Madison

Alexander sat down behind his desk, motioning for me to take a seat across from him. I perched on the edge of the chair, tablet balanced on my knee.

"How's your mother doing today?" he asked, his voice softer than I expected.

The question caught me off guard. "She's... fine. Trying to cook pancakes this morning despite doctor's orders to rest."

A small smile played at the corner of his lips. "Sounds like someone else I know who doesn't follow instructions."

"I follow instructions just fine, Mr. Knight," I replied, raising an eyebrow. "When they make sense."

"Debatable." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "Have you thought about what we discussed last night?"

So we were jumping right into it. No small talk, no buffer. Typical Alexander.

"I've thought about it," I said carefully.

"And?"

"And I haven't decided yet." I met his gaze steadily. "It's not a simple decision."

"I see."

"Is that all you wanted to discuss?" I asked, keeping my voice neutral.

Madison"We'll keep it private for now." A small smile played on his lips. "You drive a hard bargain, Ms. Harper." Relief washed over me. "Thank you." "Don't thank me yet." He took another step closer, his voice dropping to that low register that always sent shivers down my spine. "I might want something in return." I raised an eyebrow, fighting to keep my expression neutral despite the heat blooming in my chest. "That's not how negotiations work, Mr. Knight." "No?" His smile turned wolfish. "I seem to recall several very successful negotiations in this very office that ended quite... satisfactorily for both parties." My cheeks warmed at the memories his words evoked. "That was different." "Was it?" He reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered against my skin. "How so?" I stepped back, needing space to think clearly. "We're discussing the terms of our arrangement. It's business." "Maddie, nothing about us has ever been just business." The nickn

MadisonI shook my head with a smile as I closed the bathroom door behind me. The shower hissed to life, steam quickly filling the small space as I stepped under the hot spray. Water cascaded down my back, and I closed my eyes, letting it wash over me. Of course, my mind immediately drifted to Alexander. His words from last night echoed in my head, mixing with the steady drumbeat of water against the tile. What did he mean by "more"? More time? More control? More... us? I scrubbed shampoo into my hair with unnecessary force. The man was infuriating. One minute, it was all business; the next, looking at me with those intense eyes that made my knees weak. And now he wanted to make our arrangement public? Absolutely not. "Just a contract," I reminded myself, rinsing my hair. "Just business." But business deals didn't usually involve meeting mothers or late-night whiskey conversations or the way his hand felt at the small of my back. I groaned, turning my face directly into the spra

MadisonI woke to the sound of clattering in the kitchen. Sunlight streamed through my curtains as I squinted at my phone. 7:13 AM. I groaned, burying my face in my pillow for a moment before another crash jolted me fully awake. "Mom?" I called, throwing back the covers and padding toward the kitchen. I found her standing amid an array of pots and pans, looking slightly guilty. "Morning, sweetheart!" she said with excessive cheer. "I was just going to make us some breakfast." I crossed my arms, leaning against the doorframe. "What happened to resting?" "I've been resting for weeks in that hospital. I'm fine." She reached for a mixing bowl, wincing slightly as she stretched. "Uh-huh." I moved forward, gently taking the bowl from her hands. "Sit. I'll make breakfast." "Madison, I'm perfectly capable—" "Dr. Williams specifically said you need to rest for at least two to three weeks." I guided her toward a chair at the small kitchen table. "No cooking, no cleaning, no strenuous ac

MadisonThe rest of the meal passed with a few more snippets of conversation, mostly about mundane things: the weather, a new movie Mom wanted to see, and the neighbor's dog that wouldn't stop barking. After dinner, I cleared the table and began washing the dishes. The warm, soapy water was a welcome distraction from my swirling thoughts, and the rhythmic motion of scrubbing the plates offered a semblance of peace. Mom, meanwhile, settled on the couch with one of her beloved mystery novels, her glasses perched at the tip of her nose as she lost herself in the pages. "I think I'm going to turn in early," I announced, drying the last plate. "It's been a long day." "Jet lag catching up with you?" Mom asked without looking up from her book. "Something like that." "Sleep well, sweetheart." I retreated to my bedroom, closing the door behind me with a soft click. After the luxury of Alexander's penthouse, the familiar space felt both comforting and confining. I changed into my pajamas

MadisonI unlocked my apartment door as quietly as possible, not wanting to wake my mother. The living room was dark, but a faint light spilled from under her bedroom door. I kicked off my heels and padded toward it, listening for any sounds. "Mom?" I called softly, knocking gently. "Come in, sweetheart." I pushed the door open to find her propped up in bed, reading a magazine. My magazine. With Alexander's face on the cover. "Really, Mom?" I groaned, leaning against the doorframe. She grinned, unrepentant. "Just doing some research on my future son-in-law." "He's not—we're not—" I sputtered, then took a deep breath. "It's still very new." "Hmm." She flipped a page, studying it intently. "Says here he's very wealthy." "Money isn't everything." "Says the girl who's been working extra hours to pay my medical bills." She set the magazine aside, her expression softening. "He seems to care about you." I crossed my arms defensively. "You met him for all of thirty minutes." "A mot
