was the one who asked me for help because she wanted to run away with an old flame. It was all a trap!”
“Shut up already!” Simón’s voice thundered from the doorway, where he stood leaning against the frame, watching her with disdain. “Go back to your room, Natalia. I don’t want to see you down here.”
“What?” Natalia looked at him, incredulous. “Now you’re going to kick me out of my own house too?”
Simón took a step forward, his face grim.
“I warned you I didn’t want you here,” he hissed angrily, clenching his fists. “If you insist on staying, I’ll throw you out onto the street like a mangy dog. Don’t make me do it.”
Natalia felt a chill run down her spine. It was winter, and it was freezing cold. Didn’t he care if she froze?
“It’s snowing, Simon…” she replied, trying to control the tremor in her voice. “You can’t do this to me.”
“That’s not my problem,” he replied coldly. “Behave yourself or leave. And don’t forget to apologize to Isabella for breaking her nose.”
Natalia let out a sigh of disbelief.
“Apologize to that lying bitch?” she snapped, clenching her fists.
Simón’s slap was so fast she didn’t have time to react. The blow echoed through the room, and the humiliation burned more than the pain.
Natalia froze for a second, feeling everyone’s eyes on her, but then something shifted inside her chest. The lump in her throat dissolved, and in its place, a surge of resolve flooded her.
“All right, Simón,” she said, lifting her head, her cheek still burning. “You don’t have to worry anymore. We’re getting divorced tomorrow.
A deathly silence fell over the room. Open mouths and incredulous stares filled the space.
Everyone knew how much Natalia had loved Simón for years, how she had endured every humiliation hoping that one day he would truly see her. But now, that love was fading away.
Simón looked at her with a mixture of surprise and contempt.
“Are you sure about what you’re saying?” he asked her with a threatening hiss. “Because once we’re in court, there’ll be no turning back.”
“I would never go back to you,” Natalia replied, her words laden with a resolve she had never felt before. “You’re no longer worthy of that.”
She turned on her heel and headed for the door, head held high and her dignity restored. Just as she was about to step out into the garden for a breath of cold air, she heard Simón muttering under his breath.
“Fine. I hope you don’t regret this later!”
Natalia didn’t respond. She knew, with every fiber of her being, that she would never regret leaving him.
Natalia sank onto the garden bench, feeling the cold winter wind sting her cheeks, still red from the slap. Despite the courage she had shown in front of everyone, now that she was alone, she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
She had stayed strong, but reality hit her with full force: she had loved Simón for years, a love she now had to tear from her heart.
“How do you get over a love that’s lasted so many years?” she thought, covering her face with her hands.
Tears fell onto her trembling palms, and every sob made her feel more vulnerable.
How do you move forward when everything you’ve ever dreamed of crumbles before your eyes?
She had endured two years of abuse and humiliation, hoping he would change, that one day he would look at her with love. But that day never came.
“Why was I so stupid?” she chided herself over and over. “I should have left sooner; I should have walked away when I still had some dignity left.”
Now, the pain was crushing her, and even though she had taken the brave step toward divorce, she couldn’t help but feel the emptiness in her chest.
Simón had been her life, her hope, and now, having decided to leave him, she felt as though she had lost a part of herself.
A short while later, the doctor strode out of the emergency room door, clipboard in hand, looking around for someone.“Are you relatives of Natalia Benavides?” he asked in a deep, authoritative voice.Simon and Daniel jumped almost at the same time, their gazes locking in a silent challenge. Both frowned, the air between them thick with tension. Simon clenched his fists instinctively, unsure why this man provoked him so much, while Daniel remained calm, though his eyes betrayed genuine concern. The doctor watched them curiously, confused by their presence.“Who is a relative?” he pressed, sensing the tension.Isabella took a step forward, opening her mouth to speak up, but Delia stepped in, her voice clear and firm.“We’re family. He,” she said, pointing at Daniel, “is Natalia’s brother, and I’m a very close friend.” The lie slipped from her lips without hesitation, cutting off any attempt by Isabella to intervene. The doctor nodded, asking no further questions, and told them they cou
Isabella watched as the paramedics loaded Natalia into the ambulance with the same look of boredom she’d been directing at her sister for years. She crossed her arms, sighing in exasperation, while Delia finished giving instructions for Natalia to be taken to the hospital.“Natalia always likes to draw attention to herself,” she muttered, not caring if anyone heard her.The coldness in her tone echoed in the uncomfortable silence left behind when the ambulance siren fell silent.Simon, who had been watching everything from a distance, stood up from the chair he was sitting in, as if something inside him were pushing him to follow the ambulance.Isabella, noticing his movement, raised an eyebrow and stopped him with a look.“Where are you going?” she asked listlessly, as if she didn’t expect an answer.Simon pointed toward the ambulance, which was beginning to slowly drive away down the street.“Aren’t you going to go with your sister?” he asked, his voice heavy with a concern that too
“I’ll soon be a free woman,” she said firmly. “I’m giving Simon Cáceres to you, bow and all. I’ll keep what belongs to me.”Isabella tensed, and her smile vanished instantly. She took a step forward, her eyes filled with rage.“Were you really so damn wicked as to ask Simon for Villa Azul?” she spat through clenched teeth, venom dripping from every word.Natalia let out a hollow laugh, her gaze defiant.“Grandmother Rebeca told me that property belonged to me,” she replied, relishing the sight of frustration burning in Isabella’s eyes. “That’s why I asked for it in the divorce settlement.”Isabella clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white.“You knew. You knew I wanted Villa Azul, and that’s why you manipulated Simon.” “You’re a damn harpy!” she accused, her voice trembling with contained fury. Before Natalia could respond, Isabella glanced toward the bar, where Simon had begun calling out to her. Suddenly, Isabella stumbled awkwardly forward, letting out a small cr
Night was falling over the city, and the restaurant’s lights shone with a deceptive warmth.Natalia sat down at one of the tables by the window, while the cool air drifted in through the glass, contrasting with the emotional turmoil consuming her. When Delia arrived, she hugged her so tightly that Natalia felt she might break. It was a hug that spoke louder than a thousand words, a refuge in the midst of the storm.“I’m not going to ask if you’re okay,” Delia said, stepping back to look Natalia in the eyes. “I can tell you’re tired.”Natalia gave a sad smile and let out a sigh.“I’m emotionally exhausted. But I’ll get through this soon,” she replied, searching her words for the conviction she lacked.Delia, always the more persuasive one, sat down across from her and rested her elbows on the table, leaning in a little.“How about we have a drink?” she suggested, as if alcohol could wash away all her friend’s troubles. You need to relax and have some fun.Natalia shook her head, her ga
News of the breakup between Natalia and Simón Cáceres quickly spread like wildfire through social circles. Rumors about the return of Isabella, Simón’s former lover, only fueled the fire further, turning the scandal into something nearly uncontrollable. Some internet users were quick to question Natalia. So many things were being said: that she was a gold digger, that she had manipulated Simón into marrying her, that she was an unscrupulous woman. But as Natalia well knew, appearances could be deceiving, and soon, the truth would change that narrative. The next day, Simón arrived punctually at the courthouse. His impeccable appearance made him stand out amid the commotion: a dark suit, a perfectly knotted tie, an inscrutable face.Despite the media storm, he stood as an unshakable fortress. Upon entering, his eyes met Natalia’s; she was already seated there with a serene expression, though her gaze followed him with a mix of curiosity and caution. She stood up when she saw him app
Simón raised an eyebrow, looking at Natalia with a mixture of disdain and mockery. The silence between them was thick, heavy with unspoken resentment. “You’ve got a knack even for faking dignity,” he snapped, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe.The words hit her like an unexpected blow, but Natalia barely flinched. She was sick of those cruel games. She kept her gaze steady, refusing to show him how much his comments affected her.“Think what you will, Simón,” she replied coldly, her voice firm but weary. It wasn’t worth arguing any further. She had decided not to remain tied to that toxicity.Without waiting for his reaction, she turned away, walking away from him with her body tense. The luxury car was waiting for her at the entrance, with the driver Roger at the wheel, starting the engine in the cold of the night. Natalia walked down the stairs with her head held high and heavy suitcases in each hand, as if they carried the weight of the past few years. When she saw t
