Soline’s POV

I’ve hardly slept in days.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Alain’s voice again — broken, desperate, cut off by dead static.

“Help…”

Then nothing.

Nothing but silence that wrapped around my throat like a rope.

I sat curled on the thin mattress of the tiny rented room in Marseille, knees pulled to my chest, listening to every sound in the hallway. I’d registered under a fake name. Paid in cash. Covered my hair with a scarf and kept the curtains drawn tight.

But the fear never left.

Every creak of the wooden floorboards made my breath stop. Every passing shadow under the door made my heart slam itself against my ribs. I kept expecting Genevieve’s men to burst inside and drag me out. Or to just kill me right here.

The fact that no one came was somehow worse.

Silence meant nothing was happening. Nothing happening meant something would.

Eventually.

It terrified me, wondering when they would come and what they could do to me.

Perhaps I should move somewhere far away whil

Damien’s POVThe shift in Celeste was instant. One moment she was smiling softly, the glow of homecoming still clinging to her like light. The next, her entire face collapsed in on itself, eyes widening, the color draining so fast it made my stomach drop.“What is it?” Harper asked quickly, stepping closer.Celeste’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She swallowed hard, forcing breath into her lungs, forcing control into hands that suddenly wouldn’t stay still.“They…” Her voice cracked. She tried again. “They found a man’s body. On the coast. It matches Alain’s description.”The room went silent.Like every laugh, every warm scent from the food, every bit of sunlight had been sucked out and replaced with cold air that scraped the lungs.Celeste stared at nothing, eyes fixed on a point past all of us, like the news had hit her so hard her mind couldn’t fully catch up.She didn’t cry. Didn’t break or fall apart. She was just there, looking shocked and hollow. Michael was the first t

Nico’s POVI had no idea what the hell was happening to me.For the past three days, I’d been waking up before my alarm.Me. The guy who used to show up to ranch work five minutes late with a hangover and a smirk. Now?I was always the first one at the stables. And I hated—hated—that the reason had a name.It was embarrassing. Infuriating. Impossible to explain. But every time she shot me one of those annoyed looks, every time she told me to tie a knot properly or stop scaring the damn horses, something inside me… switched on.Like I suddenly had something to prove. Like I wanted her to see me differently.Which was stupid. She wasn’t even nice to me. Not once. Not even accidentally. This morning was no exception.I spotted her brushing down one of the mares, braid slipping over her shoulder, sunlight catching the little wisps of hair around her face. It made my silly, stupid heart race. I sauntered over. “Morning.”She didn’t look up. “You’re early.”“Is that a compliment?”“It’s an

Genevieve’s POVThose photographs. Those years of me pinned on his walls like I was some rare specimen.I kept replaying them in my mind while he moved around the cabin, humming under his breath as if nothing were wrong. As if my entire life hadn’t just been dissected and catalogued behind a wooden panel. How in God’s name did he get those pictures? He wasn’t much older than me—twenty-eight, maybe twenty-nine. The snapshots from the orphanage had to be nearly twenty years old. Back then, access was restricted. No visitors. No outsiders. Only staff and the occasional sponsor. So how did a strange boy slip in with a camera? He couldn’t have.Someone had given him those photos. Perhaps he’d gotten hold of them later on. But who?!The thought made bile rise in my throat.I wrapped my arms around myself, staring at the uneven planks of the floor, trying to breathe without making a sound. There was a part of me—a foolish, broken part—that wanted to feel flattered. Wanted to believe the obse

Celeste’s POVIf love could take physical form, it would have been the way they all clung to me—arms around my shoulders, hands gripping mine, voices overlapping with relief and trembling laughter. I felt wrapped in something fierce and soft at the same time. For a moment, I didn’t even feel my leg. Or the lingering nausea from the helicopter. Or the ache in my chest that had lived there for days. When we finally moved toward the house, Auntie Eleanor squeezed my waist. “Come, darling. We prepared something special.”I expected a quiet lunch. Something simple. Calm.I didn’t expect… this. The moment the front doors opened, warmth rushed out—golden lights, the scent of herbs and butter, music softly echoing through the living room. A long table was set near the windows overlooking the gardens. Plates of my favorite Provençal dishes filled it—ratatouille, daube stew, freshly baked fougasse, lavender chicken, even the mushroom truffle soup I adored. And dessert—God. A tower of macarons.

Celeste’s POVI’d been pacing the hotel room for ten minutes before I realized how ridiculous I looked.Back and forth.Back and forth. As if wearing a line into the carpet could erase the memory of last night—the almost-kiss that still pulsed beneath my skin like a bruise made of heat.I stopped by the dresser, fingers curling over the edge as I tried to steady myself.Paris still glittered through the window, impossibly bright and beautiful, but the sight only made my stomach twist.I wasn’t supposed to feel this way around him anymore. Not after the hell he’d put me through before. But to be honest, though, that felt like a lifetime ago already. I blew out a breath and moved to the bathroom, splashing water on my face, trying to cool the heat crawling up my neck. My leg throbbed when I shifted my weight—dull, manageable pain. Definitely better today. Small mercies.I smoothed my clothes, tightened my ponytail, checked the mirror to make sure I looked composed and untouched by anyt
