Chapter 9

Author: Hibernation
Brenda had always been family-oriented before Cameron had showed up. She'd said that Timmy and I were the only ones that mattered. We'd been happy then, but everything had changed after Cameron's return.

Brenda had stopped caring about Timmy's education and insisted on transferring him to Josie's kindergarten. Because of that, he'd been forced to attend classes meant for those younger than him.

At the time, Timmy would secretly shed tears every day. When I discovered this, he would blame himself for Brenda not loving him, saying it was because he was a bad student.

I'd held him close and consoled him. "It's not your fault, Timmy. Your mother is just busy with work. You're the best kiddo in this family, okay?"

I'd made excuses for Brenda, but she'd completely abandoned her duties as a mother. During parent-teacher conferences, she would attend as Josie's godmother, but she refused to show up as Timmy's mother.

Everyone praised her for being a responsible mother, but I knew she was

After Cameron got it into his head that he wasn't getting a million dollars out of Brenda and me, he threw caution to the wind and pulled out a bottle of rubbing alcohol that he'd swiped from a clinic. He held a lighter up to it, shouting, "Let's all die together, then! I won't let you guys have your happily-ever-after if my daughter dies! We can all go to hell to be with her!"Just then, someone pounded on the door. The police had arrived! They kicked down the door and easily subdued Cameron. They also informed him that the kidnappers had set Josie free. She was safe and sound. That did nothing to make the hatred in his eyes dissipate, though. He was later arrested and charged before being thrown behind bars after the police found out that he'd used his daughter to harm someone. The day he was taken away, Josie bid him goodbye. She knew nothing and thought he was going to work. She waved happily and said, "Remember to come see me, Dad!"As I watched her, it made me realize that

It was at that very moment that Timmy woke up!He cracked his eyes open and recognized Cameron as his classmate's father. He said, "Mister, I hope Josie ended up okay."Cameron froze, giving me the chance to tackle him to the floor and pin him down. Meanwhile, Brenda ran to Timmy and asked whether he was okay. She could barely speak through her tears, and she kept apologizing while holding him. She also kept saying she was so glad he was alive. She didn't forgive Cameron, though. After all, there was no denying that Josie had caused Timmy to end up in a coma.Cameron broke free of my hold when he saw things settle down. He ran to the door and locked it before shouting, "You three may be a happy family now, but don't forget that my daughter was kidnapped! Give me a million dollars now, or we'll all die here today!"Brenda retorted, "You brought all of this upon yourself! You should be counting your blessings that you don't need to go to jail since Timmy is still alive! If not for

Brenda didn't contact me anymore after that day, saying that she would stay away since Timmy didn't want to see her.As I looked down at Timmy, who was still unconscious, I was glad that I'd come to my senses before it was too late. At least things hadn't become too bad.If Timmy had actually died, even making Brenda go with him wouldn't be enough of a punishment! Thanks to my consistent efforts, Timmy went from being totally unresponsive to occasionally twitching a finger. The doctor said it was a good sign and that it was likely that he would regain consciousness soon.Unexpectedly, Cameron found out which hospital we were at. When the nurse called me, all she said was that someone had barged into the hospital ward in a rage, yelling for Timmy. Based on her description, my gut told me it was Cameron.By the time I hurried back, Cameron had disguised himself as a doctor and wanted to strangle Timmy."Cameron, stop! Let Timmy go!" I yelled. When he saw me, he dropped the act and

Linda was arrested for the sale of illegal health supplements, and her stash was discovered at home. I figured she would probably be spending the rest of her life behind bars.Brenda wept and apologized to me after learning the truth, even saying that she would make it up to me.I thought about Timmy, who was still in a coma. Hatred surged within me. I wouldn't forgive anyone who'd ever hurt Timmy! Never again! After finally realizing that I would never forgive her, Brenda suggested wanting to do what was expected of her as a mother. It would soon be a week since Timmy's "death". I wasn't going to do anything, seeing as he wasn't actually dead. However, Brenda insisted on having a day of prayer service for him.An idea occurred to me when she suggested that, and I agreed to it.When the day came, she'd hired someone to handle everything. The prayers would happen before Timmy's fake gravestone.Brenda could barely breathe through her sobs during the prayers, and she kneeled befor

To wake Timmy up, I went home to take the toys that Linda had thought of as trash. To my surprise, as soon as I entered the apartment, I saw her acting sneakily. She was holding a stack of documents that caught my attention.I cleared my throat, startling her. She dropped the documents, and one of them with an official stamp stood out in particular. It turned out to be the termination paperwork from my previous company. There was another reason that I'd been let go. Initially, I thought it was just a snap decision by the company's higher-ups. It didn't help that Brenda, who'd been busy with work, had constantly persuaded me into quitting. I'd caved and agreed without much thought, leaving my job after taking the severance pay.Later, Linda had taken all of the money to buy scam health supplements. Now, she looked guilty that she'd been caught. She said, "You can't blame me for this! Blame yourself for being useless!"I couldn't believe she was turning this on me. I said, "Don'
