Chapter 2

Author: Litchi Froot
Even though every feature of Charlie's face was so familiar to me, as I looked at him now, he felt like a complete stranger.

Frowning at the pathetic state I was in, he pulled me up with a practiced gentleness.

Then, dropping to one knee, he meticulously adjusted my prosthetic back into place.

A bitter sting hit the back of my nose, and I fought to keep the tears back. "Why did you lie to me?"

After a full day of busking, my voice was completely shot. It sounded grating and raw.

Charlie's grip suddenly tightened, and a sharp flare of agony from my residual limb made me gasp.

His tone turned ice-cold. "You shouldn't have shown up in front of Denise."

He thought I had confronted her on purpose.

I stared at him in utter disbelief. Tears trembled on the edge of my lashes.

"If you hadn't been playing poor this whole time, do you really think I'd choose to drag my ruined leg around the streets just to busk for a living?"

I lost control and shoved Charlie, but he caught my hand and, in one smooth motion, lifted me into his arms and placed me in the back seat.

On the dashboard sat a framed photo of Charlie and Denise.

Charlie leaned over to click my seatbelt into place. His next words froze the blood in my veins.

"I made it big by the second year of my new startup. The debts were cleared ages ago. I only kept up the act to fool you.

"Denise is my partner in an arranged marriage. Since marrying her, my business has skyrocketed. I'm the wealthiest man in Seabrook now.

"Rach, you don't know what money means until you've lost it all. I wasn't about to pass up the heiress of the Gordon family just to squeeze into a miserable life with you."

My vision blurred with tears as memories rushed back like a volley of knives.

After his bankruptcy, Charlie had been buried under a mountain of debt, spiraling into despair in that cramped rental night after night.

I stayed up with bloodshot eyes, not daring to close them for fear that Charlie would do something reckless.

When the loan sharks finally tracked us down, I threw myself over Charlie to protect him. A frantic thug brought a blade down, severing my right leg.

As I lay pooling in blood, Charlie fell to his knees before them for the very first time, screaming at the top of his lungs, "I'll pay you back! Every single cent! Just please, take her to the hospital!"

After getting discharged, I buried my own despair. I forced myself to adapt to life as a cripple, pretending everything was fine just to be his rock.

I scrounged for discarded vegetables at the market and glued broken bowls back together.

I even used the cheapest prosthetic available, refusing to replace it even when it had worn my flesh raw and bloody.

I didn't even allow myself a birthday cake to celebrate.

Yet, to celebrate Valentine's Day with Denise, Charlie had ordered a custom ring worth millions of dollars.

My frugality was nothing but a joke.

A wave of sheer hopelessness consumed me, and I began pounding my fists against Charlie like a maniac. "You bastard! How could you do this to me?"

Charlie slammed on the brakes and turned around to glare at me. "What did I do wrong? Was I supposed to cling to some fairy-tale love and rot in a basement with you for the rest of my life? Rachel Marsh, grow up!"

The tears spilled over uncontrollably.

Under my devastated gaze, Charlie threw the door open and shoved me right out of the car.

My prosthetic broke loose, and the raw skin of my stump scraped against the asphalt. I couldn't even drag myself up.

But Charlie just looked down at me with cold indifference before hitting the gas. "You've crossed the line today. Reflect on what you've done."

His casual words felt like a sledgehammer, crushing whatever was left of my heart.

My whole body ached, and I felt exhausted. My vision went dark, and I blacked out on the pavement.

When I finally came to, I was curled up on a street corner, surrounded by a murmuring crowd.

I tried to reach out to a passerby for help but was met only with a look of disgust and a cruel spit. "Ugh! A homewrecker playing the victim to seduce someone else's man. Disgusting!"

As I tried to defend myself, Mom suddenly called me. Her voice trembled with heartbreak and fury as she demanded, "Rachel, are you actually sleeping with a married man? Your dad was so upset he's been rushed to the ER!"

I looked down at Charlie. I had no idea what he was trying to do.Despite all the agony I had endured while alive, looking at him now, I did feel a shred of gratitude.Because he had saved Mom.Though Denise had shoved her so violently against that concrete corner, knocking her out cold, Charlie's people had finally arrived in the nick of time. A few minutes later, and Mom wouldn't have made it either. When she learned of my death, Mom had wept until her heart broke. She had screamed as she threw Charlie out of her sight. With bloodshot eyes, Charlie hadn't dared to linger. He just left behind a massive sum of money for her.Watching Mom grieve tore me apart."I'm so sorry, Mom. I couldn't bring you happiness while I was alive, and now I've left you with this unbearable burden in death. Mom, please forget about me. Take the money and live out the rest of your years in peace."Charlie stopped before a pristine, completely blank tombstone. He pulled out a pocketknife, pressed hi

Watching Charlie break down and sob didn't evoke a single ripple of emotion in me.There was a time when I put his feelings above everything else.Knowing how fiercely proud he had always been and how terrified I was that the bankruptcy would break his spirit, I had spent every single day trying to make him smile, doing everything I could to soothe his mind.Even during those years when he kept me in the dark and played poor, I had forced myself to stay cheerful. I swallowed every ounce of misery and exhaustion, terrified of adding to his burdens. But now, I was completely over it.Charlie simply wasn't worth it. He never had been.My only regret was the baby. He had come into this world without my knowledge, and without my knowledge, I had snuffed out what should have been a bright future.I had lost two children in this life. Maybe my horrific end was just karma. It was a punishment for my blindness, poor judgment, and wasting so many years on a man like Charlie. For some re

Denise had clearly hit a nerve. Charlie lunged forward and clamped his fingers hard around her throat."How dare you? You sent those thugs to beat Rachel, didn't you? You were the one who ripped out that oxygen tube and kept lying to my face, claiming she was smearing you! Denise, did you honestly think you could sweep all of this under the rug?"Her face turned red under his grip, but she stared back at him with pure derision. "So what? You still let yourself be led around like a fool all this time, didn't you?"Charlie, all I lost was a boy toy I used for a little fun. As long as I have money, I can find a hundred more just like him. But you? You threw away a woman who loved you and stood by you for nearly ten years!"She endured the darkest days of your life with you, and your reward to her was abandonment. She lost her leg for you, gave up everything that ever mattered to her, and from start to finish, you did nothing but push her deeper into the abyss!"I might be a monster,

When Charlie returned to Denise's hospital, he was informed that she had suffered a miscarriage. The moment he stepped into the ward, Denise lashed out in a fit of rage. "Charlie, where the hell were you? I just lost our baby, and you weren't even here to take care of me! Did you run after that bitch Rachel again?"This time, Charlie didn't bend over backward to humor her or soothe her tantrums like he used to.He let out a cold sneer. "Bitch? Are you talking about yourself?"Denise froze, utterly blindsided that Charlie would ever dare speak to her in such a tone.In a fit of humiliation and anger, she snapped, "What is that supposed to mean? Are you insulting me?"Charlie, Rachel killed our baby! If she hadn't stressed me out and sent my emotions into a tailspin, there's no way I would have miscarried! And here you are, taking her side!"Denise hysterically grabbed the glass from her nightstand and hurled it at Charlie, but he sidestepped it with ease."Are you sure you don't

The moment the name left their lips, a deafening roar exploded in Charlie's head.It felt as though a sledgehammer had struck him, instantly numbing all his senses. The strangers' voices sounded as if they were drifting in from a great distance."That poor lady was too foolish. She stayed by that man's side for nearly a decade, quietly supporting him without any official status. Anyone else would have smelled a rat."If he really loved her, how could he string her along for ten years without getting married? The guy was definitely hiding something!"The other person looked puzzled. "But the internet says the one who jumped was actually the mistress. The real wife is some wealthy heiress. She even posted their marriage certificate. How can you be so sure this Rachel wasn't the homewrecker?"Before the stranger could finish, Charlie snapped back to reality and fiercely cut them off. "She wasn't! She was never the homewrecker!"The two bystanders jumped, eyeing Charlie as if he had

Instinctively, he bolted toward the crowd. But a firm grip caught his wrist. Denise pulled him back. "Honey, my stomach hurts so bad…"Charlie hesitated but ultimately stepped on the gas, deciding to get Denise to the ER first. He desperately rationalized it to himself. There were plenty of disabled people in the world, and this woman was pregnant. "Honey, do you want a boy or a girl?"Charlie offered a half-hearted shrug. "Either is fine."In truth, he and Rachel
